      I think that day is almost here. I mean popping Moment lenses on newer iPhones has been making photos virtually indistinguishable from DSLR’s to the layman for years now. My friend even takes gorgeous Astro-photography through a telescope that connects to her iPhone camera 📸

    Nice video James! ProRAW brings the heat with detail and exposure but still lags behind large sensors in colors. Your tunnel example was a great showcase of this. The scene at the end of the tunnel looked more vibrant on the full frame. I see a similar hybrid world where large sensor cameras are still relevant but it will be a smaller playing field with camera companies that adopted computational photography techniques.

    • @JamesLavish
      @JamesLavish  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Supreet! Thanks so much, man! I agree on the capabilities of the sensors...the edge is clearly still with the full frame for the whole package, but the AI and CP is catching up FAST! How's the vid-life??? You've got some great ones recently! ✌

    It's physics, professional camera got bigger sensor and better lenses, so I'm not surprised if it takes better images overall.
    But man, this computational photography really pushes this thing further. It's not that much of a difference if you compared with the pro camera images. Makes people prefer to use the phone more instead of the camera.
    It's smaller, lighter, and efficient. You can edit directly on the phone itself. I think with bigger sensor, better lenses, and more advanced computational photography, phone camera will replace pro camera, if the camera company don't do anything about it.
    Great video man, got subbed.

    How does ProRAW compare to just normal RAW files from Sony xperia 1 II or 5 II?

    • @JamesLavish
      @JamesLavish  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The iPhone has a higher dynamic range vs the Xperia, no surprise, with the embedded AI and instant stacking of exposures to make a single shot...but that does not mean the Xperia doesn't hold its own. As we've seen some of my other videos, you can get some awesome photos with these Sony Xperia sensors...

And in a couple of photos it actually looks better than the Sony like for example the tunnel. Though I have neither of those phones, I have seen the Huawei Mate 40 at CES and it's seriously impressive. Don't fall for the 108MP sensor marketing, though. It is the size of the sensor and size of the pixels that matters...108MP means nothing with such small pixels to fit on that sensor. The 12MP Google Cameras blow that out of the water... IMO!!! If I get the chance I will test either one though!

    I really think camera companies have taken these notes. Look at what SONY and Canon have been fighting each other with: HDR performance. That's the newest in computational photography, SONY even matching some of their lower grade cinema cameras with the A7Siii

    • @JamesLavish

    Doesn't this outrule long exposures?
    That would make it useless for landscape photographers.

    • @JamesLavish
      @JamesLavish  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can use third party software for manual modes...and add an ND filter (with the right camera case) and this can be done.

    • @fto5935
      @fto5935 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JamesLavish
      I was referring to the HDR stack. In a long exposure (via 3. party app) you lose the advantage of computational photography. You make it seem as if HDR compositing can replace a high DR sensor. But that only works for very short exposures. Or does it also perform frame-averaging long exposure simulation?

    • @JamesLavish
      @JamesLavish  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@fto5935 I see, yes that's an excellent point. And no I am not aware of the ability to get ProRAW with a third party app yet...but if you put an ND filter on, you would effectively trick the sensor into a longer exposure, so you it can be done but without total control, as you say. And no, the sensor is still too small to fully compete with the full frame sensors (as you saw) but software is becoming super powerful in these phones and pushing camera makers to innovate (see the Sony a1 announced yesterday...)

    • @fto5935
      @fto5935 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JamesLavish
      You don't get it. The HDR won't be available with long exposures. So if you could trick the iphone into long exposures you would automaticaly trick it out of the HDR mode. The stack excludes by principle any photo with motion blur.

  • @foxypete5332
    @foxypete5332 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The comparison is strange 😉 You compare shoots in bracket mode of the iPhone with single shots of the Sony.
    If you put the Sony in bracket mode you get a dynamic range the iPhone cannot compete with.
    Iphone for travel and ebay. The pro camera for anything else ☺️

    • @JamesLavish
      @JamesLavish  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Foxy Pete, that was kind of the point, you would have to bracket and process each shot out of the Sony for similar dynamic range of the iPhone. If you do that, the Sony still crushes the iPhone because of the full frame sensor. But like you just said, convenience for trips, travel, family, etc. is great with the iPhone for those of us who want to take some photos without having to process even more than we already do!

      Great question. The 12 series has a little bit better performance in the ultra-wide lens, a bigger sensor, and LiDar laser for depth of field mapping and low light focusing. The HDR is improved also, among a few other things. But honestly, the 11 is still a fantastic phone for photography and if you are mainly using the main lens and video with controlled lighting, you would not see a difference, IMO!

    All that R&D that goes into this tech, and I'd bet that hardly anybody who buys an iPhone is going to spend any time in lightroom, most of the time they'll be looking at 2x2inch snaps on instagram. You choose iOS because you like the dumbed-down experience.
    My Canon DSLR I bought a couple of years ago has an HDR mode, where it stacks 3 images together - albeit nowhere near as fast as the iPhone and in jpeg, but it gets pretty good results when pointing an shooting, so it is kind of out there already.
