THIS video is what I’ve been waiting for. I have beautiful cast iron pans that my grandmother gave me. Now I’ll be able to use them. ✨Thank You so much! 😃🥳
Thank you for this. I’ve watched other videos and they have missed the step of heating, cooling and oiling the pan multiple times. No wonder my pans have always turned out just OK.
Great explanation. I did a similar process for my cast iron pans, eight years ago, and they are still outstanding. Can wash with soap and water. Used Flax oil, baked on at 450 degrees, let the oven cool with the pan still in the oven, and did this five times. My fry pans were used by my mom, back in the 1940's, and they still work.
I love cast iron, have been collecting it for over 40yrs. My son also has started a collection. He & his fiancee have a pegboard that is on the wall by their range. They receny picked up a kettle ( for stews, etc., to can up for the winter. They bought it at a swap meet/ flea market. A very nice addition. I just used salt on a cast iron saucepan. Yes, you can make pasta in a cast iron pot. I have been using that pan for 25(?)yrs. Loved your antics while you presented your video. ❤
Easy: Wash with soap and water, dry it well with a towel (even better if you can heat dry it on the stove) and put it away. If you don't use it everyday and/or live in an area with a humid climate you should put a thin coat of oil on it everytime after washing it. That's literally all you need to know.
@@caraziegel7652 thanks for the reply , i was about to dump mine , but think I will try and save it , I will try coconut oil as it’s easier to get here in Jamaica 🇯🇲. Thanks..
Sir, sir how did you know I needed this video? Thank you sooooo much! I have two, one belonged to my auntie who passed. I didn't want to get rid of it, I just know there was a way to clean and re-season it. 🍳❤Thanks again
Another thing to know about cast iron is that it can crack. Before buying a used cast iron pan hold it by the handle and let the pan hang down (vertically). Then give the back of the pan a good flick with your finger. If it rings it’s a good pan, it it makes a thud it has a crack.
Yes!!! They can also warp… place them flat surface and see if they wobble… then take a credit card and hold it on the bottom inside and out and make sure you can’t see any light … that it’s flat and tight against each surface… no warping!
I am so happy I thank you for the advice the best yet for cleaning cast iron less messy. I have two cast iron pans I bought haven’t used because they need cleaning. I can’t thank you enough that will be my projects to do this winter when I have my wood stove on. I am so excited to finally get them done so I can use them. Thanks for sharing that valuable information, you are appreciated.❤
THE PEOPLE OF THE OLDER GENERATIONS, SEEM TO HAVE A LOT OF KNOWLEDGE, ABOUT VARIOUS THINGS WHICH THE YOUNGER PEOPLE DON'T KNOW ABOUT SO IT'S ALWAYS BEST TO ASK THEM FOR ADVICE.
DON'T WORRY. YOU'LL GET OLD ONE DAY. TRY TO GAIN SOME KNOWLEDGE AND WISDOM FROM THE OLDER GENERATION, INSTEAD OF PLAYING AROUND WITH YOUR CELLPHONE ALL DAY WHICH YOU YOUNG ONES TODAY, TEND TO DO. 🤯
A couple months ago I looked up everywhere for good tutorials on how to do this because i also got myself a pan secondhand. Noone ecplained it anywhere near as simple and good as you did, which is why the result is very meh.... I'm gonna try again immediately. Thanks already!
Use vinegar, salt and fill the pan with water. Let it boil for a few minutes without scrubbing the burnt portion. If desired add a few drops of liquid soap. Take a wooden spoon and gently remove the burnt food. Remove from heat. Allow it to cool and wash as usual. Do not put cold water in a hot nonstick as it causes the pan to wobble. If it was badly burnt apply a little oil, heat and rewash.
That's a lodge cast iron . It's one of the best pans made . Good thing you found it . Would have been a shame it went into the trash . They can be pricey as new . So you got away with a really good deal on that pan.
I was looking at a square grill bottom frying pan in a Value Village and a passerby told me it was a good one and that $20.00 for it was ‘cheap’. It is a Lodge. I bought it because a stranger said it was good.
Great informational video on cleaning an old cast iron pan. Thank you, I repeated 0:41 about three times and just had a nice laugh, thank you for keeping the blooper and being authentic in your videos. I hope you and your family experince God's love for you all. God bless you 🕊🙏
No matter what you hear you absolutely 100% can use dish soap. You can even scrub with a nylon brush and it does not affect the seasoning if you reseason it after washing for like 5 minutes on stove
@KN-lu5ty - Absolutely agree. I only need a few drops of dish soap most of the time. I've been using everything from 100 year old pans to relatively new pans. Never harmed any of them. Sometimes I only need salt and water, but most of the time, dish soap and water. The key is to make certain they are completely dry after washing, and then give a quick reseason on the stove top, and it's good to go. (I use my cast iron almost daily, and I rotate the ones I use.)
@@llofdarkwater9152 Yep daily here too even multiple times a day and no need to reseason even every time maybe once every couple times. Don't understand at all the constant parroting about no dish soap lol!! It's sad because people literally don't try cast iron because they hear they can't wash them. And they're life changing
They can also warp… place them flat surface and see if they wobble… then take a credit card and hold it on the bottom inside and out and make sure you can’t see any light … that it’s flat and tight against each surface… no warping!
Wow! Absolutely incredible! The video was so informative and well done. I’m excited to see the next one about how to wash and clean a restored cast iron pan to maintain its new seasoning.
Hi. I clean my cast iron skillet with vinegar and water. I oil it with extra virgin olive oil. After seasoning and cooking it the pan has a bumpy feel. What did I do wrong please?
Thank you very much Brandon! This video was especially helpful and interesting. The pan was in sad shape and ended up looking almost new, and the process is very easy. I have an old cast iron fry pan I'll try this on. Recently, I bought an enameled cast Dutch oven, beautiful, and did much research on prepping it for use by seasoning it with oil. Used grapeseed oil, but it was a *disaster* and nearly ruined the pan because the oil turned into a glue-like substance and was almost impossible to remove. It took days of scrubbing with a variety of implements and products. Any suggestions? Your humor in this one is fantastic....love your videos!
I use America’s Test Kitchen’s method. Put your cast iron into a self cleaning oven cycle. It will remove everything. Then you start layering flaxseed oil and baking it. It takes a while but my cast iron is non stick now. Very easy to clean and maintain. Look up ATK Cast Iron Seasoning.
I remove rust from my cooking pans, by, adding cold water in the pan, let it boils with a quick boil -- then dry pan with paper towels - removing rust, wash pan, dry, and use a little oil to coat pan...the end. Use oil after each use to keep pan from rusting.
You need use a led / other heavy metals test kit. Sone people use them to smelt metals but it contaminates them. It's super important that you check this, especially if its a old one (some were manufactured with lead) or its thrifted.
Potatoes don't have oxalic acid. Rhubarb leaves do have. Hence we don't eat rhubarb leaves. Only stem. Oxalic acid will kill you. But potatoes do have ascorbic acid which is good old vitamin C. In any case, potatoes have acid and that helps cleaning the rust. Excellent video, nonetheless.
After doing some research I have come to the conclusion that you are incorrect. There is oxalic acid in potatoes (and many foods we eat), but rhubarb leaves just have a much higher concentration of it that would poison humans.
Haven’t tried avocado oil but we started using flaxseed oil when americas test kitchen recommended it and it made an astonishing difference compared to what we had used previously.
I might have missed it, after using the seasoned pan, how is it cleaned so that the flavor of the food does not effect the next time the pan is being used?
Mild dish soap and warm water to wash the cast iron pan in the kitchen sink. The seasoning from the pan will not deteriorate because modern dish soap does not have lye in it.

Hello.. I just started doing one of those cast iron pan,but I use coconut oil...is that ok? It came out ok..I think.. what do you think?
I usually use grape seed oil to season the whole pan. Makes a really strong layer. Flax seed tended to flake on me. Idk why.

This explains the flax seed oil well.
Avocado oil is better because it’s non inflammatory. For your body, not the pan😂

Hello and thank you for the information 😊. May I ask why you need to put the pan in the oven before seasoning it?
The oven helps it dry faster after rinsing so it doesn’t start to rust before you start seasoning it.
That was brilliant. Will give it a go on Nana's cast iron pans.
Can you do a video on how to clean them once seasoned and how often to season them pls?

Flaxseed is recommended by America’s Test Kitchen. I use Crisco shortening.
