  • Cast Iron Dutch Oven Restoration is a video where I show the method that I use to remove rust from cast iron cookware in order to restore it for use again. I use a vinegar spray solution to save on the vinegar usage I go through the steps that you need to take to keep from damaging the cast iron cookware. You will also get to see the finished product after three rounds of seasoning has been applied.

    NC girl whose Grandmother used only cast iron; cleaned them with vinegar and seasoned them with Lard she made. Best dang collards and cornbread came out of those pans. I am now a homemaker using cast iron in my modern NY kitchen. Thanks for the Grapeseed oil tip, I am Vegan. Your channel is a Godsend.

    You did the best job I've ever seen removing the rust from cast iron. I have this type pot that my mother use to call her baked bean pot. She stopped using it back in the early 70s when new fancy cookware came along. The old bean pot was put in my father's barn where he used it for dipping horse feed. The pot then got thrown into an unfloored room in the barn where it stayed for the last 48 years almost. It is rusted brown now. I'm gonna use your way of cleaning up the old bean pot. Thank you so much for doing this video.

      @@castIroncookware Both my folks would be glad to see me clean up the old bean pot...and thanks to you I can do that now! My mother cooked much food in cast iron pots and skillets. Not just beans but biscuits, cornbread, muffins shaped like ears of corn and regular muffins, cakes, even pies and cobblers in the huge skillets along with fried chicken, pork chops, then gravy from the drippings and such. I still have her other cast iron stuff which lasts forever. ...You do a real good channel. Thank you.

As I was just about to take a wire wheel grinder to it and start the seasoning process over, a friend came by and saw what was going on and said stop. This was his(quick) fix for the rusty kettle. Fill it 3/4 full with clean water, bring to a rolling boil over an open flame (outdoor only fix) at the boiling point quickly throw in a handful of baking soda (stand back, it foams up fast.) did this twice and could not believe the results. Love this and thank you so much. My husband brought home what he thought was a gigantic planter from a neighbor who was getting rid of his dead mother's old junk. It is, in fact, a huge cast iron cooking pot. The kind that the old timers would put over a fire to cook huge stews or boil down cane in. God bless its heart, it is rusty like crazy because it has been left out in the weather for years! I didn't know what to do to remove all the rust that has accumulated inside and out, but, thanks to your video, I know what to try. Will do this as soon as the rain ends here because I want that precious find to be restored to all her former glory. God bless from me here in southwest Virginia...a mountain girl through and through.

    Oh where were you when I was restoring our 1930 Home Comfort kitchen wood stove??? It had sat in a cabin next to our dairy barn for decades and the roof leaked! The cooking surface was a rusty mess. We moved it to the house barn and it was my project. I did not want to sand blast or use chemicals. I opted for some extreme measures in my book, but I was desperate. I soaked the surface with coke, then wiped it off, followed by olive oil and fine steel wool and lots of rags. And worked my way over the stove. We set the stove in the yard and lit a fire. It smelled like an Italian restaurant :-) She has graced our kitchen now since 2016 and looks new. No stove blacking was used. ~ Diane

    I came across your video while searching for something else and decided to watch this. This was very interesting because I'm trying to find a used Dutch oven in some garage sale or flea market. I know that it would probably be old and rusty and to figure out how to clean it. Well I will have these instructions and use it when I find my Dutch oven. The one seen in the stores are not made like the old days. These are rough edges inside and out. Reason for that Dutch oven that it makes the best damn popped popcorn ever! When I house sat for a month these people had this very old Dutch oven that they used to pop popcorn and when I found that out it was so so so good! Try it! FYI we have 5 cast iron skillets from 6" to 15" that are 60 years old and good shape - my moms. Took care of them like he said.

      Trust me, I think you will like the popcorn popped in a cast-iron Dutch oven. One thing though in popping corn the best popcorn is to not use oils or popcorn oil and such. If you want the best tasting popcorn ever regardless whether it's cast-iron is using Crisco. It has to be that, and it will be a lighter fluffier tasting popcorn. 😋

    I have some cast iron that is over 100 years old thanks to grandma and a little help from great grandma. Some of these were even brought across the nation in covered wagons and are still in use today. I must admit that the older cast is much better than today's cast. I don't have to deal with rust much but I do have to deal with build up. This is done simply by putting the piece into the campfire and letting it cook off until the pan barely turns barely red.. Then using a welders brush you brush off a lot of now white residue. Put back into the fire and repeat until it is all gone. Wipe hot pan with paper towel. Then use another paper towel making sure the pan is still very hot, drop in some bacon grease only and apply it with the paper towel. Let cool slowly and apply more bacon grease to the pan while cooling. To finish seasoning, make some french fries using bacon grease, pure lard, or Crisco only. The pan or dutch oven is now ready for stick free cooking including eggs! To clean, pour off any excess oil, let cool, wash off with cold water and a rag, Then dry with a towel.

    • @castIroncookware
      @castIroncookware  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is awesome! There is a ton of History tied up in those pieces. I would be careful about letting them get to red because there is potential for fire damage. It sounds like you are able to catch it in The Sweet Spot though. I personally do not endorse fire cleaning because many people do not know how to find The Sweet Spot and wind up with severely damaged cast iron in the process. Continue to hand those stories down when you pass them to your children. That is an amazing connection to have.

    This is exactly what I needed to watch. I love caste iron, and I have a few. I need to learn how to de-rust the older pots and pans that I have picked up from the second hand stores. Thank you 😊 💓

    Amazed! Amazing!!! My phone must have heard me today and placed you in my TH-cam feed. I pulled my lid (which I never use) out of the cabinet today, and said, "Goodness! How am I ever going to get all that rust off? I've never used this lid and it looks terrible." I will be doing this pot cleaning this week. Thank you so much for sharing this! 🤗
