Those remind me of the giant bluegills I would catch out of my grandparents' pond when I was a kid. They were monsters, and my grandparents didn't like them because they thought they would outcompete the bass and catfish. So they told me to never throw back any that I caught, but I ignored them and never did because they were so much fun to catch and I definitely caught more of them than I did decent sized bass.
That 3 pounder your buddy caught was a tank but that biggest one you caught was one of the prettiest most perfect sunfish I’ve ever seen, I think I’d have got that one mounted 👍
@@deplorable_2024 It does NO harm whatsoever to a healthy fishery to actually harvest some of these fish for the table. And let me tell ya: bluegill, shellcracker, pumpkinseed, and others from the sunfish family of panfish taste excellent. The reason, is these panfish breed like flies.......much like crappie. Ask any biologist, they will tell you that you MUST harvest some of your fish, to keep your lake or pond in proper balance. Same goes for the large natural lakes & reservoirs. Over-populations of fish can actually harm an otherwise healthy fishery. When ya have too many gamefish, they eat up all the forage items. This also goes for bass.
Not sure what triggered you. I didn’t say anything about harming the fishery. The thread was about getting it mounted or putting it in an aquarium. I simply suggested a replica. I didn’t need your lecture on managing a fishery which I probably know more about than you do. Take a pill and chill out.
You're the only fishermen I've ever seen that go bluegill fishing and then are unhappy with catching a striper lol not that I don't understand. Love your videos man, there's no channel like yours
TYSVM for sharing the monster bluegill's with us , all ... Bringing back a special day back in the early "60's . We had a bait company and we got to fish a friend of Dad's private lakes . Monsters to me but , his babies . Thanks for sharing !
That looked like so much fun. Some people may not understand just how much fun catching big bluegill and shellcracker ( Redear Sunfish), really is. What’s better than that though is how good those fish are to eat. Fantastic table fare. Thank you for sharing a great video. Tight lines boys!
AWESOME VIDEOS! Good point, i wonder how many phones have been released in the exciting moments! Tight Lines Ty. Can't wait for your next video to drop.
I haven't seen Bluegill like that since the early 80's and I have never had the privilege of catching 1 that big. I would never mount any fish with the technology they have today. You can get a replica after taking all the correct measurements and taking pictures. They're too precious of a find to just waste for a memory. Congratulations you guys! Those are some Beautiful Bluegill. That 1 looked the size of an iron skillet for goodness sake! I wouldn't share that fishing spot with anyone I didn't trust wholeheartedly! Congratulations on the fish of a lifetime!😊❤
This reminds me of a quarry that I used to fish up in NC. It’s packed with big bluegills, big red ears, bass and crappie. I do mainly saltwater now, but this brings back memories.
YAKMAN HERE , THOSE BLUE GILL MONSTERS REMIND ME OF A TIME ME AND A BUDDY WOULD CATCH THEM AT Twilight on the lake in Michigan, it’s funny only because every time we casted it was a two second AND BANG U GOT ONE ! ! Please keep up the videos on Catching those monster bluegills!
dude I don't care how old you are or how long you've been fishing or what, catching bream is always fun. from a kid with crickets and cane pole to someone like you in this video going for the big boys, they're just fun to catch. not to mention they taste really, really good
Try Parr Resivoir in South Carolina. A day of ten three pound redears is common place. It's full of stumps so there's tons of cover and an abundance of threadfin shad. Also loaded with giant blue catfish.
I remember having a stringer full of big sunfish hanging off our 12' row boat. Then next catch I pulled up the stringer and all the fish were eaten by a huge snapping turtle who saw us only as the lunch boat.
Been there but different. Fishing from shore attempted to retrieve and it seemed to be stuck a rock. Made a new friend it would appear. He was Huge and wouldn't let go = fine you can have it beast.
Nice fish, I caught a 4 1/2 lb. At a golf course back in '70's thinking it was a large mouth bass we were fishing for in Lakewood California. Great memories.
*Lake Ossawinamakee (sp), A little east & north of Brainard, Minnesota, 1973. We caught a boatload of them on nightcrawlers & beetle spins. Also in deep water next to a marina...We didn't weigh fish back then but some of them were bigger than those. Most of them would easily cover a full-sized dinner plate. We dipped them in my Mother's homemade beer batter & deep fried them...We ate like Kings....One of my favorite childhood memories.*
My dad and I fished all over South Alabama and the Florida Panhandle. The big bluegill and shell crackers would pull the boat around. When they were on the bed we would fish with tiny plugs on 6 lb test. When I went alone I used a fly rod on bedding bream. Once you catch a really big bream, you will forget bass fishing
Be sure you let the fish go, not your phone. Had to laugh because I lost my phone off the dock this weekend while nailing some bluegill. I now have a direct line to the fish.
Those are beautiful fish and would like to have a couple of them in my 125 gallon tank! I have a friend who has a pond with hybrid sunfish that are huge and colorful too and a few kinds of panfish from Florida that are nice!
Amazing hog Bluegills! A lifetime ago we used to fish a lake in Minnesota and we found a place and bait that caught what we thought were Hawg Bluegutters as we called em. We had to use live leeches to get the big ones, worms only caught little ones. The fish we thought were huge were just over 1 -1.5 pounds. Then you are catching these mutants twice that size? 😆 🤣 Congrats on the fish and another great video. Keep up the good work.
I got into a farm pond that hadn't been fished in decades. It was full of huge bluegill and stunted crappie. I learned how to use an electric fillet knife that summer. I mean 3lb butter tub lid bluegill. When they turned sideways you couldn't hardly turn their head back. Pound for pound best fighting fish I've come across.
Me and my dad would go fishing 2 weeks outta every summer in Minnesota when I was a teenager. Well one summer we got on a lake we had to walk about two miles back to and the owners of the cabins we were staying at carried our boats in on atvs. Everyone who was with us caught their limit of largemouth and we had fish baskets full of bluegill with not one under 2lbs the biggest were over 3lb. They use to put out a blue book of biggest catches for the year and we were in it that year for bluegill and for northerns.
Biggest bluegills I have ever seen! They don’t put up much of a fight when they are that big, though. They’re so big that they get out of their own way 😊!
I stocked my new 2 1/2 acre pond last year with 2-3 inch bluegills, largemouth bass and perch. We are already catching 3/4 lb bluegills and perch. Bass are between 1 1/2 and 2 lb. My goal is to have 6-8 lb bass, 3-4 lb perch, and 3 lb + bluegills. I am feeding Purina fish pellets from a Texas fish feeder, put 300 crawdads in this year and 80 lbs of minnows (50 lbs spring/ 30 lbs fall). I am tagging all three species. And I’m working with a private company fisheries biologist on harvest strategy to achieve my goals. Determined to make it happen. Pond is in SW Iowa near the Missouri border. Pond is 27-28 ft deep at the dam. Solar aeration. Two large fine gravel spawning beds. Three Siltation ponds and tile to control drainage from 230 acre watershed. $100,000 invested. I retired 4 years ago and this a legacy project for my family. WISH ME LUCK!
Man those were some healthy gills. Any body of water that has a healthy gill population has big everything else😲. I'd loved to filet some of those. Great vid and keep your powder dry and your pantry stocked young man 💪😎🙏
You might want to try fishing the St John's river in Jacksonville FL. I have caught 3 lb pure bluegill in the small canals that feed into the river. We launched at the public launch and looked for small canals. I have never seen bluegill that big, really special genes.
I Slade some massive Largemouth in Texas last week I went to a bunch of urban ponds biggest one was 12 and a quarter caught a lot of crappie and these Sunfish are amazing wow
Absolute slabs! Nothing better. You all were catching those on red worms, use crickets and really tear em up next time because obviously they’re in there
Here is South Carolina I've caught shellcrackers over 3lbs. and bluegill almost 2lbs. South Carolina had the world record for shellcrackers at 5lb.7oz until relatively recent. When the zebra mussels were introduced and their population exploded, the size of the average shellcracker exploded. Catfish also grew huge.
Two days ago I was smallmouth bass fishing with a three inch Rapala and a five inch bluegill absolutely smashed it... one of the funniest moments I have had solo fishing in a while
I don't think it's an overstatement to say most men will never catch a bluegill that size in their lifetime. Fabulous fish thanks for sharing it.
It’s the pressure. I found an old hidden spring in the country loaded with plate sized bluegill and monster bass and catfish. 😊
He didn't either. That's not a bluegill. It's a hybrid bred to be large like that.
I have and I’m 12 but that thing is massive nice catch
You live in the wrong part of the country then. I'm 65 and have caught these since I was 9.
@@jamescraig8601 you are what you say you are just post a picture of a bigger bluegill that you have caught and I will shut my pie hole
I’ve caught bluegills that were big while bass fishing but I’ve never seen them that big fellas! Thanks for sharing!

So then they did outcompete the bass and catfish, which is why you caught more big gills than big bass?
They get so big there because of invasive muscles.
@@spurbronc9449 they be in the gym 😂
years ago I caught a couple over 7 lb
If you want big bass you harvest most of the small bass if you want big bluegill you harvest any big bass
That is incredible. I've never seen Bluegill that big!
That 3 pounder your buddy caught was a tank but that biggest one you caught was one of the prettiest most perfect sunfish I’ve ever seen, I think I’d have got that one mounted 👍
Replica is the best way to go. Measure it, photograph and turn it loose. He can do that anytime now.
An aquarium is the best way to go! You get to spend lots of years with it, up to 11 or 14!
it definitely was but i think the one his buddy caught was still smaller than the one he caught man fr but both are really beautiful big catches!

Such spectacular fish Ty! So pretty too !
That first fish, that huge shellcracker would have been the best fish dinner you ever had.
Fr
It didn't look like a straight shellcracker, probably a hybrid
Unbelievable monsters! Great catches, Ty!

It's a crime this video doesn't have a million views 😲
I would rather catch a 3 pound bluegill than a 10 pound largemouth. Especially on ultra-light spinning tackle. How much fun is that!!!!

those sunfish were INSANE! wow those were the biggest! bet they are great eating!
Smaller ones would be better for eating.
Catching Bluegillls is my favorite kind of fishing. If you catch a bunch of them they make for some good eating too!
I would just assume the thumbnail was click bait if it was anybody besides Ty...I love seeing these monster panfish!!!
Let’s go ty, I love how much work you put into you videos!
Hay colsen , I love how much work he puts into his videos too
So Great!!! Those are insanely Big!!! Ty, 4 lbs. line that is the insane part, what happen if a bigger fish 5,6,7, 8, 9, 10 fish comes alone....
I have caught a 73cm 6kg carp on 4lb 👍🏼💪
It's all about the drag/line tension
Nice video ty always love your videos keep up the good work and go catch us some more big ones

That is crazy, that thing looks like a tilapia! But it isn't.....Nice catch bro!!!
The second to last big one was so chill, it has probably been caught before. Hopefully it made some kids day
