Bluegill are my favorite fish to catch and my favorite fish to eat and that cane pole fishing brought back a whole lot of childhood memories. LFG is a true fisherman, no hype or bs from this guy.
When you see gar on the top water like that the oxygen level in the lake is really low. Just like when the catfish are floating to the top dead. ThE levels are really low. After a while you’ll see carp floating dead as well. The summer heat really depletes the oxygen levels in the waters this time of year.
gar have lung, they take air directly from the surface, so they have no problem with low oxygen water. There is something else that make it act that way, could be a recent catch and release.

Great video! My grandmother from Shreveport would fish gills out of caddo lake and fry the whole mess for dinner. She'd be in a little jon boat with a paddle all day to bring food home. The most underrated eating fish there is.
I remember when I was a boy, my Southern grandma took us kids to her friend's backyard pond to catch a whole mess of bluegill, then we went back to her house and she fileted them all out with the skin still on. She saved all the tails and fins and fried them up along with the filets. I'll tell you what, I still dream about those fins and tails and how we all fought over them once we tasted them for the first time.

To be honest, I didn't pay much attention when I was younger, and by the time I was getting old enough to start paying attention to recipes she wasn't doing much with fish. At least not fresh caught fish. I do remember cornmeal, maybe a little flour, salt and pepper, but I couldn't tell y'all all the seasonings.
Jason, try your Bluegill fry using 50/50 mix of McCormick's fish fry mix and McCormick's cajun, have fed hundreds with this mix and everyone absolutely loves it. Up here in Tn, Bluegills are my #1 summer target fish, so wonderful to eat, and everyone loves the taste.
I love how wholesome it is kind of seeing your home life. It reminds me a lot of when I was a kid catching fish with my dad and grandpa and then my grandma would cook then all up. Thanks for the great video.
I can remember when Steph wasn't so keen on deep frying anything back in the early days, now theirs a 15 lb Cajun fryer in the yard and an extra deep iron skillet on the stove😉

Look at the scales... they are in diagonal rows; swipe the curved edge of the inverted spoon bowl along those rows to lift the scales off. Just experiment and you'll get the hang of it; once you get it, there's no going back!

I always scale the fish first, hold the head and scale it with a spoon...and the eggs? My brother and I used to fight over them when we were kids! Rolled in flour/corn meal and salt, fried in peanut oil! Man, they are tasty!!

Another option: Growing up Southwestern Colorado our favorite fish to eat was trout and bluegill. We scaled them (except Brooks), removed entrails and gills (left the heads). If you are squeamish about the head they make a good handle. We had a Dutch oven we would get the oil really hot, spread the fish open so it cooks on the inside and out. In less than a minute they are so crispy you can eat everything. Love you stuff. Thank you.
The gar petting was amazing!!! I have never see someone be able to just reach out a pet one. Regular white bread balled up and squished on a hook will catch a mess of bluegill /sunfish too. cheaper than crappie bits. now I know how to descale one and I don't mind picking at my food to eat it (yes I love crawfish) so frying the fish up like that would be fun for me as well. My wife and kids finally bought me a fillet station and it's the best thing they have bought beside the electric fillet knife make life so much easier and the best part about the station is that it's easy to clean up
Bro, frying up the fish whole like that is a really common Asian method of frying fish. It's super delicious for most species. Just scale it and gut it. Serve a tart, spicy sauce on the side and you're golden! Also, if you make it extra crispy, those fins turn into the best chip you'll ever eat. Great video man.
A friend and I were Bass fishing on Lake Texoma in HiPort Marina. He had borrowed a Rapala minnow, the wooden hand carved type. This was in the 80's. His rod bent and he is squealing like a little girl. It was a tug of war for him and everybody could hear him all over the marina. He says it's coming up and UP it came. It was a HUGE GAR, with my Rapala Minnow between his chompers. Well he just cut the line and I watched my expensive Rapala Minnow swim away. He didn't offer to pay me for it, nor did he bring us any snacks or drinks. He didn't even offer up gas money. He never went fishing with me again. I sure missed my Rapala Minnow. This was #2 on ride share that he didn't share. The first was to LF of LFG. 180 mi round trip. No #3.Good video you Gar whisperer.
I've heard about descaling fish using a table spoon under running water. It's supposed do a great job and scales don't fly everywhere and you don't cut the skin. I've never tried it, but haven't had the chance since I heard about it. It makes since but can't say this is the best way.
Hey i noticed your using your first fishing pole when you were younger thats awesome. I never went fishing when I was younger I never had anyone to take me. I fell in love with fishing on my own and now I can't get enough. But I never tried eating any bass or blue gill or crappie I normally just bought my catfish from HEB.
As a custom knife maker I gotta say the knife tips were spot on! High carbon steel has been around for 1000’s of years and will continue to be if you take care of it!
I clean my gills by scaling first using a spoon. The scales dont flip real bad like when you use a knife. Then I cut the head off and remove the guts. Also they are excellent to scale first and then filet off of the bone and leave the skin on. It adds more flavor. I enjoy you videos. Keep them coming.
I’ve started doing this with my six year old. Did it with my dad as a kid, but with sailors choice in salt water. We’d easily fill a bucket and then fire up the fry daddy and eat em like Hesthcliff. We also went to this fish camp sometimes that did a Thursday night fingerling catfish night. Same thing. Today we spent 6 hours out chasing bass in 100-degree heat, then finished the day with a few eater bluegill caught in less than 20 minutes. I think it was the best part of her day, and now we got fish combs to pick clean!
one of the things that's helped me in the past is taking a spoon, scoop-side-down, and trying to get underneath the scales that way, working back and forth towards the head kinda like buffing a floor, if that makes sense. supposed to keep scales from flying everywhere
Bluegills imo is the best for to eat hands down! I either fillet and fry them or I'll scale them then wrap them in foil with lemon and butter along with your choice of seasonings then throw them right onto the grill! Its alittle easier to fillet them in MN because they are giant compared gills from then south!
I love bluegill. They are a fun fish to catch. And very tasty . A hint for scaling them. We always use a regular old spoon 🥄. We put the spoon with the back of it facing up. Start at the gills and work your way dot. The scales won’t fly all over and most all of them stick to the spoon. Also much safer than a knife and easy for your kids to use too. Give it a try.

Dude love the gills, just a suggestion. If you score them on both sides it will get the batter down all the way to the bones and you can pick the meat off in chunks with very little bones if any in the meat. My grandkids loves them that way. Keep safe and keep fishing!
Well, what can I say, watched this while eating some fish patties and garden fresh squash for lunch...... all I could think of was how sweet tasting those blue gills must be...so..loading up my 10 ft, 5 wt fly rod with some nibbles and a little strike indicator and heading to the ol pontoon boat at the marina.... plan on bringing back a bucketful for supper tonight.... first gotta check to make sure got plenty of Franks red hot.... man my mouth is already watering......... love your videos sir... love your lake life family also.... you da man!

I eat paleo and I do no breading, dry rub of your choice. Score the sides and fry in lard. Sunfish and crappie are amazing this way. The skin almost has a bacon taste this way. I also leave the head on as it’s faster cleaning with just gutting and scaling with a spoon.
When I a fillet blue gill I cut through the rib cage and fillet the meat off the skin then I just trim around the rib bones it works out a lot faster when your doing a lot at one time. I catch much larger blue gills in the mid west so you get some good meat out of them.

Try using a tea spoon to scale your fish while in a pan or bucket of water. Scales don't go every where and I'd really easy, then cut from back of head to back of vent. Done deal, ready for the pan. With a little corn meal and flour. Tasty.
Use a table spoon for scaling gills much easier! And cut head and gut it last .the spoon helps control the scale flying everywhere as bad .if you are doing a bunch say a hundred or so use your board to hold and a pressure washer and descale in seconds flip do other side place two close together and do two at a time it works well !

Gar do not have lungs but can use their swim bladder like a lung to gulp air during low oxygen levels

Never filleted a blue gill. The bones are so easy to avoid.

Tip for scaling: if you use an inverted spoon blade and perform diagonal strokes the scales just zip off with ease and don't fly everywhere.

Hot weather= low oxygen. There's more oxygen at the surface which is where the gas exchange takes place.

LFG, growing up I've always used a spoon to descale and it was much easier that a knife. You should try it one time

Spoon works incredibly well for scalling. Also if you cut a slit down the lateral line it makes the back meat peal off really easily.
I remember growing up and my grandpa having fish fries with a ton of gill. Haven't had them in forever, I will be frying some up this weekend
Floridian here we just gut, de-head and descale. Fry up with some grits and fresh corn. Crispy tails are the best. Delish!

I eat paleo and I do no breading, dry rub of your choice. Score the sides and fry in lard. Sunfish and crappie are amazing this way. The skin almost has a bacon taste this way. I also leave the head on as it’s faster cleaning with just gutting and scaling with a spoon.

When I a fillet blue gill I cut through the rib cage and fillet the meat off the skin then I just trim around the rib bones it works out a lot faster when your doing a lot at one time. I catch much larger blue gills in the mid west so you get some good meat out of them.

When I use crappie nibbles I use them for gills but I use the green chartreuse ones they work really well for Blue gill

Try using a tea spoon to scale your fish while in a pan or bucket of water. Scales don't go every where and I'd really easy, then cut from back of head to back of vent. Done deal, ready for the pan. With a little corn meal and flour. Tasty.
Bacon grease works great as well and for me stays on a bit better.

Use a table spoon for scaling gills much easier! And cut head and gut it last .the spoon helps control the scale flying everywhere as bad .if you are doing a bunch say a hundred or so use your board to hold and a pressure washer and descale in seconds flip do other side place two close together and do two at a time it works well !
Where did you get the “camp use” knife and the others you had for hunting like that setup??? I know you had a video about all your different knives but did not know which one it was! Thinks for any input!
