- In this art demo, inspired by a technique I learned from @carolnelsonfineart, I use aluminum foil and acrylic paint to create the most stunning and unusual collage papers. These are SO MUCH FUN to make!
Supplies for this paper:
Aluminum foil - heavy duty
Household items that have texture
Acrylic paint in your palette - full strength

This 2022 video was originally filmed Live on Instagram, and thus in a vertical format. All new 2023 videos are horizontal and the audio will be correctly linked to the video! Unfortunately there is nothing I can do to correct the audio misalignment in an older Instagram video.

So glad that you love the content. I totally agree with the vertical not being the way to go. Any of my vertical videos were reposted from the art demos I did on Instagram last year. Now I wish I had waited to refilm them all, but some got reposted before I thought about doing this. Still might do it, we'll see. So many new papers to film that I hate going backwards!

I love using embossing folders on lots of media as well as paints, inks, chalks, etc. I will try aluminum foil tomorrow.

Have a tried this using the metal tape from the DIY hardware store? If you stick that to paper or cardstock and use the embossing folders it works well too. Thank you!

I actually have 4 videos showing how I put together a series of 5 different papers in a single collage. Not sure if aluminum foil paper made one of these, but the process is the same using other papers.

On the sticky acrylic paint, try appluing cold wax or baby powder for storing 😊

You can also paint the folder inside and then put the foil in. As long as you rinse right away the paint should come out. Maybe easier?

I actually use some of these papers in my large class Collage Joy that opens in January 2025. Other than that, I've shown how to combine 5 types of papers together in four separate videos. These would give you an idea of what I would do with aluminum paper.

How are you using these in collage? (Are you just gluing it onto paper with a medium or PVA glue?
Yes gluing them with matte medium.
Do you have examples showing them used in collage ?
I posted a reel to Instagram several days ago that has this type of paper in it. Go to my account @catrains.artist and look for the reel before the last one. The redish piece of collage paper is foil.

If a light coat of joint compound was spread on the backside of the foil relief, would that keep the texture from flattening? Also, would very lightly sanding the relief bring out the shine of the foil?
Both are great suggestions, and techniques I haven't yet tried. How about you do it and let us all know how it works!?

Do you ever show how you use the wonderful papers/paints etc in a collage?
Yes! After I have taught 5 different types of collage papers, I show how to put those 5 together into one collage. I'm now on my 4th paper out of 5, and will be making a collage with all 5 very soon. Until then, I've already done this 4 times, so you can go back into my video library to view the other times I have done this.
It might be interesting to try repousse' on soft metals where you could "draw" your own design.

Brilliant thankyou. Is that tissue paper that you blotted the blue paint over the foil - normal tissue? How did it not tear?
Yes it's "normal" tissue, as in gift grade. What you wrap gifts with. I'm just very careful as I lift it and lay it out to dry.

U could use up old texture paste on the back to keep dimension.
It holds the dimension rather well, but texture paste would certainly make it even sturdier.
I had so much fun making this paper. May I ask what you used to seal them when they are done? I did not see it in the supplies list.
So glad that you enjoyed making this paper! Me too. I sealed them with matte medium.
Possibly fold the light weight foil to make a stronger sheet?
You could, but then you are using twice to amount of aluminum foil. Might as well use heavy duty aluminum foil instead!
What do you use to take the shine away and to create the matte finish? Is it matte gel medium?
I usually use a matte medium, and a gel matte is fine too. If you use the dull side of the foil, it also gets less shine.

I'm using acrylic paint. My fave is from Nova.
Have you tried a mister bottle that doesn't blop out the water??
Yes, I have a mister, but I didn't own one when I made this video! I do like a mister better as well.
Do you use glue or medium to stick foil down. Does it adhere okay?
I use medium as my glue, and yes it adheres great.

When you add so much water to the acrylic, the binder is weakened. . . It needs top-sealant or it may flake off.

What's best way to apply the foil pieces to your collage to make it adhere well?

I apply mine with gel or matte medium. I'm thrilled that you are giving these a try!
Can I use acrylic paint on the tinfoil?
Yes! Its what I used.
I have a lung problem also . I only smoked 2 months when I was a teenager but decided I was spending money for something I didn't like . But I understand how careful we have to be . Good luck .

Using a wider brush to dry brush would help.

I don-t have embossing folders, but i'll try foil on a rubber stamp. Perhaps pounce foil with a stiff brush.

I didn't actually use this paper in a collage. All the videos dated May 5, 2023 and after, however, are in 3 videos showing how to make collages with 5 types of paper each.
I looked up Carol Nelson, but did not see any aluminum foil in collage. Also, did she pass away ?
She is still alive, and sometimes includes this paper in her work.
I would like a wider view.

if you use alcohol ink, you wont need to seal... and those inks are extremely fun and addictive!

Looks a mess to be honest
I appreciate your honesty. Much of collage paper making is about making a big mess, until you discover something spectral at the end. I use many of these papers in my collage work.
