    As a non-boating angler... I use a 5 gal bucket with holes drilled in it on a rope rather than a stringer, I keep my fish alive until I gut them then they go on ice. If I'm fishing locally, I just keep them alive all the way home and gut them there.
    EDIT:
    WARNING: This may not be legal in your area. It's always a good idea to check the local laws where your fishing as the laws varry from place to place and something your used to may not be acceptable if angling outside of your local area. This I thought wise to add in light of replies.

      This might work in the area of the country that you live in, but here in British Columbia we are not allowed to have live fish in our possession. We must dispatch the fish we intended to keep and keeping them on ice is the best way to keep them fresh until we get home.

      @@FougereFamilyAdventures thank you, I edited my comment to mention that it's advisable to check the local laws where one plans to fish.

    Thank you for uploading. I just had a very frustrating day of fishing where my stringer was consumed by turtles. Back to Walmart for some ice packs!!!

      Oh wow! I've never heard of that. Yikes! Ice and a cooler should help that problem.

      @@FougereFamilyAdventures I was very confused about how to feel for the day. When I pulled up the stringer, a large snapper about the size of my chest was attached - I thought it was a log until the claws came out of the water. In hindsight it was amazing. I'm about to start kayak fishing and I'm thinking about trying a soft cooler like one of those hot/cold bags at Walmart. Thank you so much for the inspiration!!

      @FougereFamilyAdventures  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Soft coolers work too. They make soft cooler fish bags and I've heard they work really well keeping your fish cold. My only concern with a soft cooler has been if they clean well. Maybe one day I'll try one to see what I think.

    I’ve always used those styrofoam coolers that those meat gift package things come in since they would be thrown out anyway

    • @FougereFamilyAdventures
      @FougereFamilyAdventures  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      We have had our cooler for years now. It doesn't take much to wash it after each trip to keep it fresh and ready for the next outing. Those meat coolers can be recycled too. ♻️

    I'm new to fishing. Bank fishing. I thought you are supposed to clean them immediately and then put them in the cooler

    • @FougereFamilyAdventures
      @FougereFamilyAdventures  4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Yes. Cleaning your fish immediately and putting them on ice is the best way to keep them as fresh as you can. Don't forget to bleed them out as well.
      We usually bleed our fish out, then throw them on ice. I prefer to gut mine on shore at this time.

    Hey Fougere this vid was just what i was searching for because im going to be owning a soft pack cooler , i also love catching and eating fish and sometimes when i catch my fish i love to imedaitely keep them in the cooler untill dinner time or leave them in fridge over night sometimes not knowing if or when im going to be catching more.if im on the boat fishing then i love to keep the fish in the cooler untl i get home or untill dinner time. i have a couple questions about the ice pack you were using , 1.what kind of ice packs are those and how much did they cost??? 2.how long do they remain cold or frozen???

    • @FougereFamilyAdventures
      @FougereFamilyAdventures  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The ice packs I was using were from Canadian Tire. They are your everyday ice packs for a cooler of food.
      They last long enough for a quick day trip. If going longer, I'd recommend ice cubes. They cool your fish down quickly and keep it cold.

    do you have to gut and clean the fish before storing them like this or can you just toss those suckers in? do you have to knock the fish out?

    • @FougereFamilyAdventures
      @FougereFamilyAdventures  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It is recommended you bleed, and gut them, but I normally just put them in the cooler and the meat quality stays great. If you had to do one thing, I would bleed them and gut them later. And, yes, you need to dispatch then before they go in the cooler.

      @@johnnyrotten3116 no. I do not cook them with the guts in. When they go into the cooler they stay there until I get home. Then, I gut them (clean them). Sometimes I even fillet them and freeze them for later. We do cook them whole in the oven as well (without the guts).

    How do you go about packaging your fish filets for the freezer? Do you pack them in a saltwater solution?

    • @FougereFamilyAdventures
      @FougereFamilyAdventures  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      My freezer packaging depends on my plans on what will be done with the kokanee I keep. If I am smoking the fish soon after I catch them, I use large zip lock bags to store either whole fish or filleted fish. If I plan on keeping them in the freezer for a longer period of time, I will vacuum seal them. I haven't tried freezing them in water or saltwater solution because we normally consume them well before they start to freezer burn.

  • @Smarglenargle
    @Smarglenargle ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Do you just toss em in after you bonk them on the head or do we need to do the bleeding thing?

    • @FougereFamilyAdventures
      @FougereFamilyAdventures  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Personally, I just put them in my cooler, but I've heard bleeding them and gutting them is better. That being said, I usually clean them shortly after I keep them.

  • @bradfarrahgerwing154
    @bradfarrahgerwing154 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I keep a rectangular mop bucket in the back of the boat and a good heavy soft fish cooler. When i catch a kokanee i rip a gill immediately then bonk leaving it to bleed in the bucket half full of water. After 3 to 5 minutes it goes in the cooler that i put a frozen water bottle and a couple handfuls of ice.
    It really makes a huge difference with the warm topwater as mentioned ruining your fish. Dragging fish in warm water is equivalent to hunters that dont open and bleed their deer just tie it whole to the hot as hell hood of the car then park at the pub for a few hours to show off before butchering it that night drunk and unhygienically then sloppily bagged and frozen....yuck
    Is there any wonder some people dont like deer meat because what they have been served is rancid and gamey
