The Sony Xperia 1 ii will be shipping next month and is one of the top camera systems I've used on any phone to date. Designed by Sony Alpha, it feels much like the mirrorless cameras Sony is known for.
In this video I want to talk specifically about the cameras and the camera applications that ship with this phone. We have an ultra-wide angle 16mm lens, a standard 24mm lens and a portrait-length 70mm lens. You can access the cameras for both stills and video using the basic camera app. There are also 2 dedicated apps for stills and video - the PhotoPro and the CinemaPro respectively.
I'm super excited about this phone from a photography perspective and want to go through all of the functionality that you get on this device.

I really liked when you compared the smartphone pictures against a DSLR. Perhaps from my science background, I appreciate seeing the DSLR picture as a theoretical standard. I think it's helpful when the viewer can't see what the actual scene looked like. In terms of smartphone comparisons, I'd like to see the Xperia go against the Iphone, P40 Pro, and to a lesser extent the Samsung phones.

Great video. Great capabilities in a camera not found on others. This video for people who knows about cameras and photography. For those who are asking for specs comparison or comparing with other phones, there are other videos out there. This phone has features that no other phones has. For example it can shoot 20fps and Eye focus (inclduing animal eye). This allows you to take moving or sports picture with great focus and 20 frames per second and the pictures will be sharp. You will never miss a moment. This is because this 1 ii uses a new dual pixel autofocus sensor (even though it's only 12 MPa). You cannot do this with samsung, apple or others. All other phones just uses the older technology dual phase AF sensors. Samsung S20 ultra has 108Mpa which is good if you want to take static pictures of your food, scenery, etc. But it also suffers from poor autofocus where your shots will be blurry. If you know about photography, this phone is for you.

Hi! Thank you for a great video! Big fan of the channel. In terms of comparison, can you maybe do, landscape, human portrait and moving subject? I’m really interested in seeing how what Sony can do in terms of dynamic range and how it handles contrasting scenes ( quite a few reviewers mentioned that highlights get blown out quite often. I’m also interested in how it does in terms of details, I’m a big fan of the natural approach they are taking with minimal computerisation, so it would be great to see how human skin looks, as many phones just blur it out. And of course your workflow with this phone and how you envision it’s going to change after Sony gets the raw support. Once again thank you for the video and keep up the good work!

Before last year, Sony's Mobile Imaging Division is barely helped by their proper Sony Alpha Division, yet their cameras always have been keeping up with the competition.
Last year was the first try of their collaboration, and it was successful for the most part. This year, they just brought things up even further and we can see the pay-off with this phenomenal camera setup.
Forget the media who knows nothing about photography than just merely clicking the shutter button. The professional photographers themselves are far more impressed than anyone else, and definitely they're the ones who should be trusted when it comes to reviewing this phone's camera capabilities and not those biased and paid platforms.

Their Auto Mode is set to deliver the same natural images as they do on the Photo Pro app, but with all settings controlled automatically by the phone.
Samsung, Google and Apple basically taught everyone to be lazy mofos and made them believe that overprocessed images always look better.
Worst yet, they compare their precious phones to an A7III and concludes that their phones are better just because of better dynamic range (which is mostly done by software enhancement and not the camera's true potential).
You know who's talking bullshit when a real photographer highly praises this phone's imaging capabilities while the popular media talks crap about it.

I think a camera comparison of the strengths and weaknesses of the Sony Experia 1 ii vs apple/google/samsung would be nice to see. All these other companies have phones that are heavy in computational photography so things like HDR and high dynamic range situations look really good. However, the new Experia 1 ii seems to be a throwback to a traditional camera experience. Things like high FPS, fast autofocus, and long exposures are the hallmarks of that experience. I would love to see someone who is well versed in photography, actually use these parameters to show what this camera phone can do.

If you called me and Sony fanboys I wouldn't deny it. I pre-ordered this phone through B&H and this will be my fourth Sony phone. I have always bought form over function, in other words, I prefer a bigger phone and I have gotten the XA ultra series phones from Sony. While these phones may have larger megapixel photo sensors, I can say that it doesn't guarantee a good photo. You may want to talk about the sensor it's self, as to the quality versus the larger megapixel sensors that are in other phones. Just a thought. Thanks for a nother great video.

Phone is great, but I've seen noticeable pin cushion distortion on GSMarena's camera samples of the main lens and also noticeable on DPreviews's sample gallery. It's not super noticeable in normal/close up shots, but once you know it's there, it definitely nags at you. The issue here is that Sony went with an equivalent 24mm on the main lens (as opposed to 26mm on the previous generation). The distortion is on the main lens and I think it comes from the lens itself, but the 24mm focal length definitely doesn't help the situation. It's so bad that you can see the edge of buildings bulged as a bow. The problem is that Sony has distortion correction only on the ultra wide lens, and not on the main one in the camera settings, so there is no way to circumvent this thing, save for post processing. Perhaps something to look at in your comparison video would be distortion of building edges vs other flagships.

    - Bokeh effect comparison using the portrait lenses (NOT the standard ~24mm lens).
    - Night photos (noise, dynamic range, retained details) on all three lenses, but especially the wide angle.
    - Dynamic range of all three cameras versus the competition, but especially the wide angle.
    - Higher ISO performance and continuous AF performance of the telephoto lens.

Hard to compare the three lenses dynamic range with the competition because is really hard to find the three lenses with manual mode on the market, most of the manufacturers restrict secondary lenses to auto mode, and obviously the use HDR aggressively, in Sony's case is disable by default and is less aggressive.
A real dynamic range comparison should be with HDR off on every lens and phones.

P30, iphone 11 pro, S20 Ultra, is a good line up, if you can get a P40 as well, as they, as well as the S20U has a slightly bigger sensor on their camera, you can do an up and down on how well they harness those big sensor (like with the S20U being unable to properly focus with such tight bokeh, etc)
another addition the dark horse Oneplus 8, they actually have a pretty impressive sensor under it now, seeing how it's gonna be the cheapest in the lineup (not counting Huaweis, as really, buying them now is just bad decision).
Id like to not only hear image quality impression on different condition in auto, but also how well they can cope with human input (whether use native or 3rd party app) its important to add manual comparison as that's a new look Into them not many people dive that far, most just stuck on doing auto review and that's kinda a shame. the experience in picture taking would be nice as well.

Just a few years ago if someone asked me if phones had surpassed point and shoot, I would tell them they are drunk its not possible, but today phones FINALLY are on par with point and shoot cameras the only thing phones still cannot really beat are compact cameras with one inch sensors but frankly for the avg joe he wont care and I am surprised myself how versatile phones have become in the camera department.
The thing I always look for in a camera is not specs, but how the images turn out, I really love colour science in Samsung NX1 and I find it really sad that Samsung just cannot reproduce that into their phones, and very few phones actually have "nice" images its always just been digital garble but Sony Xperia 1 II actually shoots amazingly pleasant looking images, some of the Chinese phones like Xiaomi and Huawei are not that far behind either, at the end of the day the people viewing the images are not counting pixels or dynamic range, they are looking at HOW nice the image look, colour is a big part of it if it is in colour but too sharp and it looks digital and too soft it looses details, you just want something in the middle that looks pleasing.
Its always been hard for me to find such in a phone its always been the compact cameras and some point and shoot, but damn are phone manufacturers catching up. (Yes I know you can shoot RAW in many phones in the past and adjust the image, not my point)

I think there should have been a shutter button on the screen in pro mode. It woudn't have costed them anything more than some pride/or PR. Pressing a physical button may introduce shakes in some low ISO low light shots if you're going for a 0.2/0.1 sec shutter speed.
