This is the best artist I’ve seen teaching the process. Excellent communication on exactly how she’s using the brush and picking up the colors. Also how she blends it. So grateful I came across you. My first time seeing you. I’m subscribing for more educational videos. Thank you

This is so helpful! You really are talented, not just as an artist, but as a teacher. Those little details, like holding the brush or pressure of brush, are said in an easy to understood manner and why it’s done. I really enjoy all your videos!

I am amazed! This video isn't new but the concepts of how to apply paint is timeless ! We fret too much about the image but overlook the basic foundation and that is the background. Thank You Jane you are a fantastic resource and teacher!!

I truly enjoyed this session. Jane, I find your instruction method far better than any that I've seen on the Internet. I like the way you lay down the objectives of what you are going to teach us. I also like how you set the road map and manage our expectation right off the bat. I hope that you had a Merry Christmas and wish you the best for the 2018 New Year.

You teach beautifully. Thank you for demonstrating two ways to paint a smoky background to set the tone of a painting. I watched because I needed to know how to carry off a dusty ground where and animal is trotting. I want to show the dust plumes going upwards. Yours is the only video I could find close to what I’m seeking, thank you.

I never thought myself artistic, I never wanted to try and paint because I can't really draw or any of that business. I decided I wanted to try canvas painting and went to TH-cam to see how it all works. Sounds cheesy but your videos gave me the push to do it. I LOVE your teaching and your art is wonderful. Finally did my own paintings and I have no plan on stopping! Thank you!

I find it helpful that you show your brush and how much paint you put on it as well as describing the brush strokes, ie pressure & direction. Also appreciate your explanation as to why a canvas with gesso on it is preferential with the dry brush method. Love your tutorials, Thank you so very much!

Hey Jane, I just want to leave a note of thanks. I've been playing with paint for nearly 30 years (ceramics, folk art, craft projects) but only painting on canvas with any level of seriousness, for about 3 years. It's these kind of instructions, the ones that give me instructions on elements that I can use in the way that I want, that have been most helpful. I have no desire to do knock of paintings of other people's designs, and while they're good for practice, it doesn't make me feel like an artist. Even at that though, you do better than most TH-cam art "teachers" out there, because you always encourage people to do their own thing. What you've done is given me the skills to become someone who feels like an artist - one that still does knock offs (I paint mostly dog portraits from photographs, my own photos, commissioned pieces with permission to use their photos, or free stock) but with the skills to pull that off. I also love your style, so when I do complete a painting you've created, at least I'm left with something I want to hang on my own wall. I believe that's your goal, to unlock the artist in others, rather than just getting people to reproduce your paintings step by step and keep them watching. These days all I do is look up things like, "how to paint fog" and without fail, your videos come up, I don't have to watch an entire hour's worth of video of someone who has used fog, only to discover it's not going to work with the idea in my head. If I'm ever not broke, I'll be happy to share my gratitude via Patreon, but for now I hope that a sincere thank you is enough. If I'm right and your goal is to unlock the artist in others, I can confirm that you're succeeding.

Really like this lesson, thanks! I've milked these two techniques for a few paintings that all have a general formula of silhouette plus smoky background - you can do so much with it it's great! The three colours on the brush at the same time idea works really well for a smoky effect - also with stippling (gives a spray paint like effect). Thanks again for the great videos!

Hi there just wanted to let u know that your videos are amazing. Super stoked I came across this one and then all the others that follow. The possibilities are endless and your techniques and tips are most helpful to a noob like me. Thanks a bunch

Stumbled across this looking for hand-painted backdrops (for photography). It's not what I was looking for, but your technique, if used on a larger scale, would probably still make a great backdrop.

Thank you for a wonderful tutorial. I am a newbie and feel like I can paint the Cattails, the Midnight Raven, and the Awaken At Dusk. I believe this tutorial will be very helpful in backgrounds. The second was new to me and I plan to use it with the d. Purple for a Halloween painting I want to do. Please continue to put great painting tutorials up with fun stuff that looks amazing and is basic enough for beginning painters.

Thank you so much Ann for all these awesome tutorials.. I am learning so much from you and turning each technique into my own designs. Your turning me into an actual painter instead of a pattern painter. Please keep them coming.
