Easy: Wash with soap and water, dry it well with a towel (even better if you can heat dry it on the stove) and put it away. If you don't use it everyday and/or live in an area with a humid climate you should put a thin coat of oil on it everytime after washing it. That's literally all you need to know.

I learned this same technique many years ago from my dad it worked so well I went out of my way to find old rusty pans my friends and family finely told me to stop I couldn't give them away you have inspired me to find a nasty pan and season it lol
Great explanation. I did a similar process for my cast iron pans, eight years ago, and they are still outstanding. Can wash with soap and water. Used Flax oil, baked on at 450 degrees, let the oven cool with the pan still in the oven, and did this five times. My fry pans were used by my mom, back in the 1940's, and they still work.
Pans manufactured before the 1950s are more likely to contain lead. Lead was used as an alloying element and presents a health risk, best to get those pans tested.

Another thing to know about cast iron is that it can crack. Before buying a used cast iron pan hold it by the handle and let the pan hang down (vertically). Then give the back of the pan a good flick with your finger. If it rings it’s a good pan, it it makes a thud it has a crack.

Use vinegar, salt and fill the pan with water. Let it boil for a few minutes without scrubbing the burnt portion. If desired add a few drops of liquid soap. Take a wooden spoon and gently remove the burnt food. Remove from heat. Allow it to cool and wash as usual. Do not put cold water in a hot nonstick as it causes the pan to wobble. Cleaning cast iron using acids removes iron oxides and lends to pitting in cast iron. Oxalic acid is particularly known for it. I have no idea if the concentrations in a potato would have a serious effect or not, but it might be something to look into.

THE PEOPLE OF THE OLDER GENERATIONS, SEEM TO HAVE A LOT OF KNOWLEDGE, ABOUT VARIOUS THINGS WHICH THE YOUNGER PEOPLE DON'T KNOW ABOUT SO IT'S ALWAYS BEST TO ASK THEM FOR ADVICE.
It looks like an older person typed this 🙃
DON'T WORRY. YOU'LL GET OLD ONE DAY. TRY TO GAIN SOME KNOWLEDGE AND WISDOM FROM THE OLDER GENERATION, INSTEAD OF PLAYING AROUND WITH YOUR CELLPHONE ALL DAY WHICH YOU YOUNG ONES TODAY, TEND TO DO. 🤯
@@RS-ln3nsI was actually hoping to scroll down and hear from you if you have any wisdom to share about cast iron pan care! Please share if you do 😊 I really do cherish wisdom from the older generation!
@@pinneddown3296 IF YOU HAD ANY WISDOM, YOU WOULD PAY ATTENTION TO THIS VIDEO WHICH HAS ALREADY GIVEN CLEAR INSTRUCTIONS, ON HOW TO TAKE CARE OF YOUR CAST IRON PANS. SEASON THE PAN WELL, USING COOKING OIL AND NEVER LET IT SOAK IN WATER, WHEN WASHING IT. THIS WAY THE PAN SHOULDN'T RUST. MY ADVICE TO THE YOUNG ONE. YOU CAN ALSO ASK YOUR GRANDMOTHER. MAYBE SHE MAY HAVE SOME WISDOM AS WELL, ON HOW TO TAKE CARE OF CAST IRON PANS.

...if you're a *certain age,* one *knows* how to cure Cast Iron!!!!!! I learned by use and observation. However, I did have to instruct my kids because they are definitely not "of a certain age!" Good job here!
Sunday mornings and Granny making them cat heads from scratch.....they've never been beat by anyone.
@@imnotyourp Not sure what *cat heads* from scratch are... LOL! I'm guessing they're pancakes!?
@@eleanorwittering3126 - No ma'am. They were her biscuits. You getting a grown man tearing up here now! That sausage & bacon going and YES, she had them pancake stacked up on the side of the stove ready to bring to the table! 🤤🥲 A lost art for sure.
@@eleanorwittering3126 - Maybe "cat heads" was a Florida term....my bad
@ I love regional colloquialisms!: One can learn a lot from such!
Love your videos. I just liked and subscribed.
Thank you so much!
Cleaning cast iron using acids removes iron oxides and lends to pitting in cast iron. Oxalic acid is particularly known for it. I have no idea if the concentrations in a potato would have a serious effect or not, but it might be something to look into.
That is how grandma told me to do it when i was 14.....but i had forgot the steps except for salt....I am now 75.
So thank YOU very much 🥰🥰🥰
Thank you for your video. I am nearly throw the pan away.
How often do you need to do this to keep it in good shape? Once a year? Or is this a one-time thing?
Thanks for sharing. I will try your idea.
For mine I scrubbed off the excess rust with soap and water and then dried it with a paper towel and then scrubbed it with oil and salt then wiped out the rust and salt
Excellent! Thank you🎉Looks brand new🤗
I wonder if this would work to clean the backs of your stainless steel pans are the backs of other pans
