Brawn GP is a team that has just hit the Formula 1 scene like a lightning strike in 2009. A team that cost 1 £ was able to defeat a goliath. I can safely say that Brawn GP has changed Formula 1 forever, why?
When the team was created, the world was in the midst of a financial crisis. Honda, the Japanese Formula 1 team, was on the verge of collapse. But behind the scenes, a man ignited a quiet revolution...
What the hell happened?
Find out how the team, led by Ross Brawn, made important decisions and managed to save their existence. What helped Jenson Button and Rubens Barrichello to compete for the winning places.
How did the 2009 season end?
It's pretty damn intriguing, so watch to the end. I'll also look at the aftermath - how the short but bright flame of Brawn GP went out.

It doesn't matter whether it was the wheel that caused his death period the steering shaft coming apart cause the incident in the first place. The fact that he was on the brakes and the surface he was on couldn't slow him down because it was not being maintained properly or brought up to specification just aggravated the situation.

I watch this when it was being broadcast live and I watched the replay at least twice and it was painfully obvious that Santa was dead when he was sitting in the car before they got to him. I cannot State whether or not his heart was still beating. But they were not going to suddenly revived him at any time in the future. I have been involved in a number of accident Recreations and I also have the luck of having done work as a welder with many different types of exotic metals. Just from what I have heard of the patchwork job on the steering mechanism. It was woefully inadequate to the stresses involved. If they do not use the right metal. The Austin attic Zone can become quite brittle along with the heat affected Zone immediately adjacent to it becoming quite soft and very subject to fatigue failure. Nobody at that level of workmanship would have failed to know that that was a possible outcome to the ham-handed alteration of the steering column.

That head bob to the left was the moment Senna saw the piece of shit debris lying on the track that in a few tenths (hundredths?) of a second despite clearing the fronts speared a rear and good-bye Aryton. Steering post mod had fuck all to do with it.

Ultimately Senna desire to win was part of the reason. The steering wheel gave him a warning before it completely broke he was looking down checking it out before the crash. With something so crucial as the steering no chances can be taken , he had the option to slow down and pit and even forfeit the race. But beceause he didnt score any points in the first two races he was already way behind. He choose to gamble , because of his pride. That was the real undoing of Senna. And yes i believe the steering wheel broke , usually the most logical conclusion is the right one. The unfortunate part is it broke just at the most unforgiving part of the track. Senna already knew that part of the track was very dangerous. He gambled with his life , and sometimes things go wrong . Williams had no choice but to cover up the facts , as Italian law is severe on people. And team members could have ended up in jail , for what was a sporting accident.

I was 11 and on holiday in Butlins Skegness (my fellow Brits will get it) and this was on the big screen in the 'cinema'. My brother was 8 and a huge fan of F1 so we went for the early lunch that day then I took him to watch. As soon as it happened I saw an older man get up with his kids and I followed him. I just knew and said nothing. He saw me, took one look at my face and got a red coat to call our chalet. My dad came and without any agreement we spent the whole week ensuring my brother didn't find out. He only admitted to knowing all along this past Christmas Day, literally 5 days ago. We were looking at photos and he said we were doing so many activities compared to previous years when we had decided to spend a relaxing time a few hours earlier that he knew. It was the first time I really actively had to act like it was fine and my life long habit of journaling was born that weekend. So many things in my life have been worried out onto paper, so much stress that could have killed me because I lived with an undiagnosed heart condition has been let go through the action of writing it out. I wish Senna lived but I also can't deny my life has _literally_ been saved by the almost meditative practice of letting it out because of that horrific weekend that I also feel like it would do his memory and Ratzenburger's a disservice not to acknowledge it.

I believe that the cause of the crash was that the steering column failed at the turn in to the apex at Tamburello. The shaft had been coming apart in the lap-and-a-half leading up to it, once they came up to race speed. Senna clearly was aware of something happening, but was also in a heated battle with Schumacher. I’m quite sure that if he knew that he was about to die, he would have assigned a significant amount more weight to the change in steering feel, and much more quickly. I also believe that had he successfully negotiated Tamburello, he would have pulled off track. I believe that he was processing the fact that his car was now unsafe as we watched in real time. Unfortunately, he never got a chance to benefit from that conclusion. Looking at the modification to the steering shaft, I question not necessarily the manner in which they modified it, but rather the location they chose to make the modification. They simply cut the existing shaft next to the mounting bearing, and extended it with a slightly smaller piece of stock inserted into the existing shaft and then welded it at both junctions, forming an internal sleeve. Torsionally, this would be plenty strong of a repair. But the distance from the steering wheel to the shaft bearing where it attached to the car was quite large. The bending moment on the innermost weld joint, which was immediately adjacent to the fixed bearing, was great enough to cause a failure of both layers of the tubing at the weld joint. When you account for the fact that the steering wheel was being flexed and pulled as a result of a battle between two of the greatest drivers in the history of mankind, the bending moment was just too great, and the result is, unfortunately, etched into automotive history.

I don't think a driver like Senna would just let the car leave the road. According to FW that's what happend. Front wheels always want to return to the straight position. This happend and at that moment the on board camera stopped.
