    FYI: This fish WAS dispatched with a blunt force to the head. ALWAYS bonk the fish before bleeding it!! Keep in mind even after you kill a fish, the fish tends to still move around with its nerves. See these videos below on ways to help you kill your fish.

    Thank you for a great video. I have just purchased an IKEJIMA spike to humanely dispatch my fish. Fishing for trout always reminds me the fishing trip I took my then young son out on. He was all of FIVE years old. We had been fishing for Brown or Rainbow trout for almost a week and not catching anything. Eventually; my son said "I am going to try Spaghetti dad" and twirled a strand onto his hook. Strike me pink; he cast it into the water and came up with a Rainbow Trout. This five year old kid said: "MMMM Must have been an Italian fish dad!" That was forty five years ago, and that lad is now almost 50 years of age. That night, he would not surrender his trout and I found it under his pillow. We still have a hoot whenever hsi fishing trips come up. Thanks you kindly for a great post.

    On a trout, you're wasting meat if you filet them that way. Just cut off the head, coat them in flour/salt/pepper and fry them. The meat peels away from the backbone and ribs on both sides, and you're left with many bites of delicate, delicious trout.

    I've always killed the fish right away and put them on the stringer, never had fishy tasting trout. I've read that lactic acid builds up due to stress causing the fishy flavor. You see lots of guys putting live fish on the stringer and letting them die slow, causing fishy tasting fish.

      That's the way I do it too! Good to dispatch right away, then bleed immediately after since they will still pump out blood for a little bit right after bonking. Non cruel and best tasty imo.

    I've been teaching my nephews how to kill, bleed, and gut any fish we keep ever since they were 6,7,8 years old. Now whenever we keep any fish(usually trout) they know exactly what to do. I think it's important to teach the younger generation these things instead of having em stay home and sit behind a computer or TV all day. Get em out there, have fun, and most importantly make lots of great memories!

    Nice video, good to spread the word! Bleeding fish helps reduce the spoilage rate, but most of us have a cooler, fridge or freezer handy😎 One more thing, it helps with is the appearance of the fillets, you get a nice even colored fillet and after it’s cooked you don’t get the dark hair like capillaries that is most noticeable on trout and other white colored flesh.

    I prefer to dispatch my fish by putting my knife into their head just behind their eyes. When it comes to bleeding them, immediately after dispatch I will use my fingers to pull out their gills.
    That is the method I prefer. While there are many other effective ways that just seems to be the quickest and easiest for me.

    I have a 5 gallon bucket in my boat with about 6” of water. I put the fish in that, slice the hills, let it bleed out, clean it and bag it in the cooler. Because we are anchored in shallower water quite often, I don’t throw the guts and blood overboard till we leave that area. Don’t want to scent the water and possibly spook other trout from coming into the area. Good points in your video of taking care of your catch. Milo

      @@heroryan7859 this. i was on a salmon trip last week. someone talked about bleeding the fish in conversation. and lo and behold, next time i'm on youtube, there it is. fucking spying technology. and I've caught it doing it when words were never spoken either, i showed something to someone, then, there it is, popping up in ads. have to be accessing the phone's camera as well.

    50% of fishing is eating!

  • @sirtango1
    @sirtango1 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

    4:40 you see the black coagulated blood on the fillet. You can also stick a knife blade in through the gills and make one cut to hit a main blood vessel that runs along the backbone. I’ve never tried this method before. The way I described they bleed out quick. I’ll have to try this method to see if there is any difference in taste to bleeding them slower. Great eating either way! Cheers!

    1000% spot on. I just learned this recently and I do this to every fish I catch. I cut the throat down to the spine and throw them into a cooler of ice water. Makes a HUGE difference in flavor! It also makes a huge difference as you’re filleting them because your table stays nice and clean and your filet isn’t swimming around in all that blood.

      Id rather do that than clip the gills like this. Faster.

    I like to get the guts out first, in case you nick them and possibly add bad taste or bacteria to your filets. but usually not a big deal with fish the size of trout. Thanks for posting this!
