I'm an ENFP 4w5 and I swear to god I sometimes feel like my personality contradicts itself. Constantly feeling out of place but also craving socialisation but in a way that conversation is stimulating enough to not bore me, cause I hate any kind small or pointless talk. Sometimes feels impossible!

4w5 INTJ - Goth for 20 years now - writes poetry, uses fashion as self expression, and loves interior design and making pastries. Being a 4w5 and INTJ is as exhausting and confusing as it probably sounds like it is. I sometimes thing I could be INFJ but I think that's only when I'm stuck in a NiFi loop. Most of the time I'm rational, blunt, and sarcastic as hell.
Me too! And my emotions hit me so incredibly hard. And as an INTJ ... I’m not great with that. It is tiring. I’ve wondered if I’m an ISFP at times, but my Te is solid and my Se, a mess. Anyways, I hear ya. ☺️
Being an INTJ And a 4w5 is probably one of the weirdest things to experience being highly resistant to emotions but also intensely feeling them and trying to confront it.

The 90s truly was the decade for 4 music. Lots of alternative rock & grunge was very fourish. The Smashing Pumpkins, Nirvana, lots of smaller indie artists, of course. I also think of songs like the Wallflowers "One Headlight" and "Torn" by Natalie Imbruglia, and the Red Hot Chilli Peppers "Under the Bridge" as very 4ish even though on the whole the band seems very 7ish. But you're right, Radiohead's "Creep" is perfect. So quintessentially four. Personally, I think that song also has some 1 notes and Fe elements and is a good fit for INFJ, a type who happens to commonly be 4w5.

4w5 intp, who basically lives in the fear of being misunderstood inside of the personality community. it's depressing how people don't talk about the differences that mbti (your cognitive functions) and enneagram (the way you deal with trauma) have.
i am a logic oriented person based on my decisions. i despise every decision based on emotion, and can even be insensitive towards it sometimes. still, even though i'm a Ti dominant, most of the intense feelings i repress are turned into art. it has always been my way of communicating with not only the world, but my shadow self. it's all about 4w5s and the way we deal with emotional baggage.

This reply is extremely late, but maybe you should label yourself less. It could alleviate a lot of your stress. Enneagram and MBTI are far from perfect systems, you know. I speak from experience.

Like I mentioned in a previous comment, MBTI and Enneagram are far from perfect systems. Assuming that everybody fits perfectly into their categories is stupid, and dictating what others label themselves as when you yourself don't even know them is just ridiculous. For example, I am an INTP, but I score very high on Fi. I just happen to have higher Ti. In theory, my Fi should be barely used, or I should dread using it. But I don't. Now, am I going to let a system designed with accuracy not even as it's first priority tell me who I am? No, no I don't think I will. I think I'll go with my actual experiences rather than the lofty theories of a dead man.
Perhaps you don't want to read a paragraph in response to your 4-word statement, but you're under no obligation to anyways.

I think that type fours are usually already quite unique, and in order to deal with insecurity that arises from not fitting in, start to cling to that uniqueness. You can tell fours are mature when they know what is good for them to attach themselves to and what is not (i.e. a positive personality trait v.s. a destructive habit), and are able to accept themselves for who they are and see the uniqueness and beauty in that, rather than try to fit themselves into a box. This is all just from my own experience, though.
Your description of the four both wanting to be different and unusual but also accepted and loved is so accurate. It's a constant battle between authenticity and sociality. A very hard balance to achieve.
I think an unsung strength of the four is to see beauty even in dreadful situations. I love horror and disturbing media (not just for shock value, of course), partly because, deep down, I believe that all experiences are beautiful in their own way. Some are terrible, hellish, worse than death. But they still have an elegant beauty to them, because they are experienced by the human mind. That's the best way I can describe it.
There's one quote that comes to mind when I think of the enneagram four:

I’m a type 4 enfp. So basically swinging between being the life of the party and then turning into Edgar Allan Poe (who I think was a type 4 LOL)
i think the reason fours want to be both unique and accepted is not because we want to “have our cake and eat it too,” but because we think we HAVE to be unique to be accepted. once that doesn’t work, we just say “fine, if i can’t be accepted, i’ll just have my own little pity party club where i can be the most unique all by myself.” it’s like a very bitter, i’m cooler than you, self wallowing kind of solo club. we can’t find pride in anything else so we must find it in our outcasted-ness, and of course, we are the most outcast of all. but truthfully, we still want to be accepted, we still envy those who are accepted, so we eventually just grow to hate them, vowing to never be like them. but secretly we keep asking HOW?? how can i be like all the rest?? why am i defective? but we weren’t defective all along. we were always unique, but we weren’t loved because of it, we were loved because of who we are. we were always accepted, until we outcast ourselves. it’s a paradox true of all enneagram types. you stop getting in your way when you realize what you wanted so badly was there all along.
Thank God this is more clearer than my INFJ/INTJ struggle! I am definitely a Enneagram 4, however as it relates to acceptance, I'm indifferent about it in this season of my life.

ISTP 4w5 sx. I want to fit in and when I TRY to belong, that’s when I feel deep sadness and I feel defective because I just don’t belong, I don’t feel understood, I’m different from them in significant ways. Fortunately, I don’t get triggered that way often anymore, I accepted the reality of it and I get to keep my independence which is more important to me than belonging... but every now and then I feel sad that I can’t have that belonging. Thank you Nathan for starting Enneagram videos and I feel a little special that you started with 4. 🥰

INFJ 4w5... 🤔 I want to be recognized & valued as an individual by the group (plus it feels good to have focus or ambition) but "acceptance" (or even modest level of success and/or popularity) often leads to being granted some status or influence in the NICHE social-creative circles/communities I move in... Which is satisfying initially but shortly after, I feel rejected/moody/frustrated because the last thing I want is for people to feel obligated or motivated to be nice to me just because of what they imagine I can do to/for them because that totally cancels out the sentiment of being valued as a person (ALSO: I don't want anyone to feel like they need to be disingenuous around me; it's too awkward/sad)! It's a real pickle... 🥲😅 I think I can best describe it as: I get anxious when people don't "buy in" and disillusioned if I feel like I've "sold out" which can include just "trying too hard"... But satisfying one can agitate the other.
Perspective from a 4w5 sx/sp--
That niche aspect is what I really covet the most, sometimes to my own detriment. Having a certain trait or skill that sets you apart from others in a noticeable way is extremely appealing, and it's also what I look for in others. I highly value seeing what makes others stand out (especially when it's undervalued as I can empathize with that), and often try to incorporate those things into my own craft in whatever the topic may be. My (4) identity and sense of self is built through my (5) competence. After all, without the knowledge I have, I'm not me, right?
The morbid curiosity bit is also worth noting-- there is something of an appeal in understanding the harsh realities of life and the metaphorical exploration of death, pain, and various dark subjects. After all, how can we embrace the light if we don't know why we're hiding from the dark?
This is the way videos should be. The maximum amount of (valuable, right and true) information in the shortest space of time. Top class.

It is an interesting synchronicity that you posted a video on the enneagram 4 days after I got into it (after years of following MBTI myself).
I've been mistyped as a 4 because I'm normally outside of the norm, but I would rather just be a part of the crowd or a cog in the machine as a 6

As a way to find something unique, it is sometimes good to mix with normal or conventional people. Walking with people doesn't induces normalcy.
I oscillate from thinking I'm a 4 and 2. I know these types are totally different, but they are both relevant to me. I fear normalcy, I feel distress if people don't notice my originality right off the bat, I want to look different, talk differently, and I am a painter and writer and make some weird shit. Similarly, I fear not helping those around me, I'm constantly looking to give gushy, loving advice, I foster homeless pets. I want everyone to love me and think of me as caring, but also think I'm strange and a bit scary. Maybe it's an ENFP thing.
I can totally relate to that. I think it’s because in the Enneagramm the 4 type goes to type 2 (so basically becomes type 2) when they are very stressed and seek validation. At least this is what the theory says.

There is definitely some overlap between enneagram and mbti, type 4 and infp for instance. Just remember that the enneagram is intended to model basic fears, desires, motivations and longings. Therefore (at least theoretically), a person of any mbti type can be any enneagram type...although there may be a higher chance of certain types being certain types. 4w5 ENTP here.

you're definitely not! i'm also a 4w5 intp. the problem of our community is that people didn't learn that mbti and enneagram are not about the same focus inside of the personality psychology. mbti tells you all about your cognitive functions. enneagram, the way we deal with trauma. yk? :)

I think I'm a more mature type 4. I recently did the tritype test and I got type 7 as main, and 749 as tritype, the "gentle soul". I guess it makes sense, since nowdays I feel happy and I'm not really indulging in being depressed and I honestly don't want to feel that way anymore, I want to try and experience new things, and that sounds very 7ish lol. However if we focus more on my fears, I think I lean more with the 4w5 type. I'm just scared of never being able to share my stories, which in a way is being afraid of bein ordinary and generic. I do want to stand out but being accepted too and is so stupid! Help 😭

How to grow as a type 4? Any tips? I've written down to myself that I'm not my feelings and some other stuff that hopefully will make me a better, kinder and relaxed human being. The paradox of wanting to be true to myself and not feeling included in my friend group because of it, is frustrating and saddening to say the least.

I guess this will make much more sense to me. I will look at my eannegram?.. so i can determine what is really my personality type. I don't trust online test much. It just confused me more. I like to be an infp, because that is what i strive to be. They are authentic and don't care about what others think about them. i think they are pure... i mean if i am really naturally INFP. I'll feel content even if i think it would cause problems with my relationship to others sometimes.... but yeah, i don't think it will work with my family...
I like when little bit of a drama going on (at least in my arts), but I'm not a big fan of these topics. I mean death, tragedy etc - it's so far from me... I'd rather show different perspectives to others. My works are bittersweet, but not painful.
