Man, that old school art is absolutely beautiful. I really wish more card games would go back to art like this. I think that is what’s drawing me to MetaZoo. I’m a sucker for the old school, hand drawn art!
I mean, it's still hand drawn, and there are still traditional artists in MtG, they just have a different style they follow nowadays. It's all made to look more "professional."
What wizards has done right: pulled me back into mtg after almost 20 years with sets like Modern Horizons, Jumpstart and Commander Legends. Amazing sets that I never get tired if buying or cracking. Sharing the experience with my 7yr old daughter is the cherry on top.She bow opens EVERY pack I purchase in hopes of finding spice. Skadoosh has officially entered her vocabulary too. What wizards has done wrong: Midnight Hunt, Crimson Vow, and the terrible secret lairs. They have also oversaturated the game with variants. Nothing feels special anymore. Foils and retros are fine. Collector boxes, theme boxes, full art, showcase, sketched, etched, borderless, and everything else is too much. The new gilded cards look cool, but I just don't care anymore. In any case, I love what ya do Joey. Thanks for your efforts in showing me what is and isnt worth my time or money. Your trips to poundtown for the sake of the players and the game are appreciated. The vintage breaks are something special. It's like a nostalgic trip though time. Anyways...you rock brother. Someday I'd love to buy you and Sabrina a beer. With barely restrained anticipation we watched the packs get opened, Joey's casual running commentary attempting to distract us from the undiscovered treasures. Hurry, get on to the next pack, my bladder is ready to burst but I don't want to pause or stop the video. As the packets slowly dwindled the hope for the mythic treasures of old reached untold heights but there was the subtle and nagging feeling that this might not be the fabled storehouse of fortune and glory legends have claimed. From what I remember after watching this was that Stroke of Genius, Time Spiral and Tolarian Academy often came together in the same box. Also, fun fact for many who probably have never heard this before, but when WotC banned a bunch of these powerful cards not long after they came out, if you bought a pack and opened a banned card (Academy, Fluctuator, etc) you could mail it to WotC and they would mail you back a new pack. Think how many top cards got sent in and what they are worth today. I wonder if they shredded them, making the ones that stayed in circulation that much more rare/valuable. The Fluctuator deck back then was crazy, so even though it wasnt worth much, people kept them to play the deck, meanwhile Academy, I know people who sent theirs in. I built a casual deck with 4x for fun, since they were like $5.00... The 2 most wanted pulls back then were Morphling and Sneak Attack.
My wife is a hardcore MTG foil collector, so for her birthday I gave her 7th Ed AND a Mercadian Masques BBs. She did well on both boxes and pulled a foil Final Fortune from 7th, but out of the last pack of MM she pulled a foil Rishadan Port, and she'd already pulled one foil rare out of the box (a Black Market). It was insane, she's by far the luckiest person I know when it comes to box/pack openings.
34:42 I bought out Great Whale to prove a point to somebody about how easily the market can be manipulated for some lower end reserve list cards. Always happy to hear that spike get mentioned.
Man I just really need that MH1 Urza. One thing Magic has continued to do right is put more cards out to bring in a wider range of collectors to the game. Adding even more awesome friends and family to the community. That's my favorite part cause I love all you guys and so thankful for every friend I've met in here. And to know that some of my best friends that I have, is all thanks to this game for bringing such a wide variety of people together.

As it is nice to have foils for at every turn I just wish they were more scarce. I remember opening my first pack of Mirrodin and getting a foil Leveler and that feeling man, was just awesome. I miss that excitement of foils being rare. Maybe it's just me.
I remember opening two of these boxes on Christmas when I was 10 years old. I pulled everything from this set multiple times. Such good memories of my family.

Having prerelease truly be the first place to try out a new set at LGS was great. Went to my first prerelease a week ago, ended up having a blast and winning a couple packs as well!
I actually really appreciate the inclusion of the punch out tokens in the set boosters, they come in handy when you need to identify something randomly.
I'm still fairly new to the world of MTG, only being able to start a couple years ago, but I've always found the world of MTG so fascinating, literal building a story not only inside the cards, but even outside of the game as well! I've been into trading card games ever since I was kid, but MTG takes the cake by a long shot. I’ve been waiting for this one. I recently got a Gaea’s Cradle for one of my favorite commander decks (Yisan, The Wanderer Bard) and once I heard you were opening the Urza block I wanted to see if you could pull another Cradle.
I had an all foil elf deck, with 4 foil Gaia's cradles, and used to have a few other non foil cradles. Ton of duel lands. I remember getting 2 dollar packs of urzas at card shows the guy would hook it up. I was only 13 I think, stopped playing my first year of high school unfortunately and sold all my cards online for like 500 dollars total in 2000. Man I never imagined that my collection would probably be worth like 50k or so nowadays

WOTC did a great job with Neon dynasty, it's the set that really got me into playing magic as a new hobby and checking out my LGS and i'm loving the experience
These videos really help lower the temptation to open all the packs I have stashed away. Sure you might get lucky, but the vast majority of the time it's a one-way ticket to hosetown
One thing wizards is doing right, is making cards more available, not just as a product but singles in the sense where they are a lot more affordable due to all the variants even though that can get exhausting. My favorite thing is this newest set, new capenna. Its the first set in a long time where i just can’t help myself in wanting to buy more of it even though i have everything i want from it. The set boosters in this set have been spiked with goodies. I pulled 3 mythics yesterday in a set booster which were twilight prophet (list) perrie (commander), and ziatora (regular art) i popped so much. I already told myself not to buy more but i dont see that holding. Ill probably donate the cards i pull to my friends if i do lol. Lastly the foils from new capenna except for the foil lands in the set booster bundle look much better than past sets. The foiling looks darker imo which i like because it makes the card pop more, especially on green and blue cards.
I think one thing wizards is doing right now is chase cards. It keeps people opening the product and fills the market with singles instead of people hoarding sealed boxes
i love what WOTC did with multicolor with New Cappena. even if people didnt enjoy the theme, I found it really fun to play at my LGS. The mana fixing was AWESOME.

WOTC has done a whole heap load of new things in this past year, but if I had to narrow it to one each, here it is: Pro: The collector booster boxes are my favorite new addition to magic as long as pull rates remain favoring the older sets (Opening will no longer be fun if the pull rates increase as they did in Streets of New Capenna). Con: I am all for the changes that WOTC has been throwing at the community, but maybe we could slow it down a bit. The changes have been coming at us a bit fast to keep up with, but other than that, the change seems pretty good so far. Also, CONGRATS DAVE!!!!!! So deserved!!!

You know what would be shocking? If they actually could make a foil card that doesn’t curl like a damn Pringle. I’d be even happier if they went back to the original old school foiling technique they used to use.
Great video! One thing that WotC is doing right is they are pumping out the product. Some people don't like the amount of product hitting the stores and wallet fatigue is a real thing, but I can't stand it when a game goes stale because of the long down period between releases. I have seen many games die out because of the lack of new product. I say keep pumping product WotC. I can choose what products I can afford.
I think WotC is doing a good job with the overall story of the lash few sets. They are giving us clues for, I think, a Phyrexia themed set in the very near future! My first card that I got when I was young was a Phyrexian Negator, so Phyrexia always has a soft spot in my heart! Seeing those preators "invading" new planes is pretty interesting! So fun diving in childhood memories! I like how the list have been revised to make web cards more available for broader player mass. Better having a tutor and choosing not to use it then having none in envy for it.
It hurts to see how the value of some of these cards dropped. I remember how insanely proud I was when I had two(!) Serra Avatars back then. I traded so much for these. They were around 30$ back then and same with Stroke of Genius.. But I think it hurts more to see the prices that went up lol.. I wish I kept my collection or at least the gems like the mox diamonds and cradles etc...thanks for this great nostalgia trip!
I remember back in '99 I played a silly green stompy deck at a tournament with 4 crop rotations and 4 cradles :D those weren't mine though. luckily now I have one that I got when it was like 30 bucks.
WotC has certainly gotten into a groove with the rarity of certain cards. My only complaint is the sheer amount of product that gets pumped out. SICK Cradle btw!!!
The thing I feel wizards has been doing right about lately is that they have been trying to cut down on plastic with the booster boxes and prerelease. I hope that they will move to paper packs instead of plastic!

I think making the art cards numbered and actually signed wud add another chase to opening packs..kind of like the list. So your not just throwing that out w the wrapper. I like the neon cards..but I think they got a little scared of it for streets... They shud have doubled down made an " Elspeth blood money" border card 1 in 60 master cases or something idk
I think Wizards is doing really well at catering to different parts of their customer base at the same time. They have the powerful, fun, and desirable sets for players, beautiful and rare card variants for the collectors, and great precons and challenger decks for people wanting to get into the game.

Yeah the whole "damage on the stack" rule really made Morphling a horrible card to play against ....ahhhh good times...

I’ve been waiting for this one. I recently got a Gaea’s Cradle for one of my favorite commander decks (Yisan, The Wanderer Bard) and once I heard you were opening the Urza block I wanted to see if you could pull another Cradle.
I had an all foil elf deck, with 4 foil Gaia's cradles, and used to have a few other non foil cradles. Ton of duel lands. I remember getting 2 dollar packs of urzas at card shows the guy would hook it up. I was only 13 I think, stopped playing my first year of high school unfortunately and sold all my cards online for like 500 dollars total in 2000. Man I never imagined that my collection would probably be worth like 50k or so nowadays
4 or so foil masticores. Foil powder legs, dust bowls all of it. Man so sad wish I had some cards just for the beauty and some to sell

WOTC did a great job with Neon dynasty, it's the set that really got me into playing magic as a new hobby and checking out my LGS and i'm loving the experience

These videos really help lower the temptation to open all the packs I have stashed away. Sure you might get lucky, but the vast majority of the time it's a one-way ticket to hosetown

Set boosters are great, but those serials we need them even if only in collectors packs
One thing wizards is doing right, is making cards more available, not just as a product but singles in the sense where they are a lot more affordable due to all the variants even though that can get exhausting.
My favorite thing is this newest set, new capenna. Its the first set in a long time where i just can’t help myself in wanting to buy more of it even though i have everything i want from it.
The set boosters in this set have been spiked with goodies. I pulled 3 mythics yesterday in a set booster which were twilight prophet (list) perrie (commander), and ziatora (regular art) i popped so much. I already told myself not to buy more but i dont see that holding. Ill probably donate the cards i pull to my friends if i do lol.
Lastly the foils from new capenna except for the foil lands in the set booster bundle look much better than past sets. The foiling looks darker imo which i like because it makes the card pop more, especially on green and blue cards.

I think one thing wizards is doing right now is chase cards. It keeps people opening the product and fills the market with singles instead of people hoarding sealed boxes

i love what WOTC did with multicolor with New Cappena. even if people didnt enjoy the theme, I found it really fun to play at my LGS. The mana fixing was AWESOME.

WOTC has done a whole heap load of new things in this past year, but if I had to narrow it to one each, here it is:
Pro: The collector booster boxes are my favorite new addition to magic as long as pull rates remain favoring the older sets (Opening will no longer be fun if the pull rates increase as they did in Streets of New Capenna).
Con: I am all for the changes that WOTC has been throwing at the community, but maybe we could slow it down a bit. The changes have been coming at us a bit fast to keep up with, but other than that, the change seems pretty good so far.
Also, CONGRATS DAVE!!!!!! So deserved!!!
I wish they'd permanently go back to the old card frame. So much cooler looking than the modern

Great video! One thing that WotC is doing right is they are pumping out the product. Some people don't like the amount of product hitting the stores and wallet fatigue is a real thing, but I can't stand it when a game goes stale because of the long down period between releases. I have seen many games die out because of the lack of new product. I say keep pumping product WotC. I can choose what products I can afford.
YES the smell!!! Every time I open new cards I smell them and their just not the same.
I think WotC is doing a good job with the overall story of the lash few sets. They are giving us clues for, I think, a Phyrexia themed set in the very near future! My first card that I got when I was young was a Phyrexian Negator, so Phyrexia always has a soft spot in my heart! Seeing those preators "invading" new planes is pretty interesting! We’ll know more in the Brothers Wars, for sure!

I really like that wizards is bringing back the competitive aspects of magic with all the new improvements to arena and events at LGS’s. Even tho I’m prolly not going to be pro touring anytime soon! It’s nice to see they are taking better care of the hardcore players, who devote a lot of time to magic 😎 also they have been making some banger sets, let’s be honest lol.

So fun diving in childhood memories! I like how the list have been revised to make web cards more available for broader player mass. Better having a tutor and choosing not to use it then having none in envy for it.
"Bravado" was my favorite card from this set. such a power common for wide decks.
It hurts to see how the value of some of these cards dropped. I remember how insanely proud I was when I had two(!) Serra Avatars back then. I traded so much for these. They were around 30$ back then and same with Stroke of Genius.. But I think it hurts more to see the prices that went up lol.. I wish I kept my collection or at least the gems like the mox diamonds and cradles etc...thanks for this great nostalgia trip!

I remember back in '99 I played a silly green stompy deck at a tournament with 4 crop rotations and 4 cradles :D those weren't mine though. luckily now I have one that I got when it was like 30 bucks.

WotC has certainly gotten into a groove with the rarity of certain cards. My only complaint is the sheer amount of product that gets pumped out. SICK Cradle btw!!!

The thing I feel wizards has been doing right about lately is that they have been trying to cut down on plastic with the booster boxes and prerelease. I hope that they will move to paper packs instead of plastic!

I think making the art cards numbered and actually signed wud add another chase to opening packs..kind of like the list. So your not just throwing that out w the wrapper. I like the neon cards..but I think they got a little scared of it for streets... They shud have doubled down made an " Elspeth blood money" border card 1 in 60 master cases or something idk
Wotc saved my life fr I’m obsessed with Mtg and it really pulled me out of a dark space. I’m brand new to the game.
I think Wizards is doing really well at catering to different parts of their customer base at the same time. They have the powerful, fun, and desirable sets for players, beautiful and rare card variants for the collectors, and great precons and challenger decks for people wanting to get into the game.
