      Lovely video, presented the pros and cons of both in a good manner! I personally prefer the Sony for it's colour science and manual controls.
      In the video you mentioned speaking to a Sony Rep about brightness, that's definitely an area that needs development.
      Could you also pass on a few comments from my end regarding the cameras:
      1) It would be nice to see pinch to zoom in and out in cinema pro app even if it is optical zoom, although preferabbly being able to switch lenses whilst recording would be great.
      2) There should be an automatic mode for cinema pro that changes settings whilst recording, so when transitiong from indoors to outdoors video doesn't have to be stopped, settings changed etc, because you can miss a moment when changing settings. That or better HDR, so outdoors isn't over exposed when walking outside, same when transitioning from outdoors to indoors.
      3) Addition of Time-Lapse feature that could be tied into an integrated video editor or something.
      4) Inclusion of S-Cinetone in Cinema Pro app.
      5) Better AI smarts and software rendering in main camera app, alongside a night mode.
      Everything else just blows me away, being the first smartphone to record 4K 120fps slow motion, 20fps burst shot, etc etc.

      @jc31312jch 3 ปีที่แล้ว +51

      I would still choose Xperia 1 mark ii. The cinema pro is my favorite feature, also non of the brands in the market able to beat it, for now.
      Photo Pro will require some time to do the adjustment, also require you to dive into basics of photography in order to take good photo. But if you think from another perspective, you are actually learning how to use a DSLR when you are learning Photo Pro app.
      I really wish Sony default camera app's quality can be at least like Iphone 2018 and 2019 models. Sony has been struggle to improve it for many years, I did see the improvement from time to time, but it's still not good enough to catch up with the race...
      PS: English is not my mother tongue; please excuse any errors on my part.

    • @JamesLavish
      @JamesLavish  3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Hey Jackson, exactly what I wanted to show....if you want to learn photography or really like tinkering with the controls, then you will love this Xperia. And yes, the AI, Computational Photography is leaps ahead with the iPhone at this point. We will see if Sony focuses on closing that gap in this next year! Thanks for the thoughtful comment, and your English is great! Cheers!

      Thanks so much, Zagham, I really appreciate that. I agree on 1, yes on 2, or maybe a digital auto-variable ND filter? 3,4,5, totally, and also I would like to have a bracketing mode for the Photo Pro side, as well. Will definitely pass along. Thanks so much for the input!

      I have the Xperia 1 II, but I haven't tried the 12, but I can already tell you that Sony's Pro apps can't be beat since they're straight off of Alpha. I can take great photos and videos, but the 12 is for the average point and shoot person that doesn't bother with manual controls.

    Brilliant and very informative comparison, this covered so much of what I wanted to know. Having had a Sony alpha camera before, I think I'm more attracted to the Xperia over the iPhone. That extra layer of manual adjustment and capability is what tips the scales in favour of the Xperia. However, the iPhone is obviously no slouch at all and I can see how it would be a better match for someone who perhaps hadn't had experience with alpha cameras and didn't want to spend time editing or adjusting. Thanks for the great video - a happy new subscriber.

    19:58 This is the highlight for the capabilities of the Xperia for everyday use for sure. The colors, the shadows on the grass, the focus on Zoie.. absolutely amazing. The iPhone image in this case just hurts to look at, the grass is way too bright and sharp.
    Many images from the iPhone will look better for the majority of people just because the images are made to be dramatic, artificially perfected as opposed to just realistic - or what you want it too look if you change your settings ofc but you don't have real access to that in the iPhone. This is where the "easy mode" for the to be released Xperia 1III or 5III comes in.. The pro app will get optional computational imaging and auto settings tools. If Sony can manage the software.. they will have the best of both worlds. The variable telephoto lens will also be something to look out for.

    Great video James. What I was wondering is if the results with pro app can be achieved without having to use lightroom. For example the one from 9:19 can be obtain straight from the camera? And if so what settings can you use?

    • @JamesLavish
      @JamesLavish  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Maru, thank you! If I turned on full HDR in the Photo Pro, it would be closer to that, but images from the Photo Pro app come out a bit flatter than the iPhone, for sure, so some adjustment to the exposure is necessary to achieve the iPhone level of contrast. FYI!

    You mentioned curve adjustment, I think, in the Photo pro app - what do you mean by that?

    • @JamesLavish
      @JamesLavish  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks so much Bennie, I really appreciate that and am glad it helped! The curves adjustment can be made in Snapseed or Lightroom ... it is the Curves Tab and you just make that line into a very shallow S shape by pulling the left (darks) slightly lower and pushing the right (lights) slightly higher...just a touch, not too much. And this creates contrast. I will cover this in my 2nd Lightroom video, coming soon...🙏✌

    Finally a real comparison highlighting the strenghts of both smartphones. AI in iPhone and Pixel 5 is truly amazing, however I am a bit tired of these pics with that exaggerated sharpness and looking overly dramatic (like all the sunsets on IG look like an asteroid is about to hit the Earth). They are very good only for social media. I come from a Samsung S10 and although I took some pretty epic pics, sometimes they really look unnatural. Also the sharpness on portrait is awful, you can see wrinkles that are invisible in real life and makes you look older (a bit like the selfie with iPhone 12 Pro in your video, seen similar result with Pixel). Just got my Sony Xperia 5 II, the phone is really good and battery is incredible. The camera in auto is a bit of hit and miss, but looking at your pictures the results you can get look much more close to my personal preferences, although I have to give credit to Apple and Google for their auto mode, it is incredible what you can get just by pointing and shooting, I do wish Sony was a bit better on that one. Also got my Sony Xperia 5 II for 530£ which is about half the price of an iPhone 12 Pro in the UK, that is something to consider as well. Thanks for the review, subscribed!

    • @JamesLavish
      @JamesLavish  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks so much, Stefano. Yes, I agree on the selfies with the iPhone and Pixel. Too crispy for me. Not sure why they do that. And yes on the out of this world drama with some of the photos on IG, etc. Try using the DRO optimizer option with Photo Pro...expose for the brightest part of the image without blowing it out (watching the histogram) and the results should match mine. That 5ii is a great phone and a steal for that price! Thanks for the thoughtful comment and keep on! 🙏✌
