This movie came out just before I joined the Navy and became a mechanic for the engines in the F-14 Super Tomcat, which was cool. While not very accurate, this movie was very cool. The "fire" at the end of the engine is the after burner. It must be on when the jet launches from the aircraft carrier and when the pilot wants the jet to go fast. He basically is the lookout and scans the area for any threats. In the FA-18 (which took the place of the F-14), there is no RIO.

You recognize that song at the end of the movie (played on the Jukebox) because that was the song that Maverick and Goose serenaded Charlie with at the beginning of the movie (bar scene). It is why it triggered recognition in Pete.

The Navy, intense compared to the other branches of service? ROFL. I think you would have benefitted by having someone who served aboard an aircraft carrier, sitting beside you. The reason they were so sweaty in the beginning is because they were in the Indian Ocean. Some of the spaces aboard a carrier are air conditioned, but most of the ship is a sweatbox for the deployment. Naval rank is the hardest to recognize, especially in their whites. While officers do wear the traditional "stars and bars" like the other branches, their rank is totally different. They don't have General...they have Admirals.
Given that Marines are in the Department of the Navy, she isn't far off. The Navy is certainly more intense than the Air Firce or the Coast Guard. Navy SEALs are the most selective special operators. And Naval aviators are the best of the best. As far as the sweat, you are mostly correct, but CIC is air conditioned. All that electronic equipment needs to stay cool.
@havok6280 yeah, I know. I served in the Marines. But this movie was about Naval Aviators, not Marines. And the SEAL Teams are special operators, not normal sailors serving aboard ship. Marines also have their special operations, but they're not everyday Marines.
They earn their Call Sign on flight school by their classmates. It's almost never a compliment. Usually it commemorates a screw up or something embarrassing reworded as a funny name. The fire coming out of the jets is Afterburner. They dump extra fuel into the hot jet gasses to give it extra thrust, at the expense of burning tons more fuel. The guy in the back is called the RIO, Radar Intercept Officer. He handles the radar, electronics and is the lookout for the pilot while he concentrates on flying. The F-14 Tomcat had a very powerful radar and the cockpit came with hundreds of dials, displays and switches. You really needed 2 people to fly it.
The soundtrack is phenomenal and the fighter jet action scenes still looks excellent 30+ years later. The sequel is on a whole other level to the first movie
When I saw this as a kid I had to watch it like five times before I understood who Pete Mitchell was lol - there’s so much lingo and jargon and so many names I think she did a great job keeping most of it straight
This is a good movie but Top Gun Maverick is a great film!! They came back 30 years later and showed us how to smash it! 💥 Val Kilmer as Iceman doesn’t get enough credit for being a solid player and only looking out for everyone’s safety.
Michael Ironside played the deep-voiced flight instructor, and he's a charactre actor legend, particularly in sci-fi. His first big break was in "Scanners" (1980), and he also was in the great alien-invasion TV miniseries "V" (1983) and "Total Recall (1990).
At last a channel that puts enough commentary of the intro of Top Gun, which is very good, most of the reaction channels skip and skip the intro, bad there!!!!
"They went like out of bounds, basically?" Yes. Specifically, the hard deck simulates the ground. So when Maverick says that he was only under the hard deck for a few seconds, that's like saying, in your airplane, that you were under the ground for a few seconds. That hard deck is there for everyone's safety, so that you have LOTS of buffer room in a training environment.
@@popcornroulettereactionsI suspect that, in the Top Gun movie universe, at least, the instructors are given some leeway to cheat a bit. Also, "praise publicly, scold privately" is a common management principle. Dressing someone down with their subordinates in the room undermines authority, harms cohesion, and inspires bitterness well in excess of a normal ass-chewing. Viper may very well have given Jester a proper bollocking later, with the doors closed, but Maverick isn't entitled to be there, and letting him see how that bit of the sausage is made would only undermine his own upbraiding.
That "Breath" song won the Grammy for best soundtrack song, probably because the voters were beaten over the head with it. I recall it being on the radio wall-to-wall all summer long in '86, and in heavy rotation on MTV. Berlin was a great new wave band in the early '80s (e.g., "Metro"), but I read somewhere that this soundtrack project ultimately led to the band breaking up, as some members felt they were selling out.
I don't know if you noticed but the F-14 is a swept wing aircraft meaning the wings move forward and back depending on speed and maneuver. If it's going faster the wings move back to cut down on drag.
Fun fact- The first microprocessor was in the Tomcat and it was what controlled the wing swept according to airspeed to maximize performance automatically
Okay, here's some of the information you were hinting that you were interested in understanding. The f-14 tomcat, the aircraft that Tom Cruise/ Maverick flies is a two-seater fighter aircraft. The pilot sits in front and the Rio sits in back. In the United States Navy, The f-14 tomcat had a record of 5-0. There weren't many engagements for that aircraft, because there weren't very many wars during that time where air-to-air combat was a component. It was a pretty good aircraft and much better than the F4 phantom from the Vietnam era. But it did have engine problems. But when it worked it was fast and maneuverable. We sold f-14s to Iran and they had over 150 kills with the aircraft, according to their numbers. So it is a pretty prolific aircraft, but they did also lose f-14s in air-to-air combat. The F-16 is 76 to zero in air-to-air combat, it is a single seat fighter aircraft with a single F100 engine and it is extremely maneuverable. An F16 eluded six surface-to-air missiles when it ran out of counter measures in the Gulf War. By far the best record of any fighter aircraft in history is the F-15 eagle, it looks very similar to the f-14 in this film, but it is fixed Wing because it doesn't take off and land on aircraft carriers so it doesn't need the wings to spread out. The F-15 eagle is the most lethal fighter aircraft ever in combat. It's record in air-to-air. Combat is 104 to zero. During the Gulf War and F-15 engaged A Russian MiG-25 foxbat head on, they approached each other at well over Mach 3. The mig-25 turned and tried to evade The F-15 C, It turned out to be the worst decision and last decision of his life. The F-15 did a 12g turn and killed the foxbat in about 30 seconds. That means a 200 lb pilot weighed 2,400 lb during that turn. His head which would weigh approximately 20 lb and maybe another four with the helmet weighed well over 250 lb. During that turn. Keep in mind, f-15 pilots do not wear g suits, they can't because it would affect the joystick which is between their legs. An F16 and an f22 have the joystick on the side. If you want to see how fast the F-15 eagle is, look up F-15 and rocket, there's a guy that did a really good video about it. The other aircraft in that engagement, the mig-25 foxbat held all of the speed records for Ascent and pure speed. The F-15 streak eagle shattered them. An F-15 can take off and get to 60,000 ft in under 2 minutes, it can break the sound barrier going straight up. The f22 Raptor is just technologically superior and is the only American aircraft that actually can do the Cobra maneuver that you saw them do twice in the film. The f-14 cannot do a cobra maneuver. But it was nice in the film. Two Russian fighters can do the Cobra maneuver, the su-27 and the su-30, but they are inferior aircraft to the F-15 eagle and cannot shoot down an F-22 Raptor. They would have to have luck on their side to get an F-15. The f22 Raptor can easily do the Cobra maneuver, in fact they can hover in a cloud with their tail down and just sit there without being seen. The f22 is a pure stealth aircraft that has the radar signature of a bumblebee or marble. A pair of F4 phantoms, flown by Iranian pilots tried to shoot down a second drone last year. They had shot down one of our drones or knocked it off course and caused it to crash. They were getting ready to do it to a second drone. Meanwhile, underneath them were sitting two f-22 raptors. They didn't know they were there. They had been flying underneath them for about 5 minutes when it looked like they were getting in position to try and shoot down the drone. So one of the f-22 raptors slowly rose up from beneath them and opened up his mic. He told them I don't think you want to shoot that drone down. You should probably go home now. Something to the effect anyway. They went home immediately. It had to have startled them to have two United States top of the line aircraft following them without them seeing them. Russia has a stealth aircraft called the su- 57, but it is garbage just like everything else Russia has. The Thunderbirds, the United States Air Force demonstration team are extraordinary and they fly f-16s. The Blue Angels flight f-18 super hornets. Those groups of pilots are the best in the world. Nobody is better than those guys. I know there's a documentary that shows the Blue Angels, I don't remember what platform it's on. It's probably on Amazon, but I don't remember which one for sure. That would give you a lot more information on the pilots. Also, call signs are not self-created. Call signs are usually derogatory, not complementary. They're given to rookie pilots by their more experienced peers. My favorite call sign ever is in the second top gun movie, but I'm not going to spoil it for you. You'll know it when you see it/ hear it. I wanted to be a fighter pilot when I was 15, I wanted to fly F-15 eagles and I had a friend named John in junior ROTC with me that was going to be my wingman. But my eyesight went bad between my freshman and sophomore years so flying a fighter aircraft was never going to be in my future. You have to have better than perfect vision to be a fighter pilot. Hope this helps with some of your questions that I heard during the reaction. Oh and one last cool thing about the F-15 eagle. There was an Israeli F-15 that accidentally clipped another aircraft. While they were flying and lost part of its right wing. They went into a flat spin like the example in top gun that killed goose. But the F-15 has so much power with its two F100 engines that the pilot punched it and was able to pull out of the flat spin. He decided to try and land as he was only 14 mi away from the runway. After he landed the plane at a higher speed because of the missing lift from The right wing. He opened his cockpit and looked out the window, he wasn't missing part of the right wing. He was missing the entire right wing. He managed to land his jet with only one Wing. There aren't many aircraft that can do that. I think I've only seen one other aircraft that was a propeller driven aircraft make a landing and that pilot had to been one of the greatest pilots ever. The funniest aircraft story I've ever heard is the SR-71 Blackbird, I can't remember the pilot's name, but it's the funniest and coolest story you will ever hear and it is available on TH-cam. It's called the speed check. If you search speed check sr71 you will get the story. I'm not going to spoil anything about that either. The sr-71 is a spy plane that goes faster than Mach. 3. The F-15 goes close to Mach 3 but not quite there. About Mach 2.7 for the older versions and the current one the f15ex can go about Mach 2.9. Anyway, sorry for the long explanation, but I wanted to answer all of your questions about the fighter aircraft that the United States has used over the past 40 years. The F-15 is 50 years old and is still an effective aircraft that can defeat almost any other aircraft other than the f-22 and the f-35. I enjoyed your reaction and hope this provided some of the answers you were looking for.
F-15 pilots don't wear g-suits? All fighter pilots do to keep the blood from pooling in their legs...including the F-15. Even the F-14 pilots, with similar flightstick controls were pressure suits.
I actually had to abort after approx 20 minutes. Yes we're here to see her reaction and hear her thoughts about the movie, but holy shit this chick NEVER shuts up, she talks over ALL the dialogue and misses ALL the great lines.
@ozcolumbo to each their own I guess. Personally, I like watching reaction videos for exactly that, the talking, comments throughout, emotional reactions, etc. I've seen the movie a few times and watched a dozen reactions, so I'm not watching these videos for the movie anymore. Top Gun is nearly 2 hours of a series of music videos combined together that's called a movie. But that's okay it's music from the 1980's not the flash in the pan crap from now.
There are no Generals in the Navy, flag officers are called Admirals. "Short guy" was not an admiral, he was a Commander - in charge of the Air Group on the carrier.
My friend's grandfather, retired USAF, coordinated the aeronautical stuff, dogfights, etc. for this film, so we had the chance to see the raw footage before the film was released -- no music, no dialogue, just jets zipping around the stratosphere, which was pretty amazing. We passed on seeing the film in the theaters because we didn't really go in for that kind of jingoistic, neo-fasch pablum, but it was still pretty cool to have a personal connection to the making of a huge Hollywood blockbuster.
Cool video 👍🏼 I have a suggestion to do a first time watch review for a movie called "Class of 1984" it's from 1982 a film way ahead of it's time and predicted the future of how high school kids acted
Man this sofa chair is gettin some miles. Everyone watching now on this one gray sofa chair. Or everyone has the same chair. Somewhat interesting to me.
Its too bad we never got a ARCHER Top Gun season or at least an episode, after they did the whole Highway to the Danger Zone music video as a season 5 teaser trailer which ended up being Archer Vice instead.
There's Oxygen in the cabin but if there's a leak (due to, say, battle damage) it'll decompress real quick and then the crew won't have time to put masks on before passing out. The real other reason to keep the mask on from the get go is to put the radio mike within the proper distance, without in-cabin noise jamming-up their calls.
Nicki, please don't take this the wrong way, but, you're supposed to be reacting to the scenes, not a constant commentary. It kind of kills the moments.
At first I was like, this is not the Coby I ordered. Who is this blue-haired misandrist reacting to one of my favorite movies? But then it turned out really well, great reaction. Thank you for posting.

Respectfully, their call signs are right on their helmets.
So excited to see that one!!!
If you would like to see more young Tom Cruise, I recommend Risky Business, which came out in 1983. It was his first major lead role.
"They went like out of bounds, basically?"
Yes.
Technically then… Jester crashed his plane and killed himself so Maverick should have gotten the credit for the win haha
You lost that lovin feeling. Righteous brothers
The band that sang that song is Berlin. They were an underrated 80s band with lots of other good songs.
Fun fact- The first microprocessor was in the Tomcat and it was what controlled the wing swept according to airspeed to maximize performance automatically
if you want to see younger Tom Cruise again I recommend…
“A Few Good Men”
“Born on the Fourth of July”
“The Firm”
This is where the term WING MAN comes from...combat aviation
Think you would enjoy *(Rocky)* just as much, through culture you probably think it's a Boxing moving but it's actually a Love Story
@@jeffburnham6611 F-15 pilots do not wear g suits.
Great reaction to a great movie ..
Hopefully, you react to more TOM CRUISE movies
Nicki is my fave reactor on this channel 🙂 More vids with Nicki please!! Especially Top Gun 2!
I'm entertained by how others view it, and I'm entertained by Nick's genuine reactions! Nicki, you do you!
@@Paul-br that is so sweet! Thanks so much! I definitely know I am a talker haha but I always feel like it’s silly when people complain about the talking in a reaction video. Isn’t that the point? lol buts it’s all good I don’t take it personally :) thanks for your support!
@lennea23 that's absolutely the point! :) You're welcome and I look forward to more content 😊
Goose was a RIO. Stands for Radar Intercept Officer. Ran the radars and coms.

This must be the first time in history that a reactor hasn’t immediately jumped in and stated unequivocally that the character must be suffering from PTSD or the like when it’s so obvious (of course that would mean the reactor is actually paying attention to the movie) that Cougar has just had a terrible shock to the system at nearly dying, orphaning his kid and windowing his wife.
So because I didn’t mention that cougar was experiencing PTSD or “something similar” then that means I wasn’t paying attention? 1+1 does not equal 5.
Lt. Pete Mitchell's call sign is Maverick.
Top Gun is nearly 2 hours of a series of music videos combined together that's called a movie. But that's okay it's music from the 1980's not the flash in the pan crap from now.
Every generation thinks they have the best music, the 80s aren't special
@@zackiej89 keep telling yourself that.
There are no Generals in the Navy, flag officers are called Admirals. "Short guy" was not an admiral, he was a Commander - in charge of the Air Group on the carrier.
Dont disrespect Cmdr Strickland !
He's about done with folks like that kid McFly bugging him in his civilian job.
Thank you! I felt terribly for not knowing the titles and stuff haha
Awesome coolest funniest amazing and lovely reaction every time 🎉❤😇💯👍
Thanks so much!
You HAVE to watch Top Gun Mavrick and review it.................
Don’t worry, I will!
Wow Nicki has beautiful eyes.
Awe thanks!
Now hurry up and watch top gun Maverick before you forget everything
The man with the classic voice is Michael Ironside.
so good, thanks
THE FLYING SCOTSMAN is a great movie about a true story
They didn't have their mask on so you could see who's Who, for the movie (you wouldn't do that )
Nicki, Tom Skerrit, a.k.a. "Viper" was in "Alien".
I didn`t know Meg Ryan was in this ... very young ... Goose's wife! Good surprise!
*Maverick/Tom Cruise* Love interest *Charlie/Kelly McGillis* is a Lesbian in Real life
The guy in the backseat is the Radar Intercept Officer, or RIO.
Coby need to react to Near Dark! For October
Such a tough movie to find on streaming sadly
@@popcornroulettereactions DVD/BluRay? 'll even purchase it and mail it to you good folks
Nicki, the Macross Saga was released first in 1981.
Popcorn Roulette you say? Guess we got the chamber with the round in it this time... 🤣
React to “Rain Man” with Tom Cruise Niki - not the other players 😅
His character name is Pete Mitchell and his pilot call sign name is Maverick
Mustang is the carrier
We didn't need helmets in the 80s to ride a motorcycle, wasn't the law.
Oh God you called it classic.. Which it is but I feel so old lol I was born in 1982.....
Could be worse. At least you weren't in Middle or High School when this came out. Now that is "old."
MiG 28 is a Russian fighter jet. Back then.
There’s very little oxygen when you fly that high, that’s why they’re wearing oxygen masks 😊
When me and my girlfriend saw it back then a gay man sitting a few rows in front of us squealed all through the volleyball scene.
😂
If you liked young Tom cruise and haven’t seen The Outsiders, it’s pretty amazing
Ps: you’re way overthinking who is who in the beginning.
Nikki is the best at reacting, I would like you to see the mission impossible saga😍
Thanks so much! I’m glad you enjoy my reactions :)
That are all called by their call sign. They don’t use real names.
Another reactor who won't be quiet long enough to really even pay attention to the movie... Lol...
Hi Nicki hope you two are having an great and awesome day ❤
You look like Miley Cyrus
You look Very Similar to Miley Cyrus
Miley
Cyrus Look Alike
I like your long hair best .
.....the names are literally written on the helmets.
Nicki, please don't take this the wrong way, but, you're supposed to be reacting to the scenes, not a constant commentary.
It kind of kills the moments.
Why do you remind me of Miley Cyrus??
Long lost sister. My favorite compliment!
At first I was like, this is not the Coby I ordered. Who is this blue-haired misandrist reacting to one of my favorite movies? But then it turned out really well, great reaction. Thank you for posting.

@lennea23 Commenting every 5 secs when u don't even know what's going on is not a reaction, it's a butcher job. Get a dictionary and find the definition of reaction
oh my god shut up and enjoy the MOVIE!
I am enjoying the movie :)
I tried to watch this reaction but could only last 1 min and 12 seconds. Too annoying the lips can stop and don’t have to keep moving through the whole reaction.
