So I have this monitor now and I was nervous based on your review. Just make sure you disable the Smart Energy Mode and its totally ok on brightness. I had it enabled and its totally unusable until this feature is turned off. The speed and response time outweigh the brightness issue(for me at least). @@TillTheLightTakesUs How so??? Maybe I could’ve worded it different but I’m sure people get the point I was trying to make 🤦🏾🤷🏾 Why is it that people online always gotta say some slick shit??? You could’ve just said I disagree & kept it pushing 🤦🏾🤷🏾
Nope. Its because the majority of PC use is done in a lit room. When watching a movie or tv show most people are watching in the dark. A monitor is used in a different environment. I can almost gurantee you that they will eventually offer a glossy finish. Every single review i have watched has at least mentioned it, its really the only thing everybody agrees on is that there should be a glossy one too. It will come, and when it does i will buy it
@absolutelysobeast I really don't think that's it. Phones are used in the brightest environments of any devices and they use glossy. Quality glossy is just simply better.
weird, my 27gr95qe was actually too bright for me even with all the lights on, I actually reduced it to 75 brightness! HDR is almost blinding bright for me sometimes.
Usb type c. Is really nice for people like me that have a work laptop that they can hook up to the monitor which can also charge at the same time and daisy chain to another monitor. Making the whole setup pretty clean on a Homeoffice desk.
Finally someone honest about OLED burn-in. It's not a matter of "if" an OLED will burn in, it's a matter of "when" it will happen, even though some people claim otherwise.
I was never getting this display as it's too rich for my blood but I do appreciate how you touched on the cost of ownership, especially with this type of monitor technology.
if you play wow or cs you don't need nor want this monitor, it's point is to have the best darkness available most of those games aren't games you play for 24h straight and even forza horizon 5 like shown here you open menus all the time which refreshes the screen, I watch game stream on my oled tv all the time even static games like hearthstone, just change channel/picture switch to desktop open a menu or whatever every 30min-1hr or less and you're good to go the only thing mandatory on pc i would say is forget desktop icons, have a rotating desktop wallpaper app and auto-hide the taskbar those are the real dangers we have very old monitors at work TNs and even they burn taskbar and icons when they are on 24/24 for 10+ years
He's right. I just got this monitor in. Brightness levels are really low. White backgrounds do not have good clarity due to the anti-glare coating. Color fringing is a problem but can be fixed with Better ClearText software which can be downloaded. Gaming on this monitor is good. Really responsive. As he explained. Gaming on it is almost telepathic-like. Feels like an extension of your body. Is it $1000 worth? No. More like $700-800
Make sure you turn off the power saving mode in the menus. Smart energy or energy saving or something like that. If its still too dim, its just a personal preference at that point
Regarding OLED burn-in, it's not really a concern if you reserve the OLED display for movies/games and avoid any sort of productivity work on it. That doesn't mean that burn-in is prevented, rather that it's massively slowed down and when it does happen, it'll have taken such a long time that you might have already upgraded to something newer. At the end of the day, I bought my OLED TV to enjoy it, not to preserve it for a possible next owner. It is not an investment. It started losing value the moment I cut open the tape on the box. In ten years, whether it has burn-in or not, it'll be worth almost nothing just because of its age. I don't stress myself out with precautions (apart from not using it as a productivity monitor). I just sit back and enjoy the experience.
I game in low light and play many fps games and this monitor is insane for that. For me this is great compared to zowie 2546k imo. I guess it just depends what you upgrade from.
@@beatlourd6578 I prefer LG. Zowie was brighter in sdr and dyac made motion very clear at 100hz - up though it had its gimmicks and no perfect setting for it. Also a TN panel 1080p. LG: Overall picture quality is just better it is a higher resolution you can see more details. Brightness is alright in hdr. Bright enough to see everything. If windows 11 didn't have great hdr options I would have returned LG. My last BF 2042 match I got 82 kills and 10 deaths while playing on the LG oled.
Yes I feel like that’s such an important point a lot of reviewers don’t cover. For them, they’re so used to testing out many great monitors but for the adverse person upgrading from a couple years old monitor, it’ll be a big upgrade.
You're tripping if you think you're not going to notice the difference from OLED to ips in image clarity. Went from 240hz ips 1440p to 165hz oled 1440p and the pixel response is noticeable right away. OLED at default is on par with ips with ulmb enabled easily.
The frigging he is referring to you won't even notice unless you really look for it. The brightness is perfectly fine if you turn off the power engery saver setting. I haven't tried this yet in light situation, but in dark to semi dark, you won't even notice there is a matte finish or brightness is low. Actually, it is more of a glossy matte finish and also at time I have to lower the brightness by 5 to 10 percent. I feel like every reviewer trying to be the first doesn't even look or understand the complete feature of this panel.
Great explanation on the value of OLED. It snapped me back to reality because I fell in love the moment I saw this monitor and I considered on getting it but now I’ll stick with my IPS monitor instead
@@rarinth 100%. I sit in front of a LG C2 and I’m watching my own reflection more than I’m watching what’s on screen. They’re just parroting what other people say. Pc monitors need some sort of anti glare coating
@@ronniekregar3482 I used to think this… then I got the AW3423DWF… The gloss definitely helps with image clarity. My games pop so much more now, and the way it is made has glare being minimal in my use case. No issues even in the darkest of scenes. Definitely not just “parroting”. Some of us have real world experience with this specific thing.
I watch this review before I preordered and I wish I took your criticism a little more seriously because now that I’ve got the monitors on my hands for a few days, I can definitely notice all the flaws you mentioned. That matte coating is horrible and text fringing is very apparent and I will be returning this monitor because I wanted this monitor to be the end game for mixed uses but man am I’m disappointed. the same guy that said for so many fake HDR 400 monitors like the Dell S3422DWG that they have good hdr and in this monitor that is oled he said its meh......funny
To hear the blacks aren’t as dark and the contrast isn’t as high is actually good to hear for gaming. A lot of games have dark areas (dungeons and night time) and my experience of oled is that it makes dark areas completely blacked out with too much contrast.
Awesome honest review. I can't believe I'm choosing a monitor for a couple of weeks now and I didn't see your channel yet! Please tell more about productivity aspects and mac compatibility in future videos. Cheers! ❤
I have my IPS screen at 6% (100 nits) and HDR is of course locked out but always felt my current monitor is too bright for my use. Yes it’s Mini-LED. Only concern is the matte finish if it’s really that bad.
Thanks for the honest review. I was looking at my Sony Inzone M9 that I snagged on sale and wondering if I should return it and go for the LG, but I think I'm going to wait for the next generation. I want to enjoy a monitor without having to baby it so much and dreading the day I look at it and see burn in. Thanks!!!!
How does the PG27AQN matte coating compare to this monitor? I’m considering waiting until Asus’ version of a 27” OLED monitor comes out if they have a better track record in this regard.
Burn in is overblown..I have a 18 year old plasma screen that just started to get some slight burn in and screen retention. Samsung phones have been OLED for over a decade. I have an S7 that prolly has a million hours on it and never got burn in.
Damn, what a savage review lol. Glad we have a take like this though and you aren't fawning over it just because it's 27" OLED. If you want to be an early adopter, you're gonna pay the price. I owned the AW3423DW before I lost it in a house fire, and while I really loved the 21:9 aspect ratio, perfect contrast and HDR that was better than my LG CX TV, I just couldn't really get over having that thought in the back of my head about burn-in, and having to run the pixel refresh every 4 hours or so. Now that I'm back to using a bog-standard IPS panel, it's sooooo nice being able to just leave my monitor on for an hour on a static screen without a care in the world. OLED can be really nice, but I ultimately think that it's not really the 'future' of panel technologies unless they can fix the burn-in issue (and Microsoft can work in a way to deal with abnormal RGB layouts). IPS/VA panels with high zone count local dimming and better SDR/HDR brightness seems to be the best way moving forward when it comes to computer/gaming monitors.
but since i think its worth mentioning, this monitor not only that it has issues as u said but ive experienced the gsync/freesync implementation is terrible. the screen always flicker with it on even in games and loading screens and since this panel upscales to 4k 120hz some games the monitor would just lock to that resolution and the only way to go back to 1440p 240hz u will need to make the game borderless windowed. some games that do this at least for me is witcher 3 and star wars battlefront 2.
Thank you for this review. I was considering selling my LG Ultrawide to get this OLED. After this review though, I think I will stick with the monitor I currently have.
Thank you for this honestly Review !! I ordered the AW2723DF yesterday ! I prefer OLEDs for movies in the living room But Not for gaming. Sry for my english :D Best Wishes from Germany
OLEDs will eventually burn in. It depends on what you are using for that 8 hours a day. If its playing the same exact game with a static HUD, within 1 year you will probably already have burn in. If you use it on the desktop for all of that 8 hours, your task bar will almost certainly burn in within 18 months maybe even half of that. If you vary what you are doing and mix up your content, and you baby the screen you should get a few years out of it. Some manufacturers (alienware) have offered a 3 year burn in warranty. That should give you an idea. Edit: Also 8 hours a day is alot more than the average OLED user uses their screen
@@absolutelysobeast do you know if asus have a similar burn in warranty? The pg27aqdm 240hz OLED or pg27aqn? Will use it for gaming 90% of the time and maybe Netflix, YT or just browsing sometimes too
I’m bummed about all the issues with this monitor, but I’ll prob still end up getting it. I’m tired of gaming on LED. It will probably take YEARS for us to get a 27” non glossy OLED.
I just bought the monitor and brightness is a non issue. If you’re playing games in a room with direct sunlight or with studio lighting (like in this review lol), yeah it’s gonna be dim. The text fringing on the other hand…
I am gonna buy XL2566K. I want best motion clarity. I play FPS only. I understand others want newest technology, but I want bright monitor that can handle motion really good. Type-C guy. Did you test this monitor on the conditions that user will used?. I have an oled lg tv since 2017 it was one of the first oled tvs. It has been amazing and deep blacks are so good. Playing Stray the other day with the kid make me feel the appreciation of the oled tv. I just wonder if you used in a way you are not supposed to used for example with your led lights on the back on and your film lights on front of it. Yes I move the TV once because when direct sun light hit it is hard to see it. Now the sunlight never hit it and the image is so good. Not fan of the remote that is the first thing is going to get lost with my four year old around me.
Based on the review. I cancel my oled monitor and I got the alienware 2723df. I loved it. Up to 280 hz is amazing plus other perks. Yes it is not an oled but it does not cost 1k and it is bright.
Thank you for taking the time to make this review! However, I'm curious to know why do you recommend the ASUS PG27AQN over this oled panel when you say that you haven't reviewed it???
i bought 3423dwf after few hours playing with lg, it got some firmware problem that my games only run at 120 hz, but only when i run games, web browsing etc all run at 240hz but i just cant tolerate a $1000 monitor being defective, and yes it is pretty dim, im using 3423dwf right now and i m telling you that it is much brighter even with only 75% brightness vs 100% brightness lg monitor , plus they are the same price now
I’ve been thinking about picking this up and came across this video. This isn’t a review about the monitor. It’s a review about the brightness and why not to get it. 95% negative and 5% positive. Too biased for me to take into consideration on my purchase. “Again, because of that brightness”
So no major noticeable motion blur improvements over say a good 1440p IPS? I have a PG279Q and still haven't found an upgrade to pull the trigger on. The Alienware seems great just still not sold on ultrawide.
I was torn between this LG and the Alienware 3423dw/dwf to upgrade from my lg 1440p nano ips 165hz panel. Well I went with the Alienware and have had it the past 2 weeks………it blow me away everytime I use it! The 21:9 aspect ratio makes gaming soooo immersive and so much better then 16:9, but this being OLED when I do view 16:9 content the black bars on the side completely disappear and o don’t even notice then because there is not any distracting glow letting me know the monitor is there, just complete blackness looking like nothing is there but a 16:9 screen. I highly recommend the Alienware as the motion clarity on it is worlds better then my old IPS 165hz.
@@storage-space4927 thanks for the in depth reply. What was the model on the LG if you don't mind? I am close to finally pulling the trigger since the LG OLED seems to have more downsides.
I went from an agon 165hz IPS panel and it is smoother. If you are already on a high refresh rate the motion clarity is definitely better, but I wouldn't say drastically unless you are coming from 60hz. What is very noticeably better is the responsiveness, even in third person games. Color contrast and blacks are also obviously much better than an IPS. It definitely is not super bright, and the matte is noticeable in some situations (though I think it's pretty overstated how noticeable it is in this video). Compared to my c9 tv, yes it's not as good in pure image quality. The biggest issue I ran into besides some general setting adjustments was a problem where it would default to 4k 120hz mode on certain games I had played on the tv before, regardless of in game settings. I was able to fix this with a clean driver install but still need to test some things, that would be the reason I return it if they persist. It's not a perfect monitor, but if you have been waiting on an oled equivalent in the 1440p space like I was, it's good.
Some heavy matte screens look like a speckly sandpapered look on white areas but you talking about oily vaseline looking whites makes no sense to me. Care to explain the diff ?
His review sounds like it's been paid by Alienware or Samsung, lol. I have the monitor, and I haven't seen any of the issues he is talking about besides text frigging and even that only noticeable when the text was small, and I really looked for it. Otherwise, you won't notice. The glossy matte (not oily) finish is not a problem either, I tried a black background and a white background to test and played bf 2042 like he was to notice and didn't see an issue at all.
@@3meir his review has the power engery saver thing on. The brightness he is showing is not true brightness. I turned off the power energy saver, and the brightness at times feels too much depending on the content you are looking at.
@Joe Yabuki that makes sense. For me, the perfect spot is 1440p, and at 27 inches, 1440p looks really sharp. You would have to zoom in to even tell the difference.
I was waiting for an OLED this size to fit my desk. But it's dim, has fringing and a sub-optimal matte finish. For me it's a no-go. Especially at this price point.
Hey man! I preordered this monitor and planned to use it for gaming and school. I’ll use windows for gaming but if I plug my mac into it for school should the text clarity be okay? Just to confirm: the subpixel layout is only a problem on windows?
For most people, especially those w monitors that are a few years old now, this monitor is a huge upgrade in every metric. But this monitor is definitely not the end game monitor a lot expected. Maybe Samsung will get it right with their QD tech.
@@eddi3401 its not even the brightness aspect but the coating. LG has great glossy finishes on their TVs and for some reason they had to gimp this panel with awful matte finish.

So I have this monitor now and I was nervous based on your review. Just make sure you disable the Smart Energy Mode and its totally ok on brightness. I had it enabled and its totally unusable until this feature is turned off. The speed and response time outweigh the brightness issue(for me at least). I am loving it for FPS games and content looks great too!
Thanks, glad to hear. He seems to really focus on stuff that doesn't matter (OMG RGB SO GOOD!) and glosses over things that this does amazingly (0.03ms response).
i preorder this monitor and its coming this tuesday, and the first thing that i wanna do is turn off that smart energy mode. also its true that some people wanted that 0.03 response time and the OLED tech is just a bonus for me.
Smart Energy Mode ... had the same thought! It has Micro Lens Array (MLA / Meta technology), should be realy bright, i guess. Are you using it for texting aswell? Type-C Tech mentions a Prblem with text at 01:00. What is your experience? greetings :-)

I think they don’t make these monitors with a glossy finish is because they don’t want their monitors competing with their OLED tv’s

What mode do you use/like most?
Literally people using OLEDs for 5 years+ at this point with zero burn in.
I was never getting this display as it's too rich for my blood but I do appreciate how you touched on the cost of ownership, especially with this type of monitor technology.
I'm on LG160hzto180hz IPS right now, thanks for the review TYPE C TECH
Very honest review regarding OLED burning issue! Thank you so much for your review and sharing information of your experience.
if you play wow or cs you don't need nor want this monitor, it's point is to have the best darkness available most of those games aren't games you play for 24h straight and even forza horizon 5 like shown here you open menus all the time which refreshes the screen, I watch game stream on my oled tv all the time even static games like hearthstone, just change channel/picture switch to desktop open a menu or whatever every 30min-1hr or less and you're good to go the only thing mandatory on pc i would say is forget desktop icons, have a rotating desktop wallpaper app and auto-hide the taskbar those are the real dangers we have very old monitors at work TNs and even they burn taskbar and icons when they are on 24/24 for 10+ years
No. More like $700-800
The extra money is tax for new tech.
Does the clear text actually fix fringing tho?
@@iKayorei A little bit. Used the grayscale option in the Better Clear Text software which helped but It only works in the OS.

Make sure you turn off the power saving mode in the menus. Smart energy or energy saving or something like that. If its still too dim, its just a personal preference at that point
Great review! Important stuff you cover here, thanks a lot.
The sub pixel text is a huge deal breaker for me. Thanks for explaining this.
I guess a 4K resolution on a 27" size monitor would make text great again 😆
My god why did u not test it in win 11?
Any windows sucks ass. Uninstall immediately
Nice review. Hope to see some of these in the future. ktc m27p20, innocn 27m2v, cooler master gp27u maybe even sony m9
I game in low light and play many fps games and this monitor is insane for that. For me this is great compared to zowie 2546k imo. I guess it just depends what you upgrade from.
what about flicker tho?
@@0wyn ? I havent seen any.
Fraggin you prefer the Zowie or the OLED 240 hz ?
I'm getting the aw2723df - thanks for this information.
A dream monitor for a gamer at this moment, gets a hard pass due to matte finish. Well done LG.
Just go with LG C2 42". Same price.
If I had a dollar for every time he said “no go”, I would have like $72
Huge let down. Hopefully other manufacturers are taking notes and will produce a glossy 240hz OLED with a heatsink for better brightness capability.

A lot of games have dark areas (dungeons and night time) and my experience of oled is that it makes dark areas completely blacked out with too much contrast.

you can use your lg magic remote to control the monitor as well

Did you have energy saver off, vivid mode on, increase digital vibrance in NCP? All things that made this monitor good for me
IPS is nice but the blacks being more gray are kind of annoying, looking forward to jumping to one of the OLED panels down the road.

I have the DW and, I hope, I get the fattest burn-in ever. Then, one day before warranty ends, I call Dell.

but since i think its worth mentioning, this monitor not only that it has issues as u said but ive experienced the gsync/freesync implementation is terrible. the screen always flicker with it on even in games and loading screens and since this panel upscales to 4k 120hz some games the monitor would just lock to that resolution and the only way to go back to 1440p 240hz u will need to make the game borderless windowed. some games that do this at least for me is witcher 3 and star wars battlefront 2.

Would be Amazing if you make a Review of the Asus PG27AQN 1440p 360Hz Monitor :)
How worried should I be about burn in?
& approximately how long should this OLED monitor last me for let’s say 8 hours a day?

Wonder if that might be the issue, yes probably alienware qd oled is a better buy just thinking about the size and no matte coat but this lg has options like hdmi 2.1 for ps 5 users which I am very attracted. Not fan of the remote that is the first thing is going to get lost with my four year old around me.

I’ve been thinking about picking this up and came across this video. This isn’t a review about the monitor. It’s a review about the brightness and why not to get it. 95% negative and 5% positive. Too biased for me to take into consideration on my purchase. “Again, because of that brightness”
you did not hold back here. talked me out of it. I've seen the LG c2 tv in shops - is so easy on the eyes. what's your oled pick?
How does this compare to a 4k monitor in terms of picture quality?
