Moved out of Udupi in 2015, been travelling to Bangalore since 2005.. nothing has changed in that specific stretch expect the Concrete stretch .. just sad state of affairs for Coastal Karnataka.
This is what happens when you build 4-6 lane roads in eco-sensitive zones. Please leave the area as it is. A high-quality 2-lane road is needed. The wider the road, the more trees you need to cut, the looser the soil becomes, and there is a higher chance of landslides. I suggest India learn from Japan, Korea and China on how to build roads in the mountains.

This highway is an example of the notorious nexus between civil contractors and politicians - both Congress & BJP. People are fed up with Gadkari's development projects that seem to be never ending in this stretch. After a decade of suffering people are cursing both secular Congress & hindutva BJP.

More than 77 years since India got its independence. Almost 68 years since Karnataka state was formed. Its really unfortunate that government is not able to build an all-weather road and rail system connecting Capital City and Port City of Karnataka, economically 1st and 2nd largest City of Karnataka. I am aware of the challenges western ghats bring and we need to preserve ecology of Western Ghats. But at this day and age with all the modern technological advanced method can't we build a proper rail/road system without hampering much of Ghat region. Shame on our policy makers.

Coastal part is completely neglected by all the Governments. Tier II cities like Mangalore to be given more focus rather than only stretching/stressing the capital town.
These landslides are happening because of unscientific method of highway building. Instead of step cutting of hills, many places to cut cost Highway engineers have sharp maintained slopes which are easy prey for land slides. These hills should have been cut in steps and also various varieties of palm trees should be planted. Palm trees spread their roots fast and wide and hence holds loose. Another thing is to build concrete mesh on these stepped hills which prevents loose soil even during heavy rain falls. In same way, engineers should plant wide sharing roots shrubs, grasses, trees at least 100 meters away from the edge of the roads. Saving tax payers money this way by overlooking safety is not at all saving. Also, loss life due to this in effective Highway construction can not be compensated. We must learn from China, Oman, etc where they have successfully built roads which encounters similar rains. At least now Engineers must pay serious focus on factor of safety both in protecting nature and people's life when using precious tax payers money.
Whatever you do..Mother Nature will improvise. It's not only about the road quality it's about where have we laid the roads, is the land really suitable for such humanly made work. If we build roads in a landslide area what else could we expect?
i would request to forward this to our road minister, he may take special intrest and speed up, nothing is impossible but techical study of geographical region is very important before stating any such projects. people of this belt are very good and hard working please dont test their patience.
