Amul is an emotion in India. It has become synonymous with dairy products. Amul not only did start a white revolution in India but also saved lakhs of farmers from exploitation. It is a brand that managed to get 40,000 Crores of Revenue. However, the story of Amul's inception is as interesting as its current business. Here in Pakistan we have highest rates of onions Rs.200/kg, tomatoes Rs.200/kg, wheat flour Rs.165/kg, and milk around Rs.150/liter. Glad to see Indians have lower and accessible rates of eatables.

My grandma told me her father used to bring her Polson butter in 1960s and it was such a huge deal back then for an average family to afford butter and now a days we simply don't care about how much products we waste mercilessly. 🙂

We have been doing it since 2016 (officially since 2020) under the Catalystic (socio-economic model)... Manthan is part of our training sessions! This movie helped many people from rural India to understand the concepts of SHGs & Co-ops., and participating with us, many of them are now trained under RSETIs in districts of Haryana & Punjab.
It is a very tough job to manage rural people, create awareness among them, teach, train, and skill them, and organize them, when on the other hand at the same time they are facing many social evils at their extreme, burdened under corruption at all levels. But they are willing to come out and be the change! They are with us, standing against all odds!
Manthan had one villain (of course it is a movie), but we are facing many villains at ground levels who don't want to allow these people to break their clutches of slavery as these people are cheap labor for them for decades!

My biology teacher used to say that "whenever I visit any birthday I try to buy Sweet or Amul Chocolate instead of Dairy Milk or other chocolate. Why we have to send our money to foreign when we can help our people by buying products from them."
My respect for Dr. Verghese Kurien increased manifold. He could have handed it to the govt entirely, making it a "nationalized industry", but then the bureaucrats would have eaten up the profits or have engaged in shady activities, robbing farmers of their due. Also, the fact that Amul is staunchly refusing to list itself on stock exchanges and becoming a "business" is another praiseworthy action.

This is a great example of how Unity and harmony within each other works
While pursuing my masters at NID, Ahmedabad I had the opportunity to visit Anand and the AMUL factory. Anand is a beautiful place and people are really friendly and kind.
I was working on a classroom project and during my research I found out that female students at schools were performing better than male students. But the catch was that most of them would get married right after school. May be some initiatives should be taken around encouraging women to continue their education and provide for the further growth and development of Anand.

The reason Amul's product quality has been maintained for so long is that it isn't listed on the stock exchange. Amul might have been one of the largest asset-valued companies today, but a stock exchange listing would've increased the likelihood that Amul being acquired by large corporations like Adani for financial gain, which would've resulted in a decline in the quality of the company's output. It's best the company's directors are chosen democratically by the union members rather than the shareholder with the largest number of shares.

Anand is my hometown and Amul Dairy where this white revolution started is almost in my backyard! I have met Dr Kurien and have worked in Tribhuvandas Foundation Co. We have had all noble personalities visited Amul from all over the world. My great granduncle worked in Polson Dairy and I have plenty of relatives and friends working in Amul. For those who don’t know, Anand is called ‘Milk City’. Dhruv, you have explained all these details about Amul brilliantly well. Congratulations to you and your entire team for the research. Just a little note though: It’s KHEDA. and not KAIRA. The real story is like this. KHEDA used to be a district which geographically falls between Ahmedabad and Baroda. Anand and Nadiad were (and still are) the biggest towns in KHEDA. During the British rule, the Britishers struggled to pronounce KHEDA as making ‘KH’ sound from epiglottis was too difficult for them. So, they started calling it KAIRA (KAY-RAA) and so it became KAIRA. Those two cooperatives you talked about in your video which Tribhuvandas first started in 1946 were Anand and Nadiad as they belonged to KHEDA district. Because it was KHEDA Cooperative and not KAIRA Cooperative. Some locals still don’t know this and call it KAIRA including the officials of the dairy itself! Anyway, white revolution is amongst all those ‘Satyagrahas’ which we tend to forget to appreciate while talking about Indian Independence. Thank you for spreading awareness about it. 🙏

There was/is an era were farmers (milk) kept Dr Kurien’s photo in their house mandir and worship him 😮 there was a state mourning when Dr Kurien passed away 🫡
