  • Driving my 2016 VW Golf R DSG in several different situations, i show how Adaptive Cruise Control behaves including when driving on a country road, entering a dual carriage way off a slip road and then in a busy town.

    The acc is one of the reasons i ordered a golf with dsg and i have seen a few videos of it in use. it should move off once you press the resume . this the first vid i seen from a standstill and the dealer did say it would do it with the dsg. as right now i have a citroen c4 grand Picasso and that has a great function where you can press memory and speed signs appear on the touchscreen display that you can select or edit. but cruise control needs to be on and be in 4th gear for it to work. but is very handy.

    Jay I believe you can also press resume on the steering wheel/stalk wherever it is as well as the throttle pedal to resume.

    @Jay Kay We recently got the Golf MK7 2018 model. I have used ACC a couple of times testing it and it works very well. I only use it on motorways etc... Just wanted to ask you a quick question. When it comes to slowing down the car if there is a vehicle detected and it only needs to slow down a few miles per hour. Does it use the actual brakes to slow you down? Or is it using engine braking? Also when it does slow down a little do the rear brake lights come on?

      TazmanKRS same question here. I also wonder how well it works at night.

    I think the reason it stops could be the auto handbrake being switched on

    I've been using exactly as you have town driving in gte automatic and also in manual in a Passat. it lets u clutch up and down gears but when you accelerate or brake it disengages. Sometimes do if u accelerate past set speed it disengages but when u come off the gas maintains last speed stored but not set distance between you and car in front very dangerous if you think car will brake for you

    • @jaykay7932
      @jaykay7932  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      so in that situation the car doesnt brake??

    • @bruts82
      @bruts82 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jay Kay it won't brake. If your doing 100kph on Acc with distance set to car in front and then decide to overtake it and do say 140kph and then come off accelerator it will go back to 100kph and maintain but distance set will be gone you ll notice the screen will darken when u accelerate but speed will be stored

      Thanks for your contribution mate. That's scary shit and is dangerous! Even more dangerous if front assist is disabled which a lot of people do I think

    Main issue I have with ACC and I guess I'm probably asking too much of it. If your on a slight bend in the road and the car you were behind is turning off right (or a slow moving vehicle on the hard shoulder like a tractor) it brakes you practically to a standstill unless you override it. The system does not have the A.I. to realise the road is clear in front of you.

    • @jaykay7932
      @jaykay7932  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree with you, something similar happened whilst filming this video, I was approaching a set of lights turining from red to green but the car in front had started turning off into the right turn lane. It was clear for me to proceed but the car broke quite aggressively then carried on. As you say the radar should tell the ai that the lane ahead is clear. Perhaps that works more efficiently with lane assist??

    • @ssadonnelly
      @ssadonnelly 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Alas it doesn't my Tiguan has lane assist too. Lane assist I guess is good if you get distracted playing with all the systems LOL. But it scares the crap out of you when suddenly charging lanes and gives that kick to the steering wheel especially if the road is icy! :)

    • @jaykay7932
      @jaykay7932  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thats a shame and i can imagine that being scary! I'll bet its a problem they have fixed in the latest version of the system coming out in the face lift. Be interesting to find out!

    you don't have to tap the accelerator every time to move off.
    Just press the resume button.

    • @jaykay7932
      @jaykay7932  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I assumed that was the case. All they need to do is get the road sign and traffic light feature working and then acc should be able to cope with a lot of city driving with the obvious except of junctions

    Hi
    Golf R Estate coming in March. As it takes so long to go through all the hoops of online insurance quotes have you or anyone else an insurance company to recommend. We are married couple of 69 with 9+ yrs no claims. Thanks for your help

    • @jaykay7932
      @jaykay7932  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ive heard saga is quite a good company to insure with. I believe they only sell premiums to older clients so I'd say you'd get a great insurance product for a great price. For example I think they offer new for old upto 3 years old, where as my insurance only do that for the first 6 months. This is why gap insurance is popular

  • @amorbavian

    When I was testing this I'm sure the car continued even after full stop in city traffic. Now, I have to lightly press the gas before it resumes the ACC after full stop. Do you know why it does that?

    • @jaykay7932
      @jaykay7932  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      im not sure. As i say i thought that sometimes if my R came to a stop, then the car in front moved, my car began moving again too. But i observed while filming this video that the R crawls for a short period before stopping. If the car infront pulls away while my R is crawling or has literally just stopped, then my R moves foward again on its own

    • @_Mario_PL_
      @_Mario_PL_ 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jay Kay I think it will move again only after it has stopped for less than 3 seconds.

    ACC is not advisable in urban traffic. I tried it in a queue of traffic and when it encountered the back of a bus protruding from a bus bay it braked hard even though I was going to clear the bus by several feet without having to steer around it. I was lucky the car behind wasn't closer!

    • @jaykay7932
      @jaykay7932  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's interesting you got that problem mate. Are you keeping the radar sensor clean?? I use it all the time in heavy traffic as that is it's purpose. My retailer sold me the idea of driving to work on a Monday morning after a hard weekend, you're sipping a coffee in rush hour stop start traffic, and acc takes care of everything for you

      My dealer advised only using it on the open road, not in TOWN driving. It is not fool-proof. Now I see why! Also see this from

      Again I've not had that problem. If you watch my latest video I use acc all the time when going up and down the a1(m) motorway. If a car over takes me then turns off into a slip road then starts braking to slow down (which happens all the time) I've not had the acc kick in and brake violently for me. Also when a car comes off the slip road squeezing into the gap between me and the car I front, the car icon shows for me and then my car drops back but doesn't brake violently. I think the only time I don't use acc now is when I know there is a round about on the stretch of road I'm on or a junction

    • @jaykay7932
      @jaykay7932  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I suppose that's not to say it won't happen though. Ultimately don't drive around sleeping 😊 At the end of the day we are the actual drivers of these cars no matter how good their driver assist programs are

    • @robertgeorge9004
      @robertgeorge9004 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jay Kay. Exactly. This technology is all very well, but a Tesla on autopilot was involved in a crash recently when it was faced with something the tech didn't understand, and the driver wasn't paying full attention.

    any plans to trade in for a mk7.5 or mk8 in the future?

    • @jaykay7932
      @jaykay7932  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      No mate, its a good question on what would you repalce a golf R with... If i were a millionaire id replace it with a Ferrari FF. I quite like the idea of jumping from 4 cylinders to 12 while remaining in a AWD hatchback! But realistcally i think id go for a BMW after this, probably either the V8 M3 or a used M2

    • @marcbedingfield1934
      @marcbedingfield1934 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      not a big fan of the ff although I do like ferrari. I am currently speaking to my local vw dealer as to when the mk7.5 R will be available for order, looks as though it will be summer order for an autumn delivery

    • @jaykay7932
      @jaykay7932  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds interesting. Are demontrators in yet? I'll test drive one for sure just so i can play with the latest infotainment system

    • @marcbedingfield1934
      @marcbedingfield1934 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      no demos yet. to be honest they don't seem to be certain on any dates yet. I thought that as they have stopped building the R to order and you can only buy from stock, the new face lift model would be available quite soon but it's looking like it's 8 or 9 months away. the main feature on the interior I am looking forward to is the virtual cockpit, I know it's probably just a tweeted version of the audi system but I think it will be a good upgrade over the current dials

    • @jaykay7932
      @jaykay7932  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      yes i think that looks cool too. I also love the sound of the short cut buttons of the infotainment system being placed as glass icons in the screen.
