Peridots growth literally makes me want to bawl its so precious. She goes from cold and calculating to wanting more from life and wanting to create rather than destroy. Even the episode where steven asks how she feels after apologizing to amethyst and she responds "Big." Brought tears to my eyes by how earnest her growth was becoming. And thats also what highlights the whole message of the show. Change.
I've heard conflicting opinions about Lapis as a character, especially the "Lapis takes the Barn and leaves" arc. While I can absolutely agree that Lapis takes certain things too far, and can also be mean a decent amount of the time, I also completely understand where she's coming from, and I don't think a good portion of her hurtfulness is on purpose (apart from her taking out her anger on Jasper, but Jasper wasn't innocent in that situation, either; it was mutually toxic, and Lapis both acknowledged it and denied the chance to return to it).
i saw a video that pointed out really clearly that this is all a part of Lapis’ healing. her healing from her trauma isn’t a linear path where she just learns to be better progressively. it has ups and downs. early on in the show she would just accept what’s coming as inevitable and not try to escape or fight. but here she has healed enough to be able to run away. however it’s an OVER-correction because it’s not the right thing to do at this moment. it’s really neat to see a character arc that isn’t linear and has someone over-correct at some point in their healing instead of just getting from point A to point B
I like to think of Lapis as a cautionary tale about not facing your trauma. The reason people think she's so unlikeable up to this point is because she had so many bad things happen in the past and instead of facing them & trying to move forward, she instead chooses to suppress or run from them which ultimately manifests in her being mean or doing objectively shitty things like taking the barn. Once she starts facing her past and opening up to her friends is when her personality really starts to become more caring & empathetic.
@@thecasual408this is an interesting way to read it, and makes a lot of sense, you can overdo something when you dont know how to do it correctly, and also with lapis being hurt so much, people saying 'just stop running away and face your fears' dont know what fear truly is

Even when something isn't objectively dangerous, if a fear response has been ingrained, it takes SO LONG to prove to yourself that nothing bad is going to happen (it's totally possible, but it's not instant or automatic). That's why trauma and anxiety are such big issues to deal with. If you could just "face up to it" instantly, they wouldn't be the problems they are. I think people (ironically) try to put SU characters into black and white boxes. I see this a lot with certain characters more than others, such as Rose and Lapis. But instead of judging characters as "overall good" or "overall bad", I think we need to remember that everyone makes a variety of decisions, some shittier than others. Problems/trauma/grief can cause people to make shitty decisions and be awful to others. But we can't just label people as "damaged by trauma and therefore an excusable villain", or when they aren't learning to be better fast enough, "given enough chances and now unredeemable". Part of learning to make better choices is to NOT label yourself as one thing or another ("Well I'm just horrible."), but to view your actions for the consequences they have ("What I did led to someone being hurt."). This is starting to become a ramble, but anyway. Lapis sees herself as "terrible". She says this in the boat episode. She labels herself just like fans might label her if they are trying to sum her up as "good/worthy" or not. Not only is she trapped in a cycle of fear responses based on her past experiences, but she can't see herself as capable of improving because she's written herself off as hopeless. She keeps isolating herself because she is afraid of experiencing more helplessness, and also because she believes she's just a negative on those around her. It's just not easy to improve in those situations.

Being in the mirror is NOT like being bubbled, bubbled gems are in stasis, time doesn't pass for them, gems stuck to objects are not however, Lapis was conscious ALL the millenia she was in the mirror and is why she could interact with Steven. Of course at the first sight of trouble she would want to run away, it was staying at a war she didn't want any part in that left her trapped in a mirror for over 5000 years while being conscious all that time, at least she also tried to take those who she cares about, Steven, Pumpkin and especially Peridot.

SU had a weird time scheduled in CN I remember missing a ton of episodes because they would show an episode at weird times of the day and never showed reruns. Missed a few episodes in season 4 and 5.
