    I picked up that razor blade trick from a mate a few years back. I usually scrape the corners off a fresh blade on the concrete floor to stop them digging in.

    If you haven’t tried it already, try to find a tube of SoCur “Chip Fix”. It’s a UV clear putty that dries in seconds with a small handheld UV light. The guy that makes it works for BASF, it works great. Zero shrinkage.

    • @soundsystemlevel6942
      @soundsystemlevel6942 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Mike I was looking for a better system for chips, I use the same system as the gun man with only small differences I clean the panel before filler, to see the chips better and any shiny bits, and after the razor I use the DA wet sand the filler, dry the panel and a quick 1000 dry, minor differences/personal preference other than that the same system, but I'm looking for a faster system so I might look into the soCur UV system

    When I drag a razor blade like that, I put a bend in it to "lift" the corners off the panel. You can "tune" it by leaning it forward to the panel to get a wider bite. Love the videos. :D

    • @TheGunmanChannel
      @TheGunmanChannel  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I actually do that one myself sometimes. Much better than the old block, then cut through, then high spots, then shrink back. I've seen people make an absolute mess out of a few stone chips.

      You can round off the corners and even the back edge of your razor blade with 600 -1200 paper with a few stroke on a flat bench or a window. Razor blades are great for filling small chips. Panel wipe speeds up the curing time of knifing putty so you can send almost right away. Nice idea the base coat colouring if you can't match with hardener.

    I can only imagine what a customer would say if they seen you doing taking a razor blade to there new g wagon, hellcat etc. do you have videos on paint selection from local shops, clear coat differences, types of sand paper better for metal and car use. Does the low lower grits 80-400 that feels like normal paper
    Matter as much as the finer grits that use that plastic type backing like 4m
    Does 600-3,000

    I'm trying to understand why it wasn't necessary to thoroughly wipe off all of the dust after you used the orbital sander before you applied the filler to the stone chips.Wont the residue dust affect the filler's adhesion?

    • @TheGunmanChannel
      @TheGunmanChannel  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Nope, I've done it this way for years, even wiping the panel down probably wouldn't remove all the dust from the chips, I know this method works because this is my own car and I sprayed this about a year ago, I looked at it today and it still looks great, no shrinking or delamination

    • @soundsystemlevel6942
      @soundsystemlevel6942 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I clean the panel quickly with water and a microfibre quickly/ruffly first before filler, not for adhesion, but to see all the chips easier and any shiny paint bits to scotchy or get when sanding the filler, if for any reason the panel hasn't been cleaned like a work mate mixed up a batch of filler and it's about to go off, on it goes... it never has caused me any adhesion issues or job comebacks later on down the line, ...great video by the way💯♾️

  • @MarkSmith-dz6dj
    @MarkSmith-dz6dj 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Gunny what do you think about using a bit of fully catalysed hi fill with a brush, so foam 600 scuff the chip, brush fill small chip with hi fill then next day 600 random orbital ready for base or prime? Talking the home job here so time isn't a significant issue.

    • @TheGunmanChannel
      @TheGunmanChannel  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      By rights it should work, only thing is that when built up it usually takes a bit longer than filler to fully cure, so it may shrink more over time, it could look ok until a month down the track when it is fully cured then it has sunk further into the chip, if that makes sense.

    • @MarkSmith-dz6dj
      @MarkSmith-dz6dj 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah mate absolutely makes sense. I have like 100 + small super fine chips in my MPS bonnet through to primer lol so was thinking about a week in advance of sanding back giving it a go. There are a couple of larger chips that I'll skim coat. Plans may change, I may just go right back to metal. I have watched all of your vids and love em gunny, keep up the good work mate. As I said elsewhere. you inspired me to un retire my gear and have a crack at a complete re-spray... Velocity red eeeeeeek.

    • @TheGunmanChannel
      @TheGunmanChannel  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MarkSmith-dz6dj Yeah velocity red is a nice colour, coverage is the main issue you'll have. And to be honest if there's that many stone chips it could be worth filling the ones you can see like I did in this video, then actually spraying 2-3 even coats of primer on, that gives you a 2nd chance to get the ones you may have missed, obviously it's not necessary as you saw in this video series but I do this shit every day, so I'm confident I can do it but for someone learning I'd probably recommend what I just mentioned.

    • @MarkSmith-dz6dj
      @MarkSmith-dz6dj 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks mate. I was just outside looking over the bonnet and think I'll take your advice and fill all I can see sand, then fully 2K prime. My velocity red is 10 years old now and it's like all the magenta in the main layer has faded out so it's gone an almost goldish tint on the pearl on all the upper surfaces. I went PPG on the ground and main and did a few test cards, 1.5, 2.5 and 3.5 coats and they are all way darker than whats on the car so full re-spray it is. Cheers mate. A lot may say why bother.... there is nothing quite like the satisfaction of off the gun fresh paint.

    600 grit over the panel would mean that the "low spot" that is the chip, didn't get sanded, neither did the edges of the chip, so would that mean It wouldn't adhere that well?

    • @TheGunmanChannel
      @TheGunmanChannel  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I filled the chips in with fine filler, then scraped the excess off with a razor, then used 600 which is more than enough for adhesion.

    • @dalyntaylor2413
      @dalyntaylor2413 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Maybe try slowing down your activator. I had the same issue when i was sealing bigger jobs and it would flash off as I was spraying so the overspray was landing on top and creating that sandpiling I think you're talking about. Also if you can feel or see that its gritty before you put color on just give it a quick scuff back and tack and you should be good👍 Hope that helps.

      What disc do you final prep with? Should be p240 grit minimum..p320 or p400...guess you already know that though eh?

    • @TheGunmanChannel
      @TheGunmanChannel  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I reckon Dylan's on to it. Slow the product down, try spraying outer surface first then do edges too, this helps minimise the overspray creating what I call a sandpit.
