Great video Jessica. I love my cast iron and use it daily some pieces are over 100 years old and I have never taken it down to bare metal either. I grew up learning how to take care of my cast iron from my grama. She used to use lard as well and wipe down her pan and stick it in her cook stove oven for hours, so that’s the way I did it. There are so many ways of seasoning pans, you just gotta do what works for you. I also do a quick season like you do. Thanks again friend 🌷🇨🇦
Dang kids always creating problems for their parents. ha ha Nothing is perfection around your home? I believe Aaron is perfection! We need more Aaron. Nice seasoning. I've never seen seasoning cast iron that way. I've always seen the bake on way using the oven.
All of mt cast iron pans have been handed down or if I see one in an antique store I can’t pass it up . Great video ! After cleaning the pans , Cooking in the pans is what makes them perfect ! You need to buy Wyatt his own pan! Thank you for sharing ! 🍳🥘🍳
Nice collection of cast iron! Great job cleaning the tortilla pan. The view of the lake is so beautiful! Be blessed, Jessica! Very informative , thank you!❤❤❤❤
I like this method rather than the 400* oven for an hour etc. That really smokes up the house! I'm not going to stress over perfection like you said, it's a tool and needs to be used!
If pans get really cruddy with a lot of burnt on grease, they can be thrown directly into a fire and left for a while and then bring them out and give them a light scrubbing and they will come out like new. I put mine in my oven when it's on a clean cycle, and it's great.
When we downsized, I gave family members over 30 pieces of cast iron that I found at sales and rescued. I always used steel wool and salt to clean the ones I found or a drill with a steel brush attachment. Then washed in a hot soapy water oven dried and oiled and left in the oven overnight.
Thanks you so much for this video today because I have an issue with one of my cast iron pans and you have been a big help. Thank so much for sharing. God bless you. Take care from Cape Cod✌️🇺🇸💕
I love my cast iron pans and dutch oven, My cast iron pans were past down from my grandmother. Pans are at over 100 years old. Because pans are older I don't have to season as much. Most food slides out of pans. Wash, dry with paper towel, season as necessary.
I'm glad you mentioned that the Lodge pans are good and you use them. I've been wanting to try using cast-iron, but some of the others are very expensive. I am excited to try a Lodge pan now!
Love it when I find your video has downloaded in the morning. What a way to start my day!! Cast iron can be scary to clean and use. I have glass top electric burners so I rarely use as it scratches so badly. But we do use outside for fish frying and deer frying. I have never watched a video that takes me through the whole process of cleaning and curing. Thank you for that. Wyatt's face reminds me of my boys coming to me after a debacle and me seeing their smile and thinking "Oh Well". Love is grand.
I have my grandmother's cast iron skillet that is almost 200 years old. It belonged to my great, great grandmother and is pristine. There is only a small mark on the bottom of the skillet, and I have no earthly idea who it was made by.
Thank you for sharing your method of seasoning your cast iron. I use cast iron both in my kitchen and also outside. My normal method of cleaning all of them is to sprinkle a couple tablespoons of kosher salt into my pan while it is cooling down from cooking. I then scrub it with a nylon scrubbie then a paper towel. I brush any excess salt from the pan and I’m done. If someone burns some food in the pan, I’ll wipe it out as best I can, heat 2 inches of plain water in it and let it simmer for 10 minutes. I then dump the water and clean it with the kosher salt. I then put it back on the stove to dry it then I’ll wipe it down with a tablespoon of canola oil. Whenever I’ve actually had to fully season a cast iron piece, I do it on our grill outside as the one time i tried to season in my oven I smoked the kitchen! I’ve seasoned all my 3 legged cast iron Dutch ovens (i have 4) that we used when camping-now that we can no longer camp due to medical issues, I use those Dutch ovens on a special steel table that my Hubby made for me to use outside. I can build a fire right on the steel and cook in my Dutch ovens on the coals. All my cast iron ware will pass to my youngest son when I’m gone along with the cast iron ware I inherited from Hubby’s Mom when she passed. Hopefully they will continue to be passed down through the generations along with my favorite recipes.
@@modernhomesteadalaska i use my Dutch Ovens that have 3 legs on the bottom. I’ve cooked all sorts of things in them from Breakfast casseroles with biscuits on top (enough to feed 12)to bread loaves and pizza. When we used to camped I cooked in them for all 3 meals. Once I even cooked a fresh peach pie using my 14” DO.
I have actually found cast iron thrown out in the trash because the owner said we're ruined. We burned it off and reseasoned it and still use them today. I have wondered about the enameled cast iron. Thank you for the information!
In the past year I have accumulated a whole set of lodge cast iron pots and pans. I hate doing dishes and I actually find it easier to take care of them than my ceramic pans. I love them! My favorite part is stove to oven, no problem! ❤
Thank you so much. They get in the way when it’s garden time! Wish I could have them more but they are an expense I can’t always do, I just needed to get out of my house the other day.
Jason over at CogHillFarms recently started to clean cast iron pans they had and those bought at the thrift store. I found his method interesting as well as Jessica’s I don’t have any cast iron but if I find any at thrift stores I will buy and now I have ideas for restoring them.
this is going to sound odd to you but do you save all your old cooking grease? if so put it in a 5 gallon bucket keep the lid on tight and when you need to season a cast iron pan of any kid dip it in and place it in fire outside leave it for max 15 mins turning once pull it out and allow it to cool then take it to the oven and oil again and bake with new oil at 200 upside down never had a problem doing it this way and I have been seasoning cast iron for over 60 years
I have 2 cast iron loaf pans that I love. I want 2 more since I usually make 4 loaves of bread at a time. Cast iron is all that I fry with unless it's just a quick fry in stainless steel
This might be weird, but I love to scrub pans. I think it isvtheraputic. I stand in front of the sink and concentrate on the process. I moved to Seattle for 8 years. Circumstances put my boyfriend and I living in homeless shelters for two years. One of the places that we stayed in had room for about 25 people x2. A day shift and night shift. I have social anxiety disorder and that many people put me over the top. I would resort to scrubbing the pots and pans. On the odd side, i hate to do dishes!! I have been housed for nearly 15 years now.
good job! turns out the whole never use soap on cast iron was because of lye back in the day... I've found that the worst thing to use in my pans is avocado oil... it seems to strip the finish over time - although I try to stick with lard or tallow it's still my go to...
I love cast iron however I live with a glass top stove (I hate that thing) so I can't use it so I had to go out and but La cruse that stuff is $$$$$ so I only have 3
Good afternoon, Jessica. I love my cast iron, both raw and enameled. Thank you for another fantastic video.
I use what looks like chainmail to clean my pans. Works very well.

Cast iron is the best! I’ve never seen the initial seasoning done on the stove top before - that was great information. Thank you!
Beautiful over the lake

This is so great! There are so many second hand cast iron pans in the world that need saving.

CCall that cast iron a snowflake in the winter and a mandala or flower the rest of the year 😊. Leave it out!
Haha! It's pretty much a thing of beauty no matter what.
I managed to find a le Creuset cast iron pan with lid like new in the car bootsale here in the uk for £3 was my find of the year I love it

They are the best! So easy to use!
A steak in a cast iron pan is the best. I always put my clean pan on the stove and the heat dries it completly.
That's what she said she does too.
Me too!
Cast iron is the best!!

I miss having cast iron pans. I have glass electric stove. So I have to be careful. Now I know how to take care of cast iron pans
It is a little tricky to use on a glass top stove.
Enamal cast iron pan I use now

I love cast iron however I live with a glass top stove (I hate that thing) so I can't use it so I had to go out and but La cruse that stuff is $$$$$ so I only have 3
Can anything else be used to oil cast iron pans, other than beef fat?
I would make him clean up the pan
lol no need on further damage. Mostly I would have I did want to make a video to show how to clean it up.
