If you've ever been told bass don't taste good, don't believe it. If you've ever been told keeping bass is unethical, don't believe that either. In this video, I'll explain why you should keep and eat bass, under the correct circumstances.

You make a really good observation, tournament participants want you to release them because they benefit from it, as long as money and prizes are involved, they will tell you and hate you for keeping them to feed your family. I could care less what sport fisherman do, just don't get in my business. I'll eat whatever I catch as long as I'm not breaking any laws and regulations

I'm definitely going to have to agree with you on this. Before I watch this I tended to be more of a catch-and-release but not totally against keeping them cuz I myself have kept Bass in the past. I am guilty of giving people Flack for keeping them recently. So I have to thank you for kind of bringing me back to reality. I know it's like going out with your dad as a kid catching a few fish that's especially in taking it home in your dad teaching you how to properly process it and cook it. I think that that kind of skill as a very valuable to.

I have caught smaller Crappie in a lake that Didn't have a Length Limit.
I did it for 2 Years.
After then the Size of the Crappie Increased in Length & Girth.
Eating Fish is Great. Much Better than McDonald's, because it's Fresh & Wild.
Yes! I couldn't agree more. Your example is the same concept as with bass. Take out the smaller ones to increase the size and quality.
You're 100% right. Unless you're on a body of water where the bass fishery is one of the main revenue generators for the area, I see no issue with keeping bass within the local regulations.
In our area, everyone is focused on walleye and bass are treated almost like a nuisance. My whole life, I was told they were garbage (mostly because smallmouth tend to have worms in the warmer months. A few years ago, we acquired land with access to the river and I decided to try a few early season smallies. They were terrific. We catch a lot of 10-14 inch bass and I make a point of keeping the early and late season ones. They are very similar to walleye except for a slightly firmer texture (less flakey).

They're a white meat fish that swim in the same waters of most other fish - not a huge deal to keep a few when there is a healthy population of fish to begin with.

Yes. Bass go good with oregano, lime juice a bit a complete seasoning and garlic. Sautéed slowly over a bit of butter or vegetable oil. You can season and refrigerate the bass a few hrs before cooking it.
You can also grill it.

I keep everything I fish, freshwater or salt. Unless it’s illegal to keep or genuinely not eatable. I could care less what others think or say. I’m there to enjoy my day, I’m not there to make the haters happy.

Yep - people ought to worry about themselves.
What I feel is wrong is to only fish with idea of doing catch and release. Why put the fish through all that stress just for sport?
That is an EXCELLENT point. I’ve often wondered that. Especially tournament fishing when people take fish from their regular living area, put them in a live well, measure them at the landing and then let them go right near the landing again.
I generally keep every legal bass that I catch, because they eat the other fish I like to catch
When I was a kid, about 45 years ago, we would always eat the bass. But times are much different. Fishing pressure is much greater. The number if fish killed from being caught is greater. It's estimated to be 16%. I thinking this your premise should be qualified based on the fishing pressure and related size of lake.
Exactly. Depends completely on the situation.
Older people I've spoken with about this (50-80 year olds) have told me that more fish were kept years ago in my area.

I have always told people that.
I agree now, especially with local lakes being overpopulated with smaller bass. The only problem is, they taste kinda bland or even grassy in the summer.

@@mattmarkowicz Okay! I haven't experienced the blandness or grassy tasty up here. Could be the water type/temps as well.
Soak it in ice water with some salt for an hour or linger will take the weedy taste out
I didn’t spend hours of my time doing research and spend my money on gear and licenses to come home empty handed! With inflation on the rise and everything getting more expensive I take hunting and fishing more seriously than some might.

Yes. If I had the choice, I prefer perch or walleye, but yes, bass do taste good when cooked well.

I believe that if someone has a fishing license and they catch a bass that is legal size and only take the limit that is allowed then they have every right to harvest that fish. This is coming from a strictly catch and release guy.

Ive cooked some 3# and 4# bass and i was shocked how tasteless they were. Absolutely zero flavor. I couldnt taste the fish at all. It was surprising.
I know when I hunt deer I shoot to just give a flesh wound, because everyone knows you shouldn't harvest deer. That is just as silly as saying you shouldn't keep a bass. Ethical harvesting is a good thing.

Been finding grubs on my bass in our farm pond. Would they stunt their growth? Should I treat the pond?

The Bible says in levitical health laws we should eat fish with fins and scales.... that includes bass but not catfish!
