That Hyalopterous Lemure card has a unique history. The reason the art depicts a lemur is because the artist had never heard of a lemure (a restless spirit of the recently deceased...of Latin origin). Said card, in conjunction with Alchor's Tomb (which the artist misheard tomb instead of tome) is what led to the Bronze Calendar card from Unglued (which features a colander as the artwork).

I've never played Magic in my entire life, but for some reason, I am drawn to these videos. Can't stop watching. What's wrong with me? Should I start playing? I don't understand.

Magic is one of the greatest games ever made. You should give it a try. There are many different formats and many ways to play now!
The card that makes them broken is Solemnity from Hours of Devastation. The cumulative upkeep makes you place an age counter on it and then pay the cost for each age counter. Solemnity makes it so the cards can't gain counters and therefore no longer have an upkeep cost.
You can also get around cumulative upkeep/fading/vanishing etc w/ sundial of the infinite, although not helpful if you need the remainder of the turn. . . .

I've been going through a lot of your videos this week Rudy, and I have to say I love it. Your videos are very inspirational, and even though I'm a huge Timmy with a floppy tacos for rest of my life, your videos made me think about trying out something new. I do hope that eventually you hire some college dropout nerd and make your magic shop a real shop, I feel like it deserves to be one.

The best part of these old box videos is somewhere around the 3-5 min mark when you get around to opening, you have a super serious discussion of how we need to "look" at how these packs "feel". Keep that irony game strong Rudy...

The card you're thinking about that breaks cumulative upkeep is Solemnity. Solemnity prevents everything from getting counters. The actual mechanic of cumulative upkeep is "This card get's an age counter each upkeep.....blagblah", so it never gets to tick up.
Depletion lands are now dual lands with solemnity
Takes me back! I remember hating the dual lands in this set and the comic store told me we couldn't use dual lands from the original set for tournament's. I was like well that's it for this game. Glad it still here! Even looking at Ice Age makes me smile!

Back in the day, a local pizza restaurant had a saturday night magic tournament, and the prize was pizza and beer (if you were at least 21). The double monkey start got me more than one large pepperoni and pitcher of MGD.

Counters can't be put on artifacts, creatures, enchantments, or lands.
Rudy, I LOVED this video! Ice Age was my JAM. I stared with Fallen Empires (don't laugh), Chronicles (don't laugh), and 4th Edition. When Ice Age came, I came. I mean went.

Anyway: my vote is when you open old packs, please lovingly look at every common card, too. These youngsters won't know the joy of seeing a Rime Dryad or Armor of Faith in real life. 👍👍👍

Solemnity from Hour of Devastation prevents counters going onto permanents which prevents culmative upkeep from adding age counters and allows you to get all the upside and none of the downside of these cards.
Elemental Augury is actually a really powerful ability. You get to control your opponent's draw steps
All of those Hydroblasts, Pyroblasts, Mystic Remora, and Counterspells. They are likely worth more than all of the rares you pulled.
The two painlands are presumably the best ones in there.

Gotta remember that the print runs today are higher than IA but so many started playing during this time that 99% of 'pack free' cards have been played meaning the NM+-M cards are quite scarce to rare meaning undervalued. 10-20yrs from now (2020)...these cards will have appreciated nicely. MO

My first mtg purchase was an ice age deck. Had no idea what I was doing but the art was so great and varied.
Around when this set came out I bought a box and traded it to a guy for a Juzam Djinn. The guys thought I was dumb since the Juzam was only worth $50-75 at the time. This guy had 3 copies with one having unusually dark vibrant color. This made my playset! ...... wish I still had them :-p
I'm as high as Mount Kilimandjaro right now and this video at x1.5 speed is one of the best things to have ever happened to mankind. My lustrous taco is well rolled, solid and ready to go.

Love these old box openings.
Adarkar wastes is great. It gives you two different types of Mana and doesn't come in tapped as well as a colorless with no penalty. If you're playing white you can easily heal the damage from the colored mana.
Ice Age, where random packing still could go wrong :)

The Floppy Fish at commander, is a second copy (just for a while, because cumulative) of Rystic study (yeah that "hated" card) for a few turns, you get enough cards on multiplayer if you pay the upkeep just 2 times.

Just went back to this after Rudy's update today about Ice Age singles popping. Wow. Just wow.
No jesters cap or jesters mask I was really hoping to see that. Least you got an icy. They were worth 15-20$ in that age. Jesters cap was number one in the scrye top 10 worth 30$. Zuran orb with crucible of worlds gave you 2 life per turn and was a good extended deck. Also demonic consultation was in possibly the best deck ever called "trix". You would name necropotence and exile 10 cards the flip to a necro, play the necro draw like 15 cards the next turn and play illusion of grandeur and gain 20 life then draws 15-20 more cards and donate the illusion to the opponent and then hoodwink it and they loose 20 life in the spot with 4 force of wills as back up in your 25 card hand lol. Unbeatable!!!!
6:00 Wow nice pack opening (below.) The reason behind this is, Wizards' sorter wasn't that good back in the day. For that reason, people called the Legends booster boxes Legends(A) and Legends(B), because the set was so large that the cards were shuffled semi-randomly, instead of randomly. Meaning - if you got cards from the Legends(A) box, you wouldn't be getting many cards from Legends(B.) In that same token, Ice Age was so large that you could buy 3 boxes and not get the rare you wanted.

the remora is a 1 mana rhystic study with solemnity combo, and it makes opponents tap 4 mana to keep you from drawing instead of 1, like rhystic study

Remember opening Ice Age back in the day. Recently played with Elemental Augury in EDH. Its pretty depressing for opponents when you alter their top 3 liberary cards. "You will draw lands for the next ten turns". Also, eon hub stops upkeep since it exists a long...long time ago.
I was around for the days of ice age. Only now do I see that these commons are better than most of the rares. If you let me keep one of those 3 piles for myself I'd def take the commons.
I remember playing pyroblasts in burn decks back in the day 😁 Remember saying that when ice age came out, was like most of the cards are good but the mana costs are too high. Was like what were they thinking when they made the set... lets increase the cost of everything, and then to add insult to injury we'll make some non basic lands deplete over time making the mana situation worse, it'll be the best set ever
Mystic Remora is played in most blue EDH decks as a draw engine for a few turns(prior to Solemnity coming out) and as a cheaper alternative to Rhystic Study.

In The Dark they were worried about Power Creep. In Fallen Empires, Homelands, and Ice Age they reset the power level to “very low” and started power creeping upward again afterwards.
Rudy, the card you're looking for to suspend upkeep is eon hub from 5 dawn I think. I used it to avoid echo costs and tore up the battlefield.
I started playing roughly around the time Ice Age came out, so I have a TON of those cards.. :)

WTC was definitely scared of power creep. Part of the reason I quit after Ice Age. At that time just seemed like all the good cards were in older sets and WTC wouldn't re-print them.
I love how the Urzas block is amazing compared to previous sets. It's like they knew and were trying to correct their mistake and ended up printing crazy stuff. Even uncommons from urzas are better than rares from the previous sets.

I consider Urza's to be a mistake since the "good cards" are generally OP as shit. They should have never made the untap lands mechanic.
I forgot I had the same thinking... Know I remembered. Old cards were so more powerful. Type2 format (standard) solved this problem, but I didn't play Type2 because I had no LGS near me that had tournament.... So I only played casual. And definitely could not afford to keep buying new cards all the time.
That's why commander is really popular. It's like legacy, but cheaper... But I don't like having to use 100 cards...

I played that wall in my first deck, and yes I would attack with it, and yes it was awesome.
the reason all the cumulative upkeep cards are going up is because solemnity prevents the time counters being put on them. I.E. no time counters = nothing to pay. Free cards no draw back.
mystic remora stays out indefinably and you always draw cards off of non creature spells.
Rudy, you pulled Marton Stromgold. Combined with Thallids from Fallen Empires it was a key to my first competitive deck.

I know you were sort of intentionally hamming it up but really this brought me back. Even though you were acting, you really captured that feeling of being a kid and ripping through packs and being excited even at the shitty cards just because they were cool. *sigh* memories
Also, audio is a little weird with headphones. It's really directional so when you head sways left and right I hear you more in one ear which sounds bizarre.

I've had a Necropotence for a billion years and when I was a kid I had no idea it was good. I was like - why would I want to hurt myself to do something I get to do every turn for free - that's dumb...
The thing with cumulative upkeep is that the cu counts as counters and there's something in the new set that prevents people from putting counters on so u end up not having to pay anything if u play the new card first

1st set I ever opened an entire box of. My friends Mom bought it for us for cleaning the entire house. We split the packs down the middle ... I remember he didn't get anything good in his packs and I got all the good shit ... pretty sure his mom was pissed at me. Not really sure why she was mad that I randomly opened the good stuff and her son got hossed lol. Not like I planned it that way!?
