Ahh Ice Age, where the expected box value is 1/30th of a sealed box, but opening it for the memories is priceless.

Demonic Consultation is a $16 card, so that’s one of the best pulls in the set

Necropotence at $47+ is the best card in this set.

Sweet! I pulled one out of a draft a few weeks back. Didn't know this card is so valuable, but I'm not surprised. It's really good in the right brew.

The only reprint of that card has been in a Secret Lair so that's why the price has been consistent.

First deck I built was 60 card mono black, 20 Swamps, 4 Dark rituals, 4 Hypnotic Spectors, 4 Terrors, 4 Sengir Vampire, 4 Royal Assassin, 2 Nightmares, 2 Sorceress Queens, 4 Nestling Imps, 4 Unholy Strength, 4 Will o Wisps, 4 Drudge Skeletons!! BEAST

First deck I built was a mono black deck in 95. I remember it had hypnotic spectres. Royal assassin's, icy manipulators, demonic horde among other cards. A friend helped me put it together after showing me the game. And I was also obsessed with art by Quinton Hoover. They definitely don't make em like they used to

I remember sitting down to dinner at a local restaurant having just picked up a starter deck for this set, the first cards I'd ever crack for it. One of my rares was Jester's Cap and I couldn't believe how valuable it was at the time since it was the #1 most expensive card for the set. Sadly I traded it away/sold it eventually, but the experience was more valuable than anything. Loved this set to death.

Started with 5th edition but went back and bought a starter box (10 starter decks) years ago of Ice Age just cuz I thought they were cool cards. Still one of my favorites sets if not favorite.

Very first deck I ever built was a white weenies. I can’t remember all the cards but basically just a ton of tiny white creatures mainly flyers along with a playset of archangel of tithes, honor of the pure and always watching

I bought a ton of Ice Age back in the day and never pulled a Jester's Cap. I ended up selling a binder full of cards for $75 to pay a couple bills.
My favorites of what I did pull: Icy Manipulator and Zuran Orb.

Thanks for taking us on an hour long trip down memory lane. This video bought back fond memories of old friends racing to the LGS to pick up the starter decks and booster boxes then rushing home to spend a couple hours breaking open the packs and trading cards, complaining about duplicate cards, and why Joey got 10 Demonic Consultations and someone else got 40 copies of Stone Rain . . . . exaggerating of course. Claiming I was a crappy MTG player is a compliment, I was horrible but I enjoyed making quirky decks just to screw around. My first deck was a blue revised with about 20 copies of Prodigal Sorcerer. It was not a great deck but it really ticked people off - take one point, take another, and another, oh how about one more . . Thanks for the memories Joey.

Here's a few things you can do about cumilitive upkeep.
Firstly run Aeon Hub (Each player skips their upkeep) so the cost never goes up... stays in play. it's a 5 drop artifact.
Secondly Chisei, Heart of Oceans. Each Upkeep it removes a counter from a perminant you control or is sacrificed. Cumilitive Upkeeps are now done with Age counters, and then you pay upkeep cost for each age counter. Chisei can keep those age counters down to 1 or 0 for 1 perminant.
Thirdly, Clockspinning. While this is probably the most mana intensive option, for 1 blue (and 3 colourless buyback) you can add or move a counter from a perminant or suspended card, again removing age counters. The advandage for this is multiple uses and can be used to catch up if you're behind on counters. Drawback is it's cast a lot more so more mana and more options for counterspells.

Cool Moss, I got that play mat! Zedruu was my first commander because the precon she comes in was pretty wacky with Zedruu giving out permanents to other players.
Anyways, what a nice trip down memory lane! Not so much my memories, I started in Odyssey block lol. But I did run into a bunch of Ice Age/Homelands cards in trade binders and bulk boxes in card shops when they were more plentiful. A little glad to see cards like Mystic Remora, Dance of the Dead, and Demonic Consultation are notoriously still seeing play today. Really does feel like Ice Age came from the Ice Age long ago lol ❄️
Rock In Paradise, Mark Lanegan. Not sure if you're a fan Joey, but he did amazing work with various bands and artists like Layne Staley (with Mad Season) and Queens of the Stone Age. 🤘

Epic!! This was also one of the first sets that I played. I started in Revised in 95 (they were still sold where I lived). Great memories to that era of Ice Age. We actually had an Ice Age draft and Ice Age only tournament. It actually was pretty good. Green/Red , Red/Black and White/Blue were probably the best decks. Anyway, thank you for the trip down memory lane. 🍻

Oh yes, this and homelands where my first sets. I can smell it all the way from here in Sweden. The nostalgia! A pile of all the "best cards" I had in one deck, 200+ cards. Screeching with joy when I finally manage to pull one of the big guys and play it haha.
None of us knew the rules good enough but we had a blast there in our teenage rooms, battling it out.

The first deck I build was green, blue and white. Based on a revised starter deck. I added blue to the mix, because I got a clone out of one of my first boosters and was mesmerised by it 😂 Later on that deck became a Blue/Red mid-range deck. Loved playing my Air Elementals (still do actually).

Everybody wanted killer bees, and carrion ants when this set first came out. I bought a case when it was released. I didn't see magic going anywhere at the time because ice Age didn't go off with a boom like legends or Arabian Nights did . Luckily I never sold out

  • @JosephParker_Nottheboxer
    @JosephParker_Nottheboxer 2 ปีที่แล้ว

To be aware, many of the reserve list cards from ice age were simply because they had banding and WotC has said they'll never print that mechanic again. Thus Formation, which gives banding, is technically on the reserve list.
The other reason why things are on the reserve list is they did away with the "draw a card during the next turns upkeep" cards so many are on the reserve list. One that isn't that's notable is Arcane Denial (Originially from Alliances). Now their are cards that do the same thing but draw a card immedaitely, so are basically superior.
I think all the depletion lands from Ice Age were also all added to the reserve list as it was again considered a poor mechanic, so added to the reserve list of cards never to be printed again.

I think the first deck I built was an infinite mana combo using Tidewater Minion and Dimir Aqueduct, they payoff was either Howl From Beyond or Soul Burn. I came in with OG Ravnica, but the friend teaching me was from Ice Age. I'm definitely still a combo player, but a little more refined xD

Not sure why you are hoping to pull a Jester's Mask ($8.00) or a Jester's Cap ($6.44), both trending down, when Necropotence is the most expensive card in this set at $47.49 and trending up. Plus Mystic Remora is the most expensive common at $10.39.

  • @nathanb065

    hoooo boy, lemme tell you!
First deck I made was a bunch of green cards I found in a penny bin at a store called vintage stock. All I remember is running 60 cards, a ton of spiders, a bunch of wurms, and not enough mana.
My first commander deck was even worse. Great idea, poor execution. I build the whole deck around a single card: Door to Nothingness. It was a five color artifact deck. Average cmc was around 6 I believe but I ran nothing to ramp mana or mana correct by any means. The amount of times I almost won because of door to nothingness was zero...because I NEVER FREAKING DREW THAT CARD!

I started getting into game development in 4th grade in my school library. I started with HTML thinking it would lead me to making an mmo later in life, but after studying a lot of development of games in general, when I started playing MTG in 8th grade I had a good concept of balance and mechanics in general for games, so my deck was awesome for a new player. Played a mono green infect deck

I actually never built a true deck or very memorable one. I started magic about 1998 or 1999, 12 years old. I was in store and saw the gold bordered championship decks for sale. I thought they were so cool sounded and had chosen to get that I think instead of other cards. I hardly understood what I had bought at the time and how "good" my deck truly was. It was Kai Buddes "Wildfire" deck.
Being not only a 12 year old but also new to the game, honestly the concept of the deck went way over my head. All my young mind understood at the time was cast some creatures and attack. I had no idea what these million mana cards are going to do. I had no idea why I had 4 artifacts that cost 2 just to add a mountain. My ADD may have never even finished reading Phyrexian Processor or Cursed scroll. But I kept it till this day and it's nonetheless the most nostalgic thing to me. Hah most people flip when they see stuff like Grim Monolith. I'm so used to the card it's like home. I've used the deck in 2022 and it's surprisingly capable for being over 20 years old. It's definitely aged and definitely must've been a whole new dynamic in 1999 meta. It's in good condition for being unsleeved 2 decades and something a kid used to bring to middle school. Edges are a ever so slightly rough but they honestly look and feel great in sleeves now.
What I would give to go back and get more of those or just experience the others. Some of them are crazy expensive now if sealed and all in tact.

My very first deck was INSANE. I found Everything for Mono-green Elves (Including Eladamri Lord of Leaves) in a bulk bin that the owners let me take cards from for free!
This was back when Invasion was popping off so I was doing the Type 2 format. And the only deck at my LGS that could beat me at the time was Silvers!
I was running 4 Vitalizing Winds because of the 4 Priest of Titania's and the 3 Titania's Chosen. There were no Gaea's Cradle's in it, but the deck was great because Invasion they printed Elvish Champion for the first time! So i had 4 of those in the deck too from just lending people the deck to play in a tournament, and they'd give me the Champions for free!
