  • Cedric Phillips and Patrick Sullivan are here for their deep dive on Magic's sixth expansion - Ice Age!
The duo dissect Magic's biggest swing yet, with their thoughts on cumulative upkeep, snow lands, the introduction of cantrips, far too many color hosers, and the card that Inquest said was the worst card in the set!

Funny enough, both pairs of Pyroblast/Hydroblast and Order of the Sacred Torch/Stromgard Cabal were left out of the hoser count, so there's actually TWENTY-NINE HOSERS in this set. TWENTY. NINE. What a wild time.

Can we talk about Chaos Lord & Chaos Moon? They require players to count every single permanent in play, every single turn. On the whole battlefield! I played ONE game in my life featuring Chaos Lord, **IN 1996**, and I still remember it extremely vividly because of how absurd the experience was.

Old School 95 magic - where you splash the Swedish format w/ Ice Age - is insanely fun. Zuran Orb makes Lich Mirror much more viable. Using Eureka to drop the Polar Kraken with instill energy and concordant crossroads is one of the funnest plays I ever did.

I have no idea why as a player that started less than a year ago, looking through ice age cards is so cool to me. Maybe I'm a lunatic but I wish I could play a game with an ice age deck. It just seems like it would be so crazy and swingy, and all the art is so totally varied. There are so many whacky cards in this set it would just be so exciting to see what shows up each turn

Fun trivia I learned from Drew Tucker. The art for Flare was the original art meant for the card Wrath of God. Late in development, they chose to change the artwork to Hoover's piece.

SO much nostalgia from this set. It was the newest set when I first started playing (the first time) MTG. I remember getting a copy of Inquest and thinking the Ice Age cards looked so awesome compared to the older cards...also notable in those inquest was how expensive Black Lotus and the Moxen seemed to a 6th grader in 1995 at $300 and $100 each.

The perfect upload for my Friday evening. Ice Age had just come out around the time I started, and I have tons of nostalgia for it. For all the silliness of them, I'm incredibly partial to the Snow-Covered Forest and Snow-Covered Mountain-just unforgettable art. Norrit, too. Ice Age gets way too much hate. I really think it course corrected a lot of the errors that WotC made with the early expansions. They’re still figuring out the formula here but you can tell they’re improving things without just power creeping it all.

There's a few 10/10 ideas, a few 0/10 ideas. Many 5/10 ideas. But the concept is amazing. So I feel like it should grade higher than other earlier sets. I don't think it's all that bad.

It's so wild to watch them talk about Meteor Shower because in a way, that WAS the card that got me into magic. My pick for blowout limited card is Ray of Command. Basically every combat declaration has to considered under the lens of "what happens if they steal one of my creatures in combat and use it to block the others."
There are higher impact cards like Fire Covenant which can be 3 mana Plague Wind. But Ray of Command at common means you experience it frequently.

I have "fond" memories of playing a Zur's Weirding/Firemane Angel control deck when both were legal in standard. Some opponents had so little idea what Weirding did that they would play out a few more turns of the game, drawing no more cards, in a sort of daze.

2:02:49 I just love how Necropotence was literally declared the worst card in the set by Inquest, only to then warp the entire game around itself, and be banned or restricted in every format except type II (for reasons that I will never understand, it didn’t catch a ban in Type II). The inquest part seems to be mostly lost to history, and I tell people about it occasionally to get a good laugh out of that fact!

this might also be the set I cracked the most of, looking for first Stormbind and then Necropotence....yes, I thought Stormbind was insane and Necropotence was garbage....thankfully by the time I realized my mistake I had a few copies of Necropotence already...but this was also an easy way to get Swords and Incinerate for all my decks so I have no regrets...many after school days and weekends spent cutting grass and hauling trash in my neighborhood for spare change to buy packs of Ice Age...

I will defend cumilitive upkeep as a theme. It could be seen as the snow cumiliating. So every day there is more snow, as it's in an ice age, so the numbers grow, thawing and such make more sense towards alliances and such once the snow starts to melt.

I love Polar Kraken so much. And honestly on the scale of other big creatures with drawbacks at the time, it's not that bad. Now I'm not saying it's GOOD, but compare Kraken to things like Leviathan, Colossus of Sardia and Force of Nature. Polar Kraken is WAY better than them. Sacrificing lands each turn isn't that bad when you already needed 11 lands to cast it in the first place, and it only needs to attack once or twice anyway

Pronunciation help: every 'J' in the set is pronounced like an English 'Y', so Kjeldoran is 'Kyell-doh-ran' and Fylgja is 'Feelg-yuh'
General Jarkeld was the inspiration for Ulfric Stormcloak in Skyrim.
Hyalopterous Lemure: Everyone knows that artist Richard Thomas confused lemure (a restless spirit in Roman mythology) with lemur (a tree-dwelling mammal), but he had to look up what hyalopterous meant (it means a lesser order of divine beings), and ended up with hymenopterous by mistake (which is the order of insects that includes ants, bees and wasps, hence the lemur's insect wings).

Shanodin Dryads was errataed from a Nymph to a Dryad in 6th edition. However, they eventually split the difference, as its present creature type is Nymph Dryad! Since updated creature types were being mentioned, I'd say Pat gets the bonus points there.
As a fun fact, almost the exact same thing happened in 2020. Theros Beyond Death had a cycle of Theros's 5 varieties of Nymphs across the colors, with an Alseid, a Naiad, a Lampad, an Oread, and a Dryad. All five were printed with creature type Nymph. But after public outcry, Dryad of the Ilysian Grove - once again, a green Nymph - was errataed to Nymph Dryad.

Suggestion: During the awards ceremony, after you've revealed your picks/the award (i.e during the discussion afterwards) could you keep the award/name of the award on screen somewhere? Sometimes I forget what award y'all are debating/discussing and it'd be nice to have a glance and see the name or icon and that might jog my memory. Doesn't need to take up much screen real esate.
That's also just on me for having a short attention span/being easily distracted though!

I started playing Magic within a month or so of Ice Age being released, IIRC. So yeah, the newest sets when I started playing were Ice Age and 4th edition. Ice Age is the first set that I got current packs of, and my first tournament was Ice Age sealed deck, which I was bad at, and in retrospect, as a limited format, was awful! But this set is still a ton of nostalgia for me!

One thing I do enjoy about snow lands is it is IMO a better way to do something like Imperiosaur, making it that you must use a basic land to cast something/ activate an ability, and then having the option to have stuff like the ETB tapped snow duals be able to fix your "basic lands matters" deck, rather than just having to use basic lands, if that make any sense.
I tried to make a little fan made set file that was basic lands matter once a LONG time ago. Modern Horizons and Kaldhiem's snow themes did a lot of the things I tried to design better by using snow instead.

To answer your question about the best Limited card(s) in Ice Age:
It's Fire Covenant, which was printed at Uncommon. Just an absolutely busted card for limited play; it is one of the VERY few cards I had to cut from my Peasant Cube for power-level reasons (the others are Sol Ring, Mana Drain, etc.)
The runners-up for that position are Icy Manipulator (old reliable), Karplusan Yeti (repeatable small-creature removal on a playable body, in context), Skull Catapult (MUCH stronger back when you could put combat damage on the stack), and Hecatomb (find 4 trash creatures to sacrifice, and then you basically just win the game).

Started playing in 1997 and early in my days, I wanted to play Snow-Covered Lands because I liked the art on them over 4th Edition Lands and Mirage (that's all the choices we got, 3 sets of lands). I was told not to because of cards like Icequake and Thermokarst, which were just in people's decks, and you could just get punished for no gameplay reason. I've never really gotten over that, actually, and every time I think to include snow lands, I think of whether they might just bite me somehow (now, they don't, which feels strange too). That's another big part of the failure, I think, that Snow-covered lands fail as a "hey, this is neat" aesthetic because of the random punisher cards.

By the way, the names of the talismans are not made up Magic words. They're actual English words for materials that are actually used to make jewelry.

For those who want to know a little more about the Ice Age prerelease, I would recommend Marc Rosewaters podcast episode about it. Marc also played at that tournament, attending it as a reporter. He probably would have made top cut if he didn't drop out due to his coverage responsibilities.

That part where Patrick couldn’t guess the counters was hilarious.

Hearing Cedric talk about polar kraken reminds me of me and tajuru pathwarden; 5/4 vigilance trample for 4G and was a powerhouse in the first constructed deck I made. Sometimes it is just "big creatures"

2:06:39 According to a story going around my game store back in the days of Ice Age is that Jester ‘s Cap is also a self portrait of Dan Frazier.

I think the best limited card in the set is Icy Manipulator.
    Runner ups:
    Skull Catapult
    Fire Covenant
    Binding Grasp

My first Stompy deck was a bunch of birds of paradise, scribe sprites, llanowar elves, mons goblin raiders, ornithopters, concordant crossroads, and this guy.
And you could usually swing for lethal on literally turn 4.

I love the art on Karplusan Yeti from 9th Edition so much I bought a foil.

Awesome episode, I still love Ice Age despite how bad or unfun a lot of its card mechanics are. I guess my nostalgia is based on the art and the 'feel' of the cards, it was also one of the very first sets I bought packs of at my local comic store, it was all so new and exciting back then.

Fylgja was also a misprint in Ice Age, it was printed with the old white mana symbols. If I remember correctly this was because it was a preview card in one of the old magazines.
Edit: HAHA, I should watch the whole video.

Harsh but fair review. Will Coldsnap beat Ice Age? Can't wait to find out. And thanks for making this podcast/youtube show.

It feels a little weird to me, (because I also didn't experience playing this set but have since come across many of the odd and weirdly worded cards for my collection,) but Ice Age seems like it would be kind of fun (more like better😂) to just watch *others* play with all the crazy designs and matchups.
Do you want to play with 15, no, 20, _no,_ 25, _NO,_ 27 hosers? Do you want to keep track of 6 different upkeep triggers? Do you want to wonder if that glass bead on your creature is a +1/+1, +0/+1, music, snow, or brownie counter?
I mean, that's what a notepad is for, but isn't it a lot more fun to watch your friends board get wiped, to see their 4 creatures never untap, and to watch them fumble around as they track their mana pool because their mountains tap for black, and their swamps tap for green?
You know what... Writing this all out is even too hard to handle.
Let's just bust out some regular cards and play a hand or two of poker...

No one played limited back then. So it was more turn 1; Swamp, Dark Ritual, Necropotence, draw 5 or 6 cards, go.

I remember the most hyped or overrated cards from this set being the cap and mask...they were the most expensive too by alot. Also alot of hype for a icy manipulator reprint. I think icy was the best limited card from the set.
