  • So as of lately I've noticed a few people keeping and eating Smallmouth bass so I decided to Shoot a Catch and Cook Smallmouth video of my own. I did not keep anything big and never would. I choose a small one that I deep hooked to keep. I also caught a few nice bonus fish including a real nice walleye. If you like what you see please drop a Sub!! I catch and fillet dozen's of smallies a year, good eats, which is why I fish.

Anyone who says you shouldn't keep a smallie dosen't own a stocked lake.

No mystery here. They’re very tasty. I keep them often. As long as you follow the regs you shouldn’t negatively affect the population. Keep if they’re legal and follow the rules.

I pretty much stick with 12-14, so the same ballpark, and only when the water is a reasonable temperature. That way, every one is super delicious.

So I found out the other day some Smallmouth season is actually closed. I was unaware of the season and I called the CO myself. Fortunately since I stepped forward he let me off with just a warning that was very kind of him and I appreciate it!

@@theinvasivespecies1119 I believe you can still keep them up there. You'll need to check the regs. North or hwy 53 you still can

I handline fish for rock bass and smallmouth in indiana a lot and rarely pass up on a legal sized smally for the pan. A personal favorite for my area

Great catch and cook video. I occasionally keep a smallmouth or two for the frying pan but only when the water has cooled off. I spent 30 yrs fishing the big muddy in Iowa, Illinois and Wisconsin fishing bass and particularly smalls. Great fish but I would never eat one from the Mississippi. They are a true mud flavor compared to lakes or cleaner running rivers. I can't wait for hard water and fishing them thru the ice. Looking forward to your ice fishing and trapping vids. The trapping vids bring me back to my trapping days. Can't do it anymore due to medical issues so I changed hobbies and professions to customer rod building and repair. New ballgame and I set my own hours. Have a great week!!

Got to keep the middle of the road bass, otherwise there will be too much competition for big ones. Every avid bass angler should practice selective harvest if they care about the sport.

Thanks for your video. Honnestly, I don't understand what would be the problem with keeping and eating that fish. Here, where I live, some stupid guys dropped a few of them in our river, where small mouths were not living. Those small mouths have eaten everything, so now, we are stuck with those, and they are considered trash fish. Same thing with muskies. We have too many of them, they are now a major problem. (The reason why it is illegal to bring live fish with us...)

Thanks!! I myself catch tons of walleyes and other better eating fish. But thought I'd try this video on a small one to see how they tasted. I love catching smallies and letting them all go. I got a pretty good smallie video up from this spring if you'd like to check it out. Thanks for watching!

Bass are more fun to catch and the 12-14" ones are delicious. Not everyone loves the taste of walleye. I prefer sunfish, perch, northern pike and crappie. If the water is cold and the bass is 12-13", I usually prefer the taste of bass too. Still, nothing beats a bluegill. They it is just a pain to clean 5-6 for a meal instead of 1 walleye.

Smallies are the business! You just need Alittle red wine vinegar mix with soy sauce to dip it in! You would have been doing backflips!

Actually it depends on the lake. A 5 yr old can be 17 or 18 inches if the lake is fertile enough. Just like a bluegill. A 10" one is generally 10yrs old be some lakes around here they grow that size in 5.
