What I *REALLY* want you to teach me... . . . . . . . . . . . . . Is *HOW ON EARTH* you keep your craft space so clean? 😫 Hmmm... I really liked the look of that second crackle product in the jar, it looked like it was super glossy and quality, much better than the first...but I don't think the results were as good. Obviously you used a ton of products to make super chunky crackles, but both were a little bit disappointing that they could just drop off the paper. Yes you managed to fix that, but you shouldn't have had to do that imo. I would expect better results from such products. Maybe they work better on furniture perhaps? Solid wood that can't stretch and shrink like paper? But then these are not sold for home decor, although many people use them for such, they are sold for artists, so what surface are MOST artists going to paint on if not paper...🙄 Still it's great that we get to see them at work on screen so we can be aware of results, I do appreciate that. But both companies should appreciate *YOU,* because as an artist you managed to make their products look like they WEREN'T an expensive waste of time. If someone with an ordinary crafting channel had demonstrated them, I think they'd have looked like a complete fail. I've always been a silver person, always wear silver jewellery and not a fan of gold, plus I'm allergic to gold. But recently I've become mesmerised by crafting projects using proper iridescent mouthwatering shades of gold. So I HAVE TO ASK, what is that brand of gold paint that you used? That intensity of colour was so deep and pure, it literally looked like you were spreading on molten metal. 🤩 I NEED that gold paint in my life! My favourite pieces you made were the gold and blues, and the silver and blues. Again that silver paint also had a true metallic sheen to it, although not as much as the gold or as pretty, but it was there. I think many metallic paints look glorious in the tubes, but are disappointing in reality. Very thin and more glittery than metal. So I need your best recommendations for gold and silver paints please. Not spray paints either, but artist paints that can be mixed with water. On that note, I don't have any alcohol inks yet, but I didn't know you could spritz them with water and mop them up like that??? That's a new realisation for me. I would have thought they were permanent and dried super fast...like a Sharpie. They have alcohol inks in right? So it's kind of odd to me that you're able to do that... something's not computing in the science area of my brain with that! 😂 Although it's been that many years since school that doesn't surprise me! My brain's science area is probably the size of a mouldy old shrivelled peanut by now! 🤣 Ooh and one last recommendation if you don't mind...what is the WHITEIST pen that you know of? I have a Pental brand one and it's more like a chalk pen IMO. Not very opaque and the more you go over it the more it removes of the previous layer, very annoying. Then I bought a Posca brand one as I've heard so many people rave about Posca pens, and I have to say I'm not sure why people rave about them? It's just a paint pen, right? The problem I find with paint pens is that the paint flow is unpredictable. They're either dry and scratchy, or flooding without warning. I shake the hell out of them and push the nibs as instructed, but the flow...just doesn't. Flow I mean. So if you could please recommend gold and silver paints, and the whiteist pen ever, I'd really appreciate it! I want it so white, that brands are competing over it being the whiteist ever...like those two guys did a few years back over the blackest paint in the world. 😂 Thank you for sharing. 🤗

Another fun thing to try!!!! Thank you, Cat! LOVE IT!
Thank you dear Mary! I love that you watch my videos.
Lovely!
Thanks so much!
The straw one was very cool❣️❣️
I loved the straws too, especially that different size straws create different marks.
Wonderful to learn new ways to use teabags. I've used them before as part of a cluster on mixed media, but haven't stamped them before. Thank you.
So glad that you found this video helpful!
Catherine, I always enjoy your mark making videos.
Thanks for letting me know that you found this useful for your art practice!
Catherine, thank you for the inspiration. I need know I have straws somewhere! x
I did a major search for straws around my home as well, as was thrilled to find TWO types. I didn't think I had any! Enjoy making these intriguing papers!
Great video and ideas! I love using the cardboard filler pieces with the honeycomb pattern on my gel plate but had never thought to wrap string around it. Going to go make one now! What type of black paper are you using? It’s so vibrant. I’ve been struggling trying to find a suitable black.
So glad you found this video useful. The link to the black paper I used in under the word MORE in the video description.
So confused yiu say glue then matte medium. . Help
Matte medium can be used for many things, and one of them is glue. It's like a white glue, but thinner and more clear. It you look for matte medium in Amazon, you will find many options. Does that help?
I love your willingness to play, Catherine, thank you!
What a kind thing to say. Yes, play is essential when making papers!
You didnt say what kind of paint. Acrylic or watercolor.
Sorry I didn't say that. Always acrylic for me.
Nice! Thanks for the info about matte medium and parchment paper when flattening it. I did not know they wouldn't just stick together!
Glad you found that tip helpful. Really is a game changer when using crackle on old collage papers!
My kids laugh at me because every time I go to their house I find some "trash" that will make cool marks!! 😂
😂same my daughter calls me crow mother
Too funny Teresa! Then the question is where to store all the "art mark making" trash!??!
I love the straw techniques and the string wrap technique -both new to me.
New to me too! Amazing what you can come up with from around our homes.
Very cool, Catherine ~ I've tried various crackle mediums and found my favorites to be TriArt and Kroma. Sealing them with Matte Medium is a great tip; I always had trouble with the crackle lifting when I tried adding inks or very fluid paints so this is a HUGE tip....I'm also going to try placing a 'crackled' paper on top of some dark, wet inks, as I quite liked the effect you accidentally got from the dried black paint seeping through the back of that one paper ~ it could produce some additional interesting effects. Thanks!! 🥰
I'm so glad that you got a couple new ideas from this demo. I love these two crackles the best too, although I've tried many. Happy art accidents are the best!
I am not patient enough to do this technique.. ha ha.. but I can't wait to see how you use them in your collages
It does take patience for sure, many days of patience.I'm showing how I used them in a collage in my next video!
Wow, very cool. But, I would be harvesting a lot of the crackles that aren't adhered to use as embellishments, especially those beautiful gold ones! They just look so cute and would be unusual in a collage.
So glad you were inspired to use this technique in different ways. My next video shows how to use crackle in a collage!
This was helpful on so many levels for me - seeing how the matte medium vs gel work, layout ideas and the various techniques you taught for me, a behinner. Thank you so much!
I'm thrilled that you found this video so helpful! Thanks for letting me know.
have you tried dropping some colored alcohol ink on them?
I don't think I have, but sounds like an experiment waiting to happen!
So pretty...what paper is best to use?
I tried this with old collage papers that I didn't like. So it was all types of papers. However if you want to use crackle on plain paper, I would use this on a heavier paper like mixed media or bristol. Also helpful if you add a layer of gloss medium on the paper before the crackle, although I didn't say this in the video.
Ecologically, you do NOT want to be rinsing the toxic chemicals in paint, down the drain. . . Do you have ANY idea where it ends up?! It’s far better to clean up paint with cloth/paper towels, and send them to the land-fill! Though it IS the lesser of two evils. . . .
Totally agree with you! I actually have a video here that talks about that very thing.
Exceptional tutorial really level the crackle. Do you think you can crackle on tea paper?
Thanks Deb. It's possible, although I haven't tried it. If you do it, I would put a layer of gloss medium on both sides of the paper first. Let me know what happens!
Great workshop…so fun👌🏻
Awww thank you Jannette.
Great workshop✌🏼
Thanks so much Jannette!
Thank you SO much for doing this demo for us. You have so many great ideas and your videos are inspirational
Thank YOU for watching and for the very kind words.
belle carte! ❤❤
Thank you!
So cool. ❤❤❤
Awww thanks!
Fabulous vid Catherine!!
Thanks so very much Trish!
Thank you!😊 I have been feeling blah and out of sorts, but watching this video has perked me up a bit; I may not be emulating Gene Kelly and singing in the rain, I am definitely grateful for Rains! Apologies for the pun..
You are soooo adorable. Glad this video could bring some sun into your life (pun intended!).
Hi Cat. Thanks for another very cool idea! I’m wondering if you could add matte medium on the back side of your warped paper to help relax the paper and flatten it out. It seems like it would still help adhere the crackle to the paper without filling the cracks with the matte medium. Do you think this idea would work?
Yes that could work. Try it and let me know!
Very interesting results again. I'm looking forward to seeing your collages. Did you consider taping the paper to a board before adding crackle medium?
Glad you enjoyed the demo. Taping to a board is an excellent option, although the paper would probably still curl after the paper is pulled up.
Interesting. I have played with crackle, but haven't enjoyed the results. May pull them back out and experiment again. Thank you!
I find that for many of the papers I make it takes a few tries before I really like using a certain technique. Certainly true for crackle as each product works so differently. Have fun experimenting!
Muito triste porque no meu país não encontro esses produtos para comprar. Preciso descobrir algo para substituí-los. Mas obrigada pela dica.
Can you buy Golden or Deco Art? Both of these are also good, just do different things.
Crackle is so much fun, isn't it? I love Tri-Art Crackle. I also hear that Fusion Mineral Paint crackle is good. I like to tape my paper down to a piece of acrylic and then prep it with a coat of GAC 200 (gloss medium works, too). I find that this reduces the curling of the paper and really helps with adhesion. I love your addition of the gold. It's so pretty!
What a fabulous idea - will have to try coating my paper first. Great suggestion. Thanks for adding to my product knowledge!
@@catrains.artist You're welcome. Let us know if this works for you.
Perfect timing. I had ordered Tri Art the other day and it arrives tomorrow! Beautiful papers, especially love the one with alcohol inks.
This is good timing. Tri Art is such a fun way to make collage papers. Enjoy!
I LOVE your videos.
You are very kind Maryann. Thank you!
Hi Catherine, I LOVE your videos. Could you do one that shows how you organize and store your collage papers? My small studio is completely overrun by all sorts of collage papers.
Awww thank you Maryann! I actually have done a video recently on how to organize your studio which includes how I store my papers. Look for the one that says "13 ways...." If that doesn't help, respond with what else specifically you'd like to know and I'm glad to help.
Cool video! Thanks so much! FYI alcohol ink doesn’t get old. Maybe try spraying with isopropyl alcohol? 🧐
Glad you enjoyed the demo. Good to know about alcohol ink - I'll try what you suggest.
That gold and blue one!❤
I know, that was my fave too! It took forever to dry, at least 4 days.
The free online workshop is very interesting and fun!
So glad that you enjoyed it!
COOL. I love mixed medium. Is there a way to do this with personal photos? Maybe coping photos onto paper and using that as the bas
Yes you can do something very similar using photocopies. Won't have the same layered affect as this, but copies are great image transfers.
Excited to see another of your videos
Thanks so much! I'd be honored to have you watch more.
I'm wondering...Do you add anything to the paint to thin it out?
I'm using Nova brand paint which is like a soft body, and already thinner in nature. So no I don't thin my paint out, used right out of the jar!
What about a long cake iceing tool?
Sounds like a great tool for this. Worth trying!
Many years ago, a gallery owner told me he used coffee in one of his paintings, and that as years went by, creatures - rodents? cockroaches? - ate through it. Something to think about. Will the coffee attract varmints? Does it matter if the art lasts for decades?
Very good point. Since I use a lot of materials in my art that might not be archival (like coffee), I take special care of add lots of coats of matte medium, varnish and wax to thoroughly seal the work from such things happening. Always possible that it still could, but I've never seen it happen yet.
