    I was there. I happened to have seats right across from the pits. We had started to hear talk that something was up a little while before the start of the race, still we could not believe it when the cars started peeling off from the formation lap and backing into their pit stalls. It was a very bizarre day. I still follow F1 as my number 1 race series (I will watch almost any form of Motorsport. ) but I will never buy Michelin tires. IMS turn one has been banked at 9 degrees since 1909, IMS is one of the most well known race tracks on the planet, for Michelin to be somehow surprised by the turn and unable to make a tire for the tracks requirements shows an extreme degree of incompetence that makes it so that I will not put their junk on my car. Plus they screwed up the race which is a second strike, again no tire sales for you!.

    The factor a lot of people forget is Tony George and the indy circuit, he can deny it all he wants but if a chicane was put in and someone sued due to a injury caused by a crash due to that chicane, you can bet he would have gone after the FIA. I hate mosley and ecclestone but their hands were tied, they had to protect themselves.

      You may be right. Although I don't like the fact that both sides didn't try to come to a common solution

    • @joshtheking1772
      @joshtheking1772 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@F1History_What kind of solution do you think would have had the desired impact you're looking for? Its not the six cars that had a tire supplier that were prepared, its not the fans fault, its not the FiA's fault, its not Bridgestone's fault. IT'S MICHELIN'S FAULT, so Michelin left the race. Title sponsors dont pay at an event if their product isn't used. The US paid the price because of a European company and damaged the reputation of another country by their own admission.

    • @axemanracing6222
      @axemanracing6222 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@F1History_ The only solution to have had a race could have been:
      All Michelin teams pit every 8 laps to change the tyres and get a penalty for that. FIA said, they would bend the rules a bit and don't be too harsh on the penalties due to the 8-9 mandatory pit stops. But all Michelin teams decided NOT to race. So you can blame them.

    • @lewisb85
      @lewisb85 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@axemanracing6222 Other thing as well was bridgestone had enough tires to equip all the teams, their rep even said in GP racing magazine article looking at the 10th anniversary of the event they were prepared to sell all the teams tires for that event, Michelin said they would sue their teams for breach of contract if they did. I blame michelin as a company showing up with equipment not fit for purpose and kicking back at the teams when a solution was offered.

    I remember Kimi doing an unusually big burnout when the formation lap started and thinking it seemed excessive; later on he said he was giving the fans a little excitement. Thx Kimi. Anyways the rumors that the race wouldn’t happen were all over the local papers the morning of so it wasn’t a total shock. We did receive a refund and free tickets to next year’s race from Michelin, thx for that maybe 2% max of the cost to travel and stay in Indy for the race.

    I was at that race as a member of a support race organization. We wore the same colors as the Williams F1 team. The Grand Prix is always last race of the weekend and our race was done and over. I watched the start of the F1 race with my colleagues but we decided to leave halfway thru because the mood of the crowd was deteriorating pretty badly.
    As we hastily exited to the parking lots, we decided it was best to get out of our dark blue uniform shirts in case someone would think we were with the Williams F1 team, one of the Michelin customers and hence, non-starters. I clearly remember hustling to the car in the dirt parking lot in my undershirt, hoping they wouldn't notice my uniform pants of the same color.
    This was my second F1 race, the first had been days before in Montreal. What a difference! I am an American but I think that race may have been the one that got me hooked on F1. The mood was just so crazy all weekend and then the theatre on race day, just nuts. I've been a diehard fan ever since.

    I had to replay the 7:20 mark multiple times because it's the Allen County Court House in Downtown Fort Wayne, IN and the judge in the next still is Judge Fran Gull who is presiding over the current Delphi Murders trial.

    I remember watching this 'race' on the tv. Formula 1 had already become a snoozefest by this time anyway (just as it's now become again), so this just added to it. The FIA could have informed the fans about it but no. They had the money and sheer greed prevented them from returning it. The 'race' was a complete fiasco from start to finish

    I remember watching this on TV in disbelief that the Michelin cars did what they said there would do and that no solution was found. Whose to blame, for me it was Michelin as they failed to make a tyre that wouldn't fall to bits, FIA for not coming to a solution for the fans that had paid as if i had paid to travel to watch that id have gone ballisticly mad, and im a lifelong ferrari fan. This was something that should never have happened as F1 prides itself on being the best technology motorsport on earth with solutions to problems being what its all about, yet they utterly failed here. No blame to the 3 teams or Bridgestone, but everyone else yes as they must have known long enough before to come with a solution, even if it was a poor tyre for one event. I personally think to this day that the Michelin teams, and Michelin thought theyd be given special treatment and the track would be changed, but why should it? If they were banking, excuse the pun, on forcing changes by blackmailing the FIA and track owners, they lost and caused alot of hate towards F1.
    If anyone should have lost that day, Michelin should have been liable for all compensation and i say that believing they made the best road tyres, at that time. Sadly we're now stuck with Pirrelli that have no competition and struggle to make tyres that can last being ragged for 100% of any race now so F1 is now only about tyres. Im mot sire why F1 is so determined to destroy F1 but theyre succeeding. It might be a cash cow right now but id bet itll lose it all over the next five or so years unless they come up with a good formula that doesn't run over so many events. Quality before quantity. Greed will kill F1.

    BIG error.
    The Indianapolis Motor Speedway WAS in fact designed for testing.
    But Turn 13 was the only ORIGINAL TRACK turn on the F1 racecourse, and was never designed for the SPEEDS it routinely sees.

    • @nope1918
      @nope1918 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The problem was actually too much grip. What was causing the tires to fail was the lateral load being too much for the sidewall to handle. On a normal track surface, the tires wouldn't have enough grip to cause the sidewall to fail, the tire would slide first. But on the gritty, sandpaper-like surface the tires had way more grip and were able to apply a much higher lateral load, and over the course of a few laps it would cause the sidewall to fail.

    I like this race for the simple reason that the FIA decided to take a stand rather than bowing to pressure from the Michelin.
    It also sent a message to the Americans by telling them that if they wanted a slice of the F1 pie aka the pinnacle of motorsport.
    They had to build tracks designed specifically for it which they eventually did.

    Your video is so wrong. In 2005 Fernando Alonso won the F1 Driver Championship first off. It wasnt a season where Ferrari was dominating and getting faster and faster. Do your research at least before you post a BS video. Michelin came to Indianapolis unprepared and thats what it boiled down to. PERIOD. Bridgestone was prepared and as a result were able to compete. The other teams wanted a chicane before the final turn but making track changes at the time of the event would have resulted in a pulled sanctioning of the event. It was all Michelin and they didn't have a product that could compete on a level that ensured driver safety. Why would you fault the teams that had a very effective setup versus those that didn't? Was it a farce? Yes it was. Was that Bridgestone's fault that Michelin had a bad tire? NO. You should be ashamed of yourself for this video. Michelin, which is a French Company, screwed up a race in America, and killed Formula 1 in the US? REALLY? REALLY? It was the Sidewall of the tire tearing away from the traction surface of the tire that caused Michelin's problem. Damn, how can you do a video without knowing the facts. You're constantly blaming Bridgestone for Michelin's failure. Michelin didn't even compensate ALL the fans because of their failure. They offered only 20,000 tickets to be refunded when there was a crowd in excess of 100,000 people. They never accepted ANY formal responsibility for the race issues and still to this day haven't offered any kind of compensation. Your conspiracy theories are erroneous and have no place or are even rooted in reality.
    This video is just bad. Very poor video. Its full of half truths and enuendo. Very poor.

      Thank you for your criticism, but I think you have it wrong about the era of Ferrari's dominance.
      I meant that they dominated Formula 1 for the last 5 years until 2004.
      As for Michelin.
      I wasn't blaming Bridgestone. My idea was that the tire wars were the reason why this race happened. That is, if there was only one manufacturer, most likely this situation would not have happened.
