I love watching your videos, Maangchi❤ .. you're super cute and lovely. I will cook the red bean rice next using your recipe. Sending thanks and well wishes from Singapore! ❤
I grew up in Trinidad and my mom got up early to fix our lunch kits. Even on school holidays when she had to work. By the time she woke us up at 5 or 6 am, lunch kit was packed, dinner was done and hot breakfast was being placed on the table. There are 3 of us kids (one is autistic), and she worked a corporate job. Lots of hard working moms out here.
tytytytyty how do you get spoiled and entitled from someone saying their mom was great . It’s normal for a mom to wake up and make her kids breakfast and lunch and look after them. She made them of course she will want to take care of them. Unless your mom was different.( don’t mean as an insult but I don’t know ,so sorry if it I offend you. ) Most kids even though their moms cook ,they help with chores .
Vietnamese, Malay, Thai, and Indonesian captions are up now thanks to our volunteer translators! Thank you everybody for submitting captions! I'm so impressed with you who volunteer to translate captions, to help others in your country enjoy my videos! When we come together and support each other, everyone wins!
Hey! I'm from El Salvador and we call red beans and rice "casamiento" -(marriage) how cool, a totally different country using the same base for a different recipe, truly cooking bring us all together :)
You will have so much fun with a local Korean grocery! It's wonderful shopping and trying out all sorts of different things. There is an Assi Supermarket not far from me, and I treasure it.
My mom would also get up super early to make us delicious breakfast. And we would get yummy dishes for our lunch box. This was every day. Korean moms are so amazing in how much they do for their families. I miss my mom so much 😭😭😭
I love all of the smaller side dishes, thank you for taking the time to teach us by making them all! I love how beautiful you look each time you teach us, and how you tell us about your heritage through your amazing recipes and chef skills! I love your positive uplifting personality!
Maangchi here in Dominican Republic we have a similar dish. we call it moro de habichuelas. it can be made with black or read beans and its delicious. i bet the korean version is good as well. greetings from Dominican Republic.
Hi Maangchi🙋♀️ Cooked this red bean rice today with fried corvina, bean sprouts and kimchi side dishes. Me and my husband liked it. Thank you from India.
Wow, this looks a lot like Puerto Rican-style rice and beans! The color is similar - except that we use annatto or tomato sauce instead of bean boiling water. It is also flavored with different spices since it's meant to be eaten as a big side to whatever protein you're serving. Big fan from PR!
Thats simple rajma chawal man...prepared in every Indian household😄 Also, you dont need to boil it for that long...just soak red beans overnight and pressure cook them next morning..you will save your time By the way, u explain too beautifully maangchi..lots of love😘😘
Your rice and beans is is this close to becoming a Jamaican dish...A few pieces of scallion, few springs of thyme, pimento, coconut milk, garlic and a little salt and you got Jamaican rice and peas....
Well yeah... every culture has their own recipe for rice so there is no need for cultural appropriation! Italians make rice, greeks too, then Persians , Portoricans , Indians and Serbians. All different!
In India, patbap is rajma chawal. Rajma is red beans and chawal is rice. It's my alltime favourite rice dish! Thank you Maangachi! Will definitely try them!
Hi Maangchi, I love watching Korean dramas and movies (every day in fact) and I see Patbap served in a lot of the shows. I love red beans.....mmmmm! So glad you show how to make it. Thank you. God Bless!
I enjoy watching you cook so much. I love how you wash your food, utensils everything. I feel like I am with a good friend in her kitchen and watching her cook - so relaxing!
Thanks for sharing this recipe, Maangchi! As you may know, here in Japan it’s called sekihan (赤飯) and I always loved it from the first time I tried it! However, whenever I asked my friends to please teach me how to make it, they usually replied “I don’t know how to” or “it’s too bothersome and difficult, just buy the instant stuff”... so I’m very happy for this comprehensive recipe and video =D
I was in a boarding high school. We used to have rice and beans everyday for 4yrs at lunch and I hated it.After school I swore never to eat rice and beans.5 years later i'm making it coz I love your recipes.
Hi Maangchi, Hello from Philadelphia. I just have to say, you are great! I’ve grown up eating a variation of this dish…Jamaican rice and peas, made with kidney beans, creamed coconut and Scotch Bonnet peppers. I found your channel 2 weeks ago and have been addicted ever since! I can’t get enough and cannot wait to make some of your receipes!!
Hello my fellow Koreans! Korean caption is up now! Suhyeon Hannah Lee (TH-cam channel) submitted the caption. She did a great job! Thank you so much, Suhyeon! 한국어자막 올려져있어요!
This video made my insides smile. Now I know how I'm going to do a Jamaican Korean fusion meal: Patbap, saltfish fritters, callaloo and mung beans, kimchi chocho and bok choy. Okay that was just an idea...
I found this channel recently, and I really love it! Maangchi really feels like a nice Korean aunt and reminds me of my real Korean aunt! She loves to cook and watch Korean dramas, and she really enjoys her job and shopping for clothes! She's such a sweet lady and Maangchi makes me feel so at home because of it. I want to show these videos to my aunt someday! (Her name is pronounced like Saam-Shuh, but I am not sure how to spell it because I've never seen it?)
I love your channel so much not just because of your recipes. You always introduce your experiences, cultural meanings, and other stories related to foods in Korea. They are very interesting and I really love it.
Maangchi, as long as I saw the picture before I even start to watch the video, I rushed out and bought the same ingredients and for sure they are going to be my family's dinner tonight. Thank you so much!!!!
It's pretty cool to see similarities in culinary cultures, even despite their geographical locations. That rice & beans end result is similar to many Caribbean dishes (had me thinking of Haiti, personally, lol)& other places. Great presentation & charmed to stumble across your page 🙃.

That alarm gave me a heart attack;; Reminded me too much of my morning alarm clock. This all looks so good though! I've never thought of adding cucumber to bean sprouts, that sounds really yummy.
Made this tonight. But cooked the beans for 60 minutes then put everything in the rice cooker. This came out perfect Maagchi! Served it with a shrimp, zucchini, and cabbage stir fry. The sauce had fish sauce, oyster sauce, gochugaru , gochujang , and soy sauce. Was perfect with doenjang jjigae.
I am from India and love eating food and to try and make different types of dishes. Thank for your wonderful dishes...I really love Korean food...and now it made more crazy about to know more about Korean food... I really love you Maangchi.
I know where I am in the south I can get Azuki red beans at my local grocery. The closest asian grocery is about 3 hours away so it's one of the only things I can get consistently. I remember my Grandma cooking with them when I was young, we have a lot of dried beans as main dishes around here.
Oh wow, when I turned 13 I had to make my lunchbox myself so most days I just didn't have lunch.. but then again on most days in Germany school ends around 1pm and I was home by 1.30pm so I could just eat at home. but on other days i got home around 5pm and had to wait til dinner.. but i understand since both my parents were working hard!! but my mouth is watering when you are talking about your lunch boxes!!
Hello!! I'm Colombian but i've been cooking Asían food for years . I've been looking for new recipes because i have an Asían pantry and my custom made chopsticks. Thank you for new recipes or better yet a new way to cook. Ps/ rice & beans is a staple in most of our countries
I discovered your channel yesterday and have watched at least 20 of your videos. Your fun personality and easy step by step methods definitely make cooking so much enjoyable. Thank you and greetings from France!
I love Korean dishes and the traditional table setting is amazing, so much variety and so healthy. But I can't keep wondering how it is impossible to do all this work every single day.
In Costa Rica we also have that kind of dishes and its also a tipical dish, its called "gallopinto". I just love your videos because i learned more about korea. ♡
Oh my, we have something similar in Martinique (in Guadeloupe too, though). But it’s something we eat for Christmas, or when having a big meal with the family. It has a lot of different spices like the mandatory bay leaf, and sometimes we put small pieces of a pig’s tail or a pig’s snout in it, and it’s sooo good! I will definitely try this version! Thank you Maangchi! It looks amazing!
In my country, Kenya, how we get them to be tender is we soak the beans in waster over night, usually over night because instead of cooking a small amount like you did we sometimes cook the whole bag you had. After soaking the beans and they are all pruny we then use the same we soaked with and boil the beans for like an hour or more depends on how much beans you have. Usually we use the beans to make this dish called Githeri after adding maize. you can use a pressure cooker to make the process faster, only if you have a lot of beans
I read all your nice and kind comments! Thanks a lot! English caption is up now. You can submit caption translations in your own language th-cam.com/users/timedtext_video?v=1FD6UtGEpoI&msg=5
Love it, i missed all korean food ...all that you cooked are all my favorite...its so yummy, the rice with red beans. My koean friends and my students used to cooked for me and most of tbe time , they invited me to different korean restaurant. Really love different side dish and kimchi
I was in S Korea a few years ago for just a few weeks and I think I had plain white rice two or three times. So much variety of grains and such cooked with the rice made it it so delicious. But the red bean rice ❤was my favorite. I got some adzuki beans and followed your recipe and it was so good! Thanks Maangchi ! Love your channel. 😊
Well while I can say that pressure on parents here is big too (especially in regard to school performance) I must say that lunchboxes literally play no role in it at all. Just wondered. :)
In fact, at least from 21 century, school system has changed and almost every schools in korea have meal system instead of hrs of preparing lunchboxes ;) So not many moms do that these days because school feed your kids! (Except for sooneung day, the korean univ entrance exam)
Lived in Costa Rica for a year and saw similar structure there. Its something that Western civilization is breaking down for capitalism. We not only have lost the numerous benefits to children from a single focused parent, but also made our society so that those women who truly wish to devote themselves to family cannot afford to do so unless their husband happens to be a very highly paid worker.
MsChinBKMXMB99 I'm a European. I never had a microwave. Don't generalize my friend ;) German breakfast is really simple. Bread and cold cuts, cheese, and vegetables with some coffee. I normally don't eat breakfast in the early morning, more like a brunch at work ~
Hi Maangchi, I'm Indian, am a big fan of you and your dishes.... Thanks for this awesome dish... So much to say...! I wish all happiness and blessings be yours.. Love you!!!!!! +maangchi
maangchi since last year i watched your videos i really want to know what kind of sesame oil that you used? because, in my opinion chinese sesame oil and korean sesame oil were different, the taste, the smell everything different when I put it, my chinese sesame oil kind of strong, everytime i eat korean food at restaurant they sesame oil also delicious. can u tell me what kind of sesame oil that u use? may be i can find it in korean grocery store in Indonesia. and the brand pleaseee.
That looks really easy. I live in Japan. I think I've eaten this dish with my students for school lunch. Now I can make it for my family! Thank you for your easy to follow videos.
Maangchi you don't only cook professionally, but you do it with love and passion! I loooooovvvvee your videos.. and of course your recipes too :) May god bless you with a long life so that you can do whatever makes you happy! I wish for you to be surrounded by people you love and who in return love you.
This made me hungry. I started to watch some of your videos just last week. And I made three of your recipe dishes already: wanja-jeon, jjinpang-mandu & kkwabaegi. My family love it! Thanks for sharing 😊

I'm actually eating southern red beans and rice as I'm typing this. I'm from Louisiana
mspatti similar bean flavor, different texture, but I'm only talking about the beans themselves as I never eaten either of those dishes,
Azuki beans are sort of nutty flavor. They are used a lot in sweet dishes. Like dango or mochi or dorayaki
I just had that too, haha.
Yum! Do you also add a little bit salt to the red bean rice?
I know where I am in the south I can get Azuki red beans at my local grocery. The closest asian grocery is about 3 hours away so it's one of the only things I can get consistently. I remember my Grandma cooking with them when I was young, we have a lot of dried beans as main dishes around here.

One or two hours for a lunch box every morning sounds to me as if there is a huge pressure on korean moms....
