One of the big complaints from vloggers is the minimum focus distance. If you don't use a self stick to get the camera farther away and hold it at arm length your face will be soft. Some argue that the focus should be set father away since action cameras are intended to film the outdoor landscape your'e in. The other complaint is you can't add a ND filter for slower shutter speeds that give natural motion blur. Finally it was revealed recently Insta was encouraging TH-cam influencers not to disclose their relationship with Insta (either receiving the camera for free or paid to promote it.) This bothers me the most. Otherwise it's a fine camera and you make a great review video. One other note both DJI and Insta use the same sensor, Insta uses different and better processing.
Not sure where you’re getting your information but I use an ND filter in mine all the time. Neewer makes a set and there is also an adapter that allows you to put a regular 49mm filter on them. Using the adapter lets you put a magnification filter on it that allows closer focusing distance.
If using whilst sea kayaking, the camera is going to be splashed by salt water then dry out, until a dunking and drying later in the day. How does the hinge facility look like it would cope with any salt build up? Thanks
People said that when you try to make vlogs using this it always goes out of focus, have to use macro lens so that the video from 2-2.5 feet away remains in focus, is this true, why you didn't talk about it..?
Im so used to gopro, again had it since 8 and used ther door to plug it into power bank for dash cam on my bike, very good in even very heavy rain... does ace pro have this or third party have it?
I tried both but DJI Action 4 has won because during trailrunning I mostly hold the cam in my hand but then the Ace Pro cannot focus on me but only behind me. On the Action 4 I am crystal clear. The focus point at the Ace Pro is too far away for me (I am 190cm tall, I do not have tiny arms^^)
Yes that is a good point, this looks best using a selfie stick. I found the narrower FOV means it needs one anyway. Personally I'd also use the action 4 if I was trail running as the wider FOV suits the sport better I think. Downside of course is the Action 4 feels a bit wide for casual vlogging and the Linear mode is significantly compromised in quality. No perfect camera yet!
Could you add in future reviews whether the cameras have audio in and clean hdmi out connections? I’m always on the hunt for the most versatile camera which would offer me the most options, for outdoor shoots and compatible with my live streaming gear. Thanks
I am currently looking for another camera. I am a photographer but also a mum of 2 small kids and a dog and we go campervanning regularly. Ive just started to make and edit home movies all the time for my kids to one day look back on and I’ve been using the insta360 GO3. But been wanting the DJI osmo pocket because I vlog to the camera for context and story telling purposes. But I’m starting to think the Ace Pro might be better option for me. It’s not as sexy, but I think I’m taking for granted various action cam features. With 2 small kids and a dog - out in all kids of weather, a waterproof and robust camera is needed. I think over time using a non-waterproof mechanical gimbal camera will end up in the bag more than I’d like to admit - despite it having more cinematic qualities, it’s not very robust. I’ve dropped my GO 3 many times, we’re out in the rain my kids like to “have a go” with the camera, and I need to be able to get it out with 1 hand (other hand is either holding onto a child or a dog lead). I was looking at go pros for a while as using a stiff flippy screen can be annoying, but being able to get low shots whilst seeing the screen is soo helpful, so I’ve now eliminated the Go Pro. I’m filming my kids run around, cycling, playing, swimming etc so whilst we are not extreme sporting an action camera stabilisation is perfect for me (albeit it’s always set to low or standard). So hard to decide when there is so much choice!!
I have both go3 and ace pro, for fun versatile storytelling shots Id say go3...if you're doing more and longer say rugged travel and talking head footage then ace pro. Go3 is very good at being all in one, acepro you'll find yourself wanting to spend a lot of accessories...for better or for worse.
@@GetawayAF thanks for replying ☺️ good point, I didn’t really think about what extra accessories I’d need. What kind of accessories do you think I’d end up needing if I got the ace pro? @@stevestechemporium, There’s always two sides of every story. It seems these YT’ers didn’t share why there was a fall out which is never pretty. Great review sir...This is the most in-depth review of the Insta360 Ace Pro that I’ve seen. You’ve covered everything I wanted to know about the camera...I love the Insta360 One RS remote watch! You are the king of camera reviews! We got one of this cameras but I have problems with some of the settings. It makes me look old... Little to much contrast. I compare it with a GoPro that I don't like at all. The color of the GoPro is to much fake. The insta360 is way much better if we look at the colors and the skills in the low lights. Probably we will sell the GoPro and swap so we got to Insta360... and then figure out the settings or just accept that I get older... / Matti in Jokkmokk
I would try shooting with the flat colour profile, perhaps reduce the sharpness, or even turn off the HDR video and see if that helps. There's always a compromise with action cameras. I find a bit of experimenting with settings is always required.
Ya that crap about moisture in the lens is all lies. The pre production model had a removable cover. And so does the current model. They literally added the smallest dab of epoxy on the locking mechanism under the cover to make it feel like you cant remove it. It does nothing to keep moisture out. To keep moisture out it has a o ring around the housing like every other company does. Uf they replace it all they are gonna do is exactly what you could do if they gave you the part. Difference is after a year when your out of warranty they will tell you its gonna cost a stupid amount to fix the cover and point you to spend money on a completely new unit. Tbh its a terrible business strategy especially when the other companies add the same features with the removable cover and then everyone just switches to them.
A question about the Mic and upgrade on the softeware? Can the camera also work with other wireless mics? say for instance the Hollyland? Good review though.
Dear Steve, On the 4:30 you are showing a daylight; and on the 4:45 you are showing a lowlight comparison between Insta360 Ace Pro and DJI Osmo Action 4. I strongly dissagree with your conslusions. You are severly out of focus on the daylight image on Ace Pro. The same goes for the night image, where every letter is clean and clear on the Action 4 without being oversharped, and wobbly and unlean on the Ace Pro. Therefore I consider you either a madman or a blatant shill to call Insta360 Ace Pro a winner in these scenarios. I really enjoyed the statments in the other chapters, you gave really strong and appealing points, but they are tainted in desbelief for me due to the prior reasoning
How long can it record for continuously? Something I never realised until a few months ago was that you can only record for up to 29-30 minutes continuously on insta360 cameras. At least on the one rs and x3. From what I could find out insta360 wouldn't pay a licence fee to class it as a video camera. It put me off looking at the ace because I like to use my gopro to record drives or put it on a bag mount to record a hike, so dont want it skipping every half hour.
Steve! What about ye mate? Jonny here, it's lovely to (sort of) meet you. I've just bought one of these today to help film my first ever documentary for my YT channel. I'm from Toronto, but I've been living in N.I. for about fifteen years. I've just subbed to your channel and I'll be checking out more of your stuff through the week. Have you by chance done any content on settings for these Ace Pros0 yet? Great video, very thorough 🖐😀
It is not an action camera. It is a vlogging camera. Action cameras do not have a flip up screen. I would rather have the screen on the front of the camera.
I do think it's more geared towards vlogging but it's definitely an action camera. Waterproof, fixed wide angle lens, shock resistant etc. but the definitions are becoming blurred these days.
People said that when you try to make vlogs using this it always goes out of focus, have to use macro lens so that the video from 2-2.5 feet away remains in focus, is this true, why you didn't talk about it..?😢
To me the footage seems a bit weird but I like it so far. Coming from a go pro to the ace pro for motorcycle stuff 😄. It’s freshly bought so managed to look at just a short footage I took. On my monitor it doesn’t look good
Thanks for the review. Early release/test models had a removable lens cover, but they dropped it (pun intended) - maybe for the reasons you mentioned or not, like the GP8 $$$. There's no doubting the outstanding quality footage - day or night for vlogging, but how robust is the rear flappy screen after you've tripped on a run or face-planted on a gravel track when you've come off your bike... and you then realize you've ruined the whole camera by having a teeny tiny scratch just off the middle of the lense.
I cracked the rear screen on my last GoPro the first time I used it so there’s a risk with any action camera of causing damage that needs a repair. But yes replaceable lens would be nice. Best thing is probably to add lens and screen guards.

Hi Steve. Is it worth getting the DJI Action 5, or is it pointless if you have version 4? Thanks.
I upgraded and I think it is improved all round. But not a huge difference, so may or may not be worth it for you.
