In the first movie, Penny Benjamin was the admirals daughter that Maverick was dating when he got busted. Remember, 6 high speed passes over control towers and 1 admiral’s daughter. Then Goose says, “Penny Benjamin”.

Goose's wife, played by Meg Ryan, also mentions Penny to Maverick when they're at the bar and Goose is playing on the piano. She says "he told me about the time you went ballistic with Penny Benjamin." Both were amazing call backs to the original film.

4:14 this is a prototype. Called sr-72 darkstar. In this scene they used f-18 super hornet and use cgi to change the look of this jet to look like the prototype.
Also, the previous model of this aircraft called sr-71 blackbird, exists in real life.

    • @StevesFunhouse
      @StevesFunhouse 15 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

"sr-71 blackbird, exists in real life" ... AND is still the fastest plane to ever grace the skies ... AND its REAL top speed is STILL top secret (unknown) !!!

    • @vladyvhv9579
      @vladyvhv9579 15 วันที่ผ่านมา

Actually, the Darkstar was designed and built by Lockheed. Though CGI was used for the flying sequences. But, Lockheed did build a physical model as if they were actually going to make it do mach 10. As such, it's design is similar ot the actual SR-72 prototype (which people are now calling Darkstar), to the point where China diverted a spy satellite to get images of it. The actual SR-72 is a drone, so will not qualify for the SR-71's records.

I dont like that they changed the gun sounds. The real gun sounds of these jets sound much cooler. And a lot of other things in real life sounds better that they changed in this movie. I have no clue why. I understand that they changed for example the hud symbols and make it simpler, easyer to understand. But i dont know why it was necceserly to do it with the sounds.

As I saw someone else say: "This movie has no business being this good"! It's so true, every scene is either perfect or as close to perfect as is possible. There are so many film trope traps it could have fallen into just to get an extra laugh or create additional drama, bot somehow this film knows that it does not need it, it's has enough on its own. There are particularly two things I keep thinking of:
    1. When he jumps out the window after the night at Penny's, and Amelia sees him, it a less self aware movie would have gone for an easy joke. Instead she says "just don't break her heart again" and it hit's so much harder in the feels than any joke could have ever done.
    2. Before he leaves for the mission he goes to talk to Penny. Any other movie would hav had him not telling her anything to not worry her, and then it would create extra drama because she would be angry that he "just left again". Instead he actually tells her what is happening and why he leaves and what he means (although we don't see/hear the exact words, the whole emotion of that scene makes it clear to me that it is what he does) which makes it so much more mature, and to be honest, real.
Also, I'm not sure if you actually mentioned it, I might have missed it, but the illness and reason for Iceman not speaking, is that Val Kilmer had throat cancer in real life and lost most if not all of his voice. So the portrayed illness of Iceman is the exact same as of the real life Val Kilmer.

The greatest thing about this movie for me is, I saw it on a plane. After going to Buffalo from Orlando to eat some wings, visit family and watch a football game with said family, on the flight home from New York the TV reception wasn't working so I figured, why not? And I loved it. Mover (a former Air Force and Navy pilot on TH-cam) did an 8 part series on this movie and after talking about everything that was pure Hollywood (though pointing out that they never showed Rooster or Mav arming the ejection seats which could be intentional!) started after the 5th part pinning a comment that "Guys. We loved it. Chill out."

The F18 has a single seat and 2 seat version. They set up cameras in the two seat versions and navy pilots flew while the actors in the back seat acted as if they were actually flying. The plane that Tom Cruise flys at the end is P51 Mustang, a WW2 fighter. He is an accomplished pilot but to fly an F18 takes a lot of training and he would never had been allowed to learn to fly those.

@@Reactsandgames They actually used then-brand-new Sony Venice 8K IMAX digital cameras - as many as 6 in the cockpit at once, which is only possible because these cameras, originally made for James Cameron for Avatar II, allowed the camera sensor to be detached and the main camera body to be placed elsewhere. As such, the vast majority of the flying sequences are absolutely real footage from the actors really flying in the rear seat of an F18 (piloted by Naval aviators). I doubt you'll see footage that looks that good anytime soon.

The first movie was a Navy recruiter film, lots of Hollywood but this film had lots of actual Navy consultants, keeping it real. Tom also wanted it as real as possible, so little CGI was used. I remember when my squadron was deployed and they (Hollywood) sent the Top Gun movie out to the fleet to watch. I had been flying the F14B for a few years and while sitting there with the rest and Maverick has a Mig on his six, he says "I'll hit the brakes and he'll fly right by", had us all laughing and a A6 pilot leans up and asked if my Tomcat can really do that. I laughed as I told him no, at that speed, deploying the speed brake would rip it clean off. This had a lot of Navy, real Navy involved in making sure it was as close to real as possible. The next one is supposed to also have the Navy's support, we'll have to hope that Tom can stay young enough to be in the plane.

For most of these shots, Tom Cruise is indeed in the aircraft--but in the back seat of the F/A-18E Super Hornet. The Navy stipulated that they could use operational aircraft for the movie as long as they were being flown by Navy pilots--but would never allow Cruise himself to fly them.

Such an amazing reaction and such a great movie!
The amusing thing for me that almost no one seems to get is that Hangman is Maverick as he would have been if he had been flying one of the typical single-seat modern fighters instead of the two-seat F-14s used in the original Top Gun. The main thing that kept Maverick from being what Hangman was is that Mav always had Goose, who was his conscience in some ways, riding brakes on Mav's worst impulses and making them not so bad. Mav was responsible to and for Goose, and since Goose was his only family Mav usually held himself in check so he wouldn't let Goose down. Hangman didn't have a back seater to be responsible to and for, so he could go all out to prove he was the best he could be and better than everyone else, which justly earned him his callsign: because he'd always hang you out to dry to prove you weren't as good as he was. Luckily, and thankfully, Hangman learned the important lesson about teamwork through Mav, who uniquely understood Hangman's driven personality. Hangman's character development was a very well done part of the movie too.
In an early script, Hangman was to be Ice's son. I'm glad they scrapped that.
In the F-18 scenes, professional military pilots were doing the actual flying, but the back seat cockpits were set up to look like the real thing. The tech advances for getting us inside the cockpit with the actor were amazing! And the actors had additional duties to their usual acting as they had to test and make sure the cameras were set and focused properly, that their makeup was good, and that the shots were as near perfect as possible. The director had the toughest time since all he could do was stand around and wait until the day's flying was done, then collect all the day's filming out of the onboard camera systems and take it to watch for the first time then and make notes for the next day's flying.
The actors actually had to go through an intensive training program to prepare them for flying in the fighters. I imagine there was some vomit hosed out of the cockpit after some of those maneuvers. Even though the actors, from what I remember, were never taken above 4G, that's nothing to sneeze at. Especially over time. I know the Fury 325 roller coaster at Carowinds near where I grew up in Charlotte, NC is said to max out at around 4Gs, that's just for a short period of time.
The WWII plane Cruise was working on at the beginning and flying at the end of the movie is his own personal plane that he is licensed to fly. He took members of the cast and crew up in it for fun in between work. That had to be a blast.
Val Kilmer had been fighting throat cancer in real life, but it was important to have him in this movie and he wanted to be there. His voice in the scenes was a programmed synthesized voice, but it was perfectly his voice as it might be. It was so good to see them as such close friends, and to know that Ice had constantly been Mav's guardian angel, keeping him in the service no matter what Mav did to get himself dismissed. And it showed a lot of how well Ice really understood Mav, and explains a lot of Mav's behaviors in the early movie.
Mav is basically suicidally depressed when the movie starts, but he's not the suicidal type, so he looks for situations where he can go out doing what he does best, but he fights to survive anyway because that is his nature. Ignoring how he feels (typical man, I know) he focuses on something else that he can control: flying. All Mav has is the service. He has no family. Even Goose's family he's not close to, though we only learn why as the movie advances. The Navy and the people he works with, best shown in Hondo, are the only family he has. So he pushes beyond Mach 10 because the project is going to be shut down and he'll lose the team/family he's been working with and, knowing as he does that Ice has been fighting cancer, he is aware that his long-term guardian angel might not be able to keep him where he needs to be. His time is running out, and he's well aware of that, so if he stays in pure Maverick mode and pushes juuust a bit more, and a bit more again, then maybe he can go out doing what he loves before that is taken away from him too. So he does. But he survives. And his guardian angel Ice is still able to shift him back to someplace he needs to be. And, whether this was Ice's grand plan knowing who all from Pete's history was there or not, Mav ends up where he needs to be to reestablish a will to live beyond the military. Reestablishment of his old family with Rooster. Rediscovery and, much more importantly, a new appreciation of an old flame (mentioned but never seen in the original movie). And suddenly Mav has every reason to not die in the cockpit. So, of course, he must go and do something that could very easily make him die in the cockpit.
And the first time I saw this movie I didn't relax when I saw that Rooster had ejected successfully because I remembered that his dad ejected successfully too, and I wasn't going to stop being tense until I saw proof of survival. 😀
The script, the direction, the acting from all the actors, the cinematography, and the reliance on a majority of practical FX instead of just green screening everything were all astoundingly amazing and made this a superlative movie experience.
The reaction was so good too. I've seen reactions to this movie dozens of times so I should be inured to all the tense and emotional moments, but nope, I was right there with you with tears in my eyes too.
This is the first vid I've seen from you all, but I enjoyed it so much that I've subbed and I'm looking forward to more. Keep up the great work!

My wife and I saw this movie on opening night shortly after we moved to our new hometown of Colorado Springs. Unbeknown to us, as it happened, the theater is across the street from the US Air Force Academy. Also, as it happened, it was graduation day. As we were driving to the theater, the USAF Thunderbirds were doing a flyby for the graduation ceremony. The theater itself was full of cadets, some of whom just graduated, in their ceremonial uniform. During the movie, we could overhear their hushed conversations evaluating the technical details. Couldn't think of a more dramatic way to experience this movie!

I trained on Martin baker seats back in 1974 to fly in an OV-1 Mohawk ( 2 seat,Twin engine Recon with photo and Radar) . Preflight had to remove many safety pins to arm the seat. When they got in the F-14, they didn't remove the safeties.

3:22 Mach is a speed measuring system.

Mach 10 is what the SR-72 Darkstar (the plane in the intro) can reach, which is 12350 kmh (7672 mph). While Mach 1 is supersonic speeds, Mach 10 is considered Hypersonic.
Your typical airliner cruises at Mach 0.86 which is 1062 kmh (660 mph), can cross the atlantic in about 9-12 hours depending on what for type jet it is.
Concorde (supersonic airliner and my fav passenger jet) flies at Mach 2 which is 2470 kmh or 1535 mph and can cross the atlantic in less than 3 hours.

Miramar and North Island are both in the San Diego area, that’s why North Island was chosen for this film. By the way, the base at Miramar is still there, it’s just run by the U.S. Marines and is now known as Marine Corp Air Station Miramar and F-18’s are still buzzing around the area.

While everyone in many crafts is switches to robots and CGIs, saying Man is remplaceable..., we HUMANS ALWAYS PREFER the performance of a fellow human challenging the non-human as a revenge, and we celebrate the AUTHENTICITY.
Like Maverick says, "It's not the plane, it's the pilot!". And TC is now the last ones pushing the limits and still performing 200% in his craft. The future is CGI, but people will ALWAYS prefer and respect the "real thing". Hurrah to Maverick & TC! 🎉
