That part was initially really tough for me to watch. Then, I noticed Donnelly's twisted legs and I just couldn't bring myself to watch at all for a few moments. Absolutely horrifying.

When the algorithm showed me the first episode of this series, I almost didn't click on it. I was afraid it was going to be a sadistic gorefest, as so many videos with a similar theme can be. I am so glad I gave it a shot, because it was that amazing balance of brutal honesty in its imagery and total respect for the human beings at the center of those images. Episodes 2 and now 3 have kept up the great standard. I am looking forward to Episode 4! And, as someone who has, I confess, been more of a CART/IndyCar fan than F1, I really can't wait to see your piece on Alex Zanardi.
I met Mike Hailwood in New Zealand in the mid 1970s, he had one of his F1 cars on display and he was chatting and explaining aspects of the car to all who asked. A very amenable bloke.
The sheer quality of this documentary is ASTOUNDING. The wait was well worth it, and I believe the quality is of such a high level that it could be something that I would see on Netflix, or Amazon Prime. Excellent work mate!

My favourite thing, and something that I paid attention to throughout the entirety of the premiere, is how you structured each of the crashes: 1) Giving the context and the background leading up to each crash (which, in some cases, helps lifting off the emotional baggage from a previous horrific crash). 2) Treating each of these crashes with profound respect for the people involved. 3) Narrating the aftermath of the crashes in a cathartic and emotional way, even when things didn't turn out for the better. I'm not sure if you have any writing background, but that kind of structure takes some serious skill to execute properly. And as much as this comment may look AI-generated; nah. Genuinely have outdone yourself yet again. I’ve watched Grand Prix at least a dozen times so far and have never once noticed the spinning cars or Jackie Stewart’s crash scene being caught on footage. 10/10
Wow. Truly a masterpiece, idk how to feel tho. Again a documentary who could easily be on tv. Or even in the fricking cinema. Its really well done and i can see the effort you put in there. The music all the pictures footage the storys the cutting, recording and writing a script, like huge respect. You really should be proud of yourself. Just thank you. I know Episode 4 will be the last one whats kinda sad. Because idk what happends after that. But i really hope there is more comming who goes in this direction. In a more calm melo direction. Because you are an absolute mastermind with thouse type of videos. With the scenes you picked and the mix from commentary, your commentary, than the engine noise and the music. Its just on a different level to 99% of TH-cam and better than some productions from ppl who have a complete production team behind them and money without limit. Dude made me nearly tear up. I hope we get more from you in this direction because this is something who makes me personally happy? One thing I like most about this series, is that it really shows the creator's love for the sport. As someone who's been watching F1 with great interest since I was 13 in 2006, I didn't know about several of these cases. Thanks for mentioning the history of the Rodriguez brothers and the Mexico track. Indeed, it was built inspired in Monza and was also 5 Km in length in the original configuration. I was a track marshall at the 1986 Mexican Grand Prix. The circuit was all about momentum and the key sections were the esses and the Peraltada corner. After Senna had his accident there, he campaigned furiously to remove the banking from the Peraltada and he was successful. The corner was not even a shadow of what if was before, and what Tilke did to the track is turn it into a sanitized and lame version of the original design. I would love to see the original banked Peraltada corner, but a stadium was built there, which was a baseball stadium (not in use anymore for sports), made the corner blind and dangerous. Formula E uses it because in the Formula E configuration, the corner is taken at much less speed. I do remember that accident by Phillipe Alliot and can confirm that the earth shook on impact. It was on a practice session.
I'm blown away by how well presented this is, again its mental looking back upon how far F1 has come-Awesome look at its history and sadly crashes that have claimed many lives and near death experiences. Thank you- cannot wait for Episode 4

Beautiful footage. A big thanks for keeping the original aspect ratio. Most creator cut it to 16:9 thus a lot of information get lost. Or even worse stretch it. 4:3 looks so much better like it was back then.

I saw both the Luciano Burti's crashes live. If in the Hockenheim one i thought he's been lucky in the Spa one i definitely thought he was done for. The view of Eddie Irvine helping and crying and swearing for help and the marshals unable to remove the tires and the view of the blankets over the body of Burti after he was moved from the barriers...i mean brutal. Sad that his career ended basically that that. He was kinda quick in bad cars. Better than a lot of paying drivers we saw on grid.

What happened with John Watson was he didn’t just made contact with the kerb, but he actually made contact with the wet grass, which was what caused his car to lose grip.
Great video! I read somewhere Dider Pironi also didn't return to F1 in 1986 as he would have had to give back all the insurance money he received after the accident. How true this is I'm not sure. Also, his partner was pregnant at the time of his death, and later gave birth to twin boys, who were named Didier and Gilles. Gilles joined Mercedes AMG Petronas as an engineer in 2014; and even accepted the constructor's trophy on the podium following the 2020 British Grand Prix
After i thoroughly enjoyed Episode 1 and Episode 2, despite the fact the sheer sadness they brought along, i was looking forward to Episode 3 and i wasn't disappointed. So much better then the average F1 documentary. The details, the stories, the horror. THE best series of F1 documentary out there. Fantastic material, some of the moments i remembered, some of them were new to me. What a fine piece of work you promised us....AND delivered! Kudoos 🙂
Im loving this series. Its sad to see all these horrific crashes, but im starting to sense a theme. Episode 1 - no one passed away. Episode 2 - people unfortunately passed away. Episode 3 - people didnt pass away, you also mentioned that rindt's story will continue in episode 4.

Thank you! The research comes from multiple sources. I basically watched every F1 race I could from 1980 over a 2 year period so alot of information came from just watching those. Race reports from the likes of motorsport magazine & autosport are also good. Usually I read multiple sources on the same subject just to make sure that everything is correct. I've listened to hours of podcasts & interviews which are good for learning about more personal stories such as Donnelly talking about Senna's breakfast. And many other smaller websites & books give a lot of good information too!
1:00:46 There's something really striking about that photo of the burnt car. Idk if it's the lens, the way it's cropped, but something about that composition feels eerily modern. It almost looks like it was taken vertically on a phone just recently. This whole thing has been incredible and this series feels like something that can be referenced and viewed for years to come. There are some incredibly gruesome and shocking car crashes in F1, and they never get easier to watch. But seeing Donnelly lying on the ground is... I'm wordless. What a horrific thing. He was so lucky.

Well done over an hour and a hour feature length video thats alot of work and editing to do! Of the crashes the Burti crash was brutal and could easily have been fatal. You could tell Martin Brundle was very concerned.
Once again, excellent work, Jack. You're raising the bar on YT F1 history coverage. A couple of minor points - the Spanish Grand Prix dates from well before the advent of F1, first running in 1913. Oddly enough, that race stands as the only Grand Prix win for Rolls-Royce. Secondly (and more a comment than a correction), when Jochen Rindt was suspicious of Chapman & Lotus, he was right to be. The crashes at Montjuic were totally avoidable, but Colin wanted to fiddle with the cars, experimenting in the race by extending the rear wings of both cars by nearly a foot each side. These extensions are clearly visible in the colour photo's, as the aluminium used was left unpainted. Cheers... G
Well done yet again mate, suberp from start to finish. As many others have already said, many thanks for all the effort you put into your videos, you clearly have a deep passion for the sport. And a big thanks for the sheer amount of research that goes into these too, its a history lesson in itself!
We tend to think of all F1 drivers as "heroes" in many ways, risking their lives for glory etc., but in a very real sense the true heroes are people like Hailwood and Purley. What they did goes far beyond anything else that happens in this silly little sport we're all obsessed with, throwing themselves into flames for the sake of another and with little regard for their own safety. These are people you would want by your side during any hard situation in life. They are heroes to humanity.
Way back in 1990 I was 14 years old and I was at the Monza racetrack with my father when Derek Warwick went off the track at the end of the parabolic curve that leads into the starting straight and crashed into the guard rail. We were sitting about a hundred meters from where the Lotus crashed. I still remember well the tens of thousands of people in the stands who stood up to see what condition Derek was in, but then as soon as he came out from under what remained of the car and made it clear that he was fine there was a huge round of applause, and also a big sigh of relief
Watching the part of Didier Pironi and Martin Donnely was absolutely heartbreaking. I knew from part 2 that Didier's crash was bad, but I did not expect such a gruesome crash. And what happened to Donnely was just horrifying. It's sad that these accidents aren't more well-known.
Watched all three episodes released so far today and they're all incredible. If you had access to the unreleased archives and were able to include talking head pieces with drivers, people at the team and senior involved, I feel like you could make these 30-1 hour episodes. With each of these episodes being series rather than single episodes. Seeing people discuss Wendlinger's accident in Monaco 1994 would be really fascinating considering Imola was the previous race. Max Moseley would be such a fascinating figure to include in this. The tone is appropriate. It's detailing the shock and horror which is the reality of some of these situations. It wouldn't surprise me if somebody mentions how we were lucky to not lose 5 drivers by Monaco in 1994 with Brundle's head, Barrichello barely missing a catchfence regularly called cheese graters then the two that did in Ratzenburger and Senna. Then Wendlinger in a coma at Monaco.

These videos are absolutely fantastic. I've heard about most of these crashes and seen my good share of footage, but you have found so much content that I had never seen before. Plus with the original broadcast and commentary!
I've never forgotten The Swerve's panic in trying to get to Burti. He knew how bad that crash could have been.
Again, you managed to come up with stories and incidents I had never heard of, despite following the sport for decades now.
This series is put together so well, it's always a pleasure to watch, despite the sometimes grim subject.

Beautiful footage. A big thanks for keeping the original aspect ratio. Most creator cut it to 16:9 thus a lot of information get lost. Or even worse stretch it. 4:3 looks so much better like it was back then.

This series is probably one of the best I've ever seen on Formula One. A perfect mix of emotional moments narrated with professionalism and full of cross references that make everything unique as an incredible but true heartbreaking story. Amazing job. Thank you!

I saw both the Luciano Burti's crashes live. If in the Hockenheim one i thought he's been lucky in the Spa one i definitely thought he was done for.
The view of Eddie Irvine helping and crying and swearing for help and the marshals unable to remove the tires and the view of the blankets over the body of Burti after he was moved from the barriers...i mean brutal. Sad that his career ended basically that that. He was kinda quick in bad cars. Better than a lot of paying drivers we saw on grid.
Another brilliant video. Loved the first two and this was just as good. Makes you really respect the advancements made in safety. Mike Hailwood was a legend..
The quality of these documentaries are amazing. The level of reseach and passion is evident. I love the way you present these incidents with respect and professionalism. I'm a newer f1 fan so I love to learn about the history.

What happened with John Watson was he didn’t just made contact with the kerb, but he actually made contact with the wet grass, which was what caused his car to lose grip.

I read somewhere Dider Pironi also didn't return to F1 in 1986 as he would have had to give back all the insurance money he received after the accident. How true this is I'm not sure.
Also, his partner was pregnant at the time of his death, and later gave birth to twin boys, who were named Didier and Gilles. Gilles joined Mercedes AMG Petronas as an engineer in 2014; and even accepted the constructor's trophy on the podium following the 2020 British Grand Prix

After i thoroughly enjoyed Episode 1 and Episode 2, despite the fact the sheer sadness they brought along, i was looking forward to Episode 3 and i wasn't disappointed. So much better then the average F1 documentary. The details, the stories, the horror. THE best series of F1 documentary out there. Fantastic material, some of the moments i remembered, some of them were new to me. What a fine piece of work you promised us....AND delivered! Kudoos 🙂
Im loving this series. Its sad to see all these horrific crashes, but im starting to sense a theme. Episode 1 - no one passed away. Episode 2 - people unfortunately passed away. Episode 3 - people didnt pass away, you also mentioned that rindt's story will continue in episode 4.

The research comes from multiple sources. I basically watched every F1 race I could from 1980 over a 2 year period so alot of information came from just watching those. Race reports from the likes of motorsport magazine & autosport are also good. Usually I read multiple sources on the same subject just to make sure that everything is correct. I've listened to hours of podcasts & interviews which are good for learning about more personal stories such as Donnelly talking about Senna's breakfast. And many other smaller websites & books give a lot of good information too!

There's something really striking about that photo of the burnt car. Idk if it's the lens, the way it's cropped, but something about that composition feels eerily modern. It almost looks like it was taken vertically on a phone just recently.

There are some incredibly gruesome and shocking car crashes in F1, and they never get easier to watch. But seeing Donnelly lying on the ground is... I'm wordless. What a horrific thing. He was so lucky.

Well done over an hour and a hour feature length video thats alot of work and editing to do! Of the crashes the Burti crash was brutal and could easily have been fatal. You could tell Martin Brundle was very concerned.

A couple of minor points - the Spanish Grand Prix dates from well before the advent of F1, first running in 1913. Oddly enough, that race stands as the only Grand Prix win for Rolls-Royce.
Secondly (and more a comment than a correction), when Jochen Rindt was suspicious of Chapman & Lotus, he was right to be. The crashes at Montjuic were totally avoidable, but Colin wanted to fiddle with the cars, experimenting in the race by extending the rear wings of both cars by nearly a foot each side. These extensions are clearly visible in the colour photo's, as the aluminium used was left unpainted.

We tend to think of all F1 drivers as "heroes" in many ways, risking their lives for glory etc., but in a very real sense the true heroes are people like Hailwood and Purley. What they did goes far beyond anything else that happens in this silly little sport we're all obsessed with, throwing themselves into flames for the sake of another and with little regard for their own safety. These are people you would want by your side during any hard situation in life. They are heroes to humanity.
I don't think of any race car driver as being heroic. They are playing a game. A very serious game but still a game. That does not equate to heroism.

Way back in 1990 I was 14 years old and I was at the Monza racetrack with my father when Derek Warwick went off the track at the end of the parabolic curve that leads into the starting straight and crashed into the guard rail. We were sitting about a hundred meters from where the Lotus crashed. I still remember well the tens of thousands of people in the stands who stood up to see what condition Derek was in, but then as soon as he came out from under what remained of the car and made it clear that he was fine there was a huge round of applause, and also a big sigh of relief
Watching the part of Didier Pironi and Martin Donnely was absolutely heartbreaking. I knew from part 2 that Didier's crash was bad, but I did not expect such a gruesome crash. And what happened to Donnely was just horrifying.
It's sad that these accidents aren't more well-known.
Watched all three episodes released so far today and they're all incredible. If you had access to the unreleased archives and were able to include talking head pieces with drivers, people at the team and senior involved, I feel like you could make these 30-1 hour episodes. With each of these episodes being series rather than single episodes. Seeing people discuss Wendlinger's accident in Monaco 1994 would be really fascinating considering Imola was the previous race. Max Moseley would be such a fascinating figure to include in this. The tone is appropriate. It's detailing the shock and horror which is the reality of some of these situations.
It wouldn't surprise me if somebody mentions how we were lucky to not lose 5 drivers by Monaco in 1994 with Brundle's head, Barrichello barely missing a catchfence regularly called cheese graters then the two that did in Ratzenburger and Senna. Then Wendlinger in a coma at Monaco.
