How is the ride quality on road / paved surfaces compared to original stock suspension? Do you feel any loss of traction in hard breaking and cornering ?
From someone who has never done suspension until recently...you made this really complicated lol. Skid plate > sway bar bracket > sway bar connector > tie rods > brake line support > UCA > coil over. Then do it backwards and torque it down.
Hello Steve, greetings from Costa Rica. Steve is there a kit like that one for a 3rd generation four Runner? Great video, thanks for your time and clear explanation.
could’ve a 2” lift with spc’s adjustable ball joints been enough to fit the 34s? a front diff and skid plate drops will reduce ground clearance so defeating the purpose of having 34’s
A dif drop has no negative effect on ground clearance. Skid plates have minimum effect on ground clearance and will save your rig, trust me, the dents and gouges in my steel skids tell the story. With a little front of the tire fender trimming, and a body mount chop, you might fit 34’s with the SPC UCA’s.
The front sway bar brackets bolts are screwed into a factory welded square nut on the INSIDE of the frame I was told? The little square nut is welded in four small corners, are they easy to break off? My mechanics told me the previous people broke off one of that welded nuts…
All I can say is I’ve been flexing, really flexing, the front end g for over a year without issue. So, my real world experience says they’re strong enjoy. Hope that helps.
I have done a few hundred installs on 4runners, and I broke one bolt off inside the weld nuts. If you are worried about it, there is an opening in the frame to spray the tips of the threads before going at it. If you do break one, you can have the frame opened up, and new weld nuts put in and then weld the opening back into the frame as a solution.
Great video! Getting my installed at end of month on my brand new 2021 TRD with KDSS and hope it solve a shake I have. Jason, thanks, and that’s awesome, you’ll love them. I haven’t noticed any shake with the stock tires or the new ones. With your truck being new, is it something Toyota can address? I hope you get it figured out.

Question? I see you put an adjustable pan rod bar in the rear, Would you still need a Dr KDSS Bolt On TrackBar Correction kit ((having an adjusted length bar does not correct the height of the bar for bump steer)
Yes, if you lift the rear the bracket is still needed to correct the geometry (bring the panhard back to a flat position on level ground). The adjustment of the panhard is used to center the rear axle under the vehicle. 👍🏻
Question : The front coil overs are adjustable, that's what it says, the question is can you adjust the spring height after the installation. like from 3 to 2.5" or the otherway. I have seen toytec videos where they are able to adjust the toytec front suspensions.
Hi Steve! Can we please have an update on how the suspension kit is doing after 10 months? How has it held up? How’s the quality? How’s the ride? Thank you. I’m looking for the same kit for my fj!
Absolutely Dilan. Performance for the money is amazing. I run with a group primarily running Icon and there’s nothing they can do I can’t. Street manners have been great, zero complaints. I’ve had nothing break, fail, or come loose after initial shake down and re-tighten. Are there smoother, more capable suspension systems out there, certainly, but I’m not desert racing and don’t need to spend $4k-$6k to impress anyone. If you want to see it in action next to other rigs, my rig is in many videos on my brother’s channel, Overland Pacific Northwest. You won’t see them doing anything I can’t. In fact, you’ll see a video with my front end catching several feet of air on the beach. So yes, I’m still a huge Ironman fan.
The aftermarket ones are much stronger (solid vs hollow) but not necessary unless you’re doing some hard off-roading. The correction bracket will work with the stock panhard rod.
Should've loosed that lower control arm at the cams and disconnected the lower ball joints bolts and it would've been a breeze to reinstall the new strut.
Hi there, i see you have the kit installed for almost 8months, how is it performing. I will be receiving similar IM4X4 FCP kit next week(purchase inspired by your video). Curious to know What wheels and tires you end up getting. Thank you.
The Ironman suspension lift has been performing great overall and I’ve had zero problems. I’ve used it in just about every condition and have not been easy on it; still no issues. The wheels are Method Racing 704’s and the tires are BFG K02’s in size 285/75R17. You need a lift and body mount chop to run that size tire.
@@aired-downoverland9239 thank you. What is the offset on those wheels. My plan is to keep running the stock wheels and tires for sometime then upgrade. Do you think will that be an issue. Thank you for your help.
GREAT question! I say we stage a protest at Toyota until they get smart about it. I’d love to see the Taco with those upgrades, and, a solid front axle. While we’re at Toyota, let’s get them to start adding front lockers. Are ya with me?!
I’m not sure what issues you’re referring to? As for me and the people I wheel with, none have had issues. Let me know what specific issues you’re hearing about.
That’s a front differential drop (dif drop). When you lift a 4Runner it changes the angle of the CV axles, causing them to wear quicker. The dif drop reduces the angle of the CV axle. They only cost about $150.
How did you not end up with KDSS lean? I lifted my 2014 trail with bilstein 5100s and 2.5 inch toytech springs in the rear and my runner looked like it was going to fall over to one side. Took the springs out and put in a 1 inch spacer in the rear and it helped but now I cannot clear 33 inch tires even with a body mount chop. I hate this truck already.
My rig does not have KDSS, so I had no issue with it leaning after the lift. Have you measured each wheel well to see where you’re low? I would start there, then make adjustments as needed. I would also measure a stock 4Runner front end to see if the 5100’s are giving you a full 2.5 lift. You should EASILY clear 33’s with a BMC.
Great question Dean. I’ve adjusted several sets of Icon struts, which also take a spanner. The Ironman adjustment is the same principle. I’d try calling them, or fabricating one. They are local to me, so let me know if you strike out calling them and I’ll see if I can drop in, time allowing.
you don't need the tool from Ironman to adjust the front struts, but you can use it for adjustments and servicing. Per Ironman, the struts can be adjusted without the tool, but either way you have to remove them from the vehicle.
Hi Steve. Great video! What front axle camber and caster angles where you able to achieve with the IM4x4 UCA’s and lift? Also, what is your rake? Thanks in advance!!
@@aired-downoverland9239 thank you! I’m sitting at 2.5” lift in the front with about 2” rake rear to front. The alignment shop is only able to get 2.5 degrees of caster at -.5 degrees of camber. It will be good to see what you were able to get as a reference.
Fredadd, thanks for the comment. Unfortunately I have no experience with KDSS. I’ve worked on many 4Runners, but none had KDSS. Ironman actually has a video for a lift on a GX460 with KDSS that I think may help you; the lift is basically the same.
I ordered the ironman stage 2 last week. Only options available to purchase was the 2.5” performance front coils and the 2” performance rear coils. Was wondering if this was going to level my 4runner or have a huge amount of rake in the back?
I think you’ll still have some rake as it took 3.5 in front and 2 rear to level mine. I wonder if you could tighten up the pre-load ring and lock ring before you install them to get the extra inch??? You should ask them if that would work.
There's another channel that shows lifting, spacers and/or negative offset actually makes clearance worse. Seemed a compelling argument for using factory setup with larger tires.
There are justifications for most modifications, or for remaining stock. The justifications center around your intended use for the vehicle. If you modify, or don’t modify, based on that, you won’t go wrong. 👍🏻
Hey bud! I’m rewatching this video for like the 5th time lol. What made you this particular lift kit/aftermarket suspension? Curious on your thoughts. Thanks!
I had a budget set for my entire build and didn’t have the budget to go high end fully knowing I would swap out later. I haven’t swapped out because I’ve had no issues or concerns with the current set-up.
@@aired-downoverland9239 would you recommend this kit for other 4runner owners that want to run similar set ups? Have you had to/done a rebuild the shock yet? How has it impacted your ride quality on the road? How has it impacted your ride quality off road? Do you notice a difference with the aftermarket pan hard bar and the relocation kit? Seems like you are happy with the setup just looking for a little bit more info ^_^
Happy with them on and off road. Are there better suspension set-up’s? Sure, but do most people need them? The panhard correction keeps the geometry of the rear where it should be.
Thanks for your time and effort making the video. It was pretty helpful. Wish I had this video when I had my Ironman 4x4 same sets installed last September. What is the spring rating on the front? How do you like the ride compare to the factory?
After 7 months of driving my front lost whole inch and a half of height on both side and the rear stayed at 3" and the ride quality is softened a lot. I am thinking to raise it back up now.
Gunbileg, thank you. The sorting rate for the front is their standard pre-set to achieve three inches of lift. If you’re seeing a sag in your front, or difference in right side to side, you can loosen the lock ring under the spring and use a spanner wrench to tighten it. Do it in small increments, check your height, then adjust more. I just did this on a friend Icon suspension.
Prashant, no I didn’t have a lean. I’d report that back to Ironman. If you’re in Oregon they may offer to adjust the low side (tighten that spring). It can be done while the struts are on the vehicle, but you need a few specialty tools.
@@aired-downoverland9239 Thank you. Unfortunately not any closer to Oregon. I do have the adjustment tool which I purchased from Ironman. After driving 10 to 15 miles, I did measure all four level ground to the fender height. Looks like Front passenger side is 2/8th higher than the Front Driver and the rear passenger side is also 2/8th higher than the rear driver. Not a visible lean. All sides are in 38 3/8th to 7/8th range. I am getting alignment done tomorrow, will see if the shop can fix any. Again thanks for your help and your video helped a lot. Only thing I did different is to remove the front sway bar. Luckily I had enough clearance in the rear to get the top of the shocks installed, used a 6mm spanner to hold the shock top and wrench the bolt on. Got that trick from the Adventure built guys. I also see you use OEM wheels with new tires , did you use any spacers. My apologies, if I am bothering you with all these questions. Thank you sir for your time.
hey, I'm a big fan of your tutorials. would you say the main things you need to fit 34s was just 3in front, 2in rear, BMC? was the backspacing clearance enough for daily driving since you didnt run spacers?
Thanks for the compliment and question Tan. To run 34’s on a daily drive, you need the 3” front (2” rear to match), the BMC, and a little bit of plastic fender liner trimming forward of the front tires. If you’re running the stock 7.5” wheels, you may not even need to trim plastic, and the backspacing will be enough. My backspacing was really tight (but still worked) because I’m running the Ironman UCA’s, and they’re really beefy. More videos coming, I just lost two full video shoots due to a corrupt memory card or camera issue.
@@aired-downoverland9239 i have those exact tires in that size, just couldn't find anyone with similar setup to learn from. Goodluck with everything, looking forward to more vids!!
I think they’d fit up front with the body mount chop and high fender trim. The rear fender well is where I’m not sure. I just posted a pic on my Instagram (aired_down_overland) from the weekend, it shows the rear tire stuffed up in the fender with very little extra room…and I have extended bump stops
I have a 2005 4Runner and have 400lbs on my roof and will be adding a steel bumper and winch this month and rock sliders next year. I need stronger coils but am looking to upgrade my shocks at the same time. I currently have the X-Reas suspension on my truck and really like how it rides, cause it’s my daily. So curious if these shocks are a comfortable ride like fox 2.0s or do the run rough in the daily drive zone like a digressive bilstein 5100?
On road they are exceptional. Off-road they are very good and as capable as most people will need. If you’re into Overlanding they’re more than enough. They don’t advertise this widely but they are actually mid-travel as the extended shock length is more than stock.
Thank you for the reply. Do you have experience with other shocks to kind of point me in the direction of how comfortable are these on the road like with bump compliance but at the same time not to much body role?
@@aired-downoverland9239 😂I csnt seem to explain it. After you’ve screwed the bolt up to for the shock, and you get the bottom pushed all the way in with the rubber mallet. Does it hold/push up againts the metal at the bottom of the shock?

That’s a front differential drop (dif drop). When you lift a 4Runner it changes the angle of the CV axles, causing them to wear quicker. The dif drop reduces the angle of the CV axle. They only cost about $150.
thank you
Did it ruin your tss at all? I did mine and the tss is telling me it’s not working to take to the dealer.
Sorry for the delayed response, I've been out playing too much...if there's such a thing. No TSS issues for me, at all.
What do you know about the spanner to adjust the front struts? Ironman says it's proprietary, but my shop can't get one - perpetually back ordered.
Great question Dean. I’ve adjusted several sets of Icon struts, which also take a spanner. The Ironman adjustment is the same principle. I’d try calling them, or fabricating one. They are local to me, so let me know if you strike out calling them and I’ll see if I can drop in, time allowing.
@@aired-downoverland9239 Thanks but not necessary. I've been emailing with them.
you don't need the tool from Ironman to adjust the front struts, but you can use it for adjustments and servicing. Per Ironman, the struts can be adjusted without the tool, but either way you have to remove them from the vehicle.
Very nice work thank you for sharing 👍 🇺🇲🗽 Get-R-Done 4RUNNER 👍The Vermonter
Thx Lambert, I’m having fun wrenching away
Hi Steve. Great video! What front axle camber and caster angles where you able to achieve with the IM4x4 UCA’s and lift? Also, what is your rake? Thanks in advance!!
I’d have to find my final days sheet, tucked away a year ago. I have it, so if it’s easy to find, I’ll send you the stats.
@@aired-downoverland9239 thank you! I’m sitting at 2.5” lift in the front with about 2” rake rear to front. The alignment shop is only able to get 2.5 degrees of caster at -.5 degrees of camber. It will be good to see what you were able to get as a reference.
Great detail. I have a 2019 TRD OR with KDSS. Any chance of showing what's involved with that?
Fredadd, thanks for the comment. Unfortunately I have no experience with KDSS. I’ve worked on many 4Runners, but none had KDSS. Ironman actually has a video for a lift on a GX460 with KDSS that I think may help you; the lift is basically the same.
Nice video!! Thx for the info… is your front 3”? And rear 2”?
Glad you enjoyed it. Yes, 3 front and 2 rear.
I wonder how much the whole kit cost
Just check Ironman’s website for the latest price.
Sorry if I missed it somewhere, but what spring heights did you go with front and rear?
3” front and 2” rear
The iron man control arms you think with these arms I can get away from a bmc I wanna run 33s
I think people’s experience has been that 33’s do not require a BMC.
@ that’s good to hear because I was between accutune control arms or iron man I’ll just buy a stage 3 system and have everything
No KDSS on this truck?
Correct, no KDSS
@@aired-downoverland9239 thank you for the info. I
what was your height in the back from the wheel hub to the fender ?
It was so long ago I have no idea
thank you for the video. I did the same kit install yesterday. notice a lean on the driver side, did you have the same issue.
@@pbaireddy I only had the stock wheels on for a short period of time, then went to an 8.5 inch wide Method 703 wheel.
@@aired-downoverland9239 thank you, did you get 0 offset with 4.5 back spacing?
hey, I'm a big fan of your tutorials. would you say the main things you need to fit 34s was just 3in front, 2in rear, BMC? was the backspacing clearance enough for daily driving since you didnt run spacers?

Hi there..good info
Do you regear your truck?
Thanks for the question Angel. Next month the truck will be regeared to 4.88’s, and an ARB air locker will be added to the front.
Do you think I could fit 35 inch nitto mud grapplers on this suspension?
I think they’d fit up front with the body mount chop and high fender trim. The rear fender well is where I’m not sure. I just posted a pic on my Instagram (aired_down_overland) from the weekend, it shows the rear tire stuffed up in the fender with very little extra room…and I have extended bump stops
Did u make re gearin after 34s? If not why? Best regards.
Yes, I re-geared to 4.88’s and added a front air locker. I did run the 34’s for a year (on and off-road) before I re-geared.
How do you like the ride quality of the Ironman foam cell pro shocks?
The closest comparison would be Bilsteins; my 4Runner rides better than my Camry and CX-5
Like the Bilstein 5100s?
outstanding.
Thank you Oscar 🙌
Did you have to make any adjustments to the front coilover? What were your initial measurements?
No adjustments, to the coilovers. Not sure on the measurements.
Sir, How did you get it adjusted? did you take them out? or is it possible to do it while on the vehicle?
You can do it on the vehicle with spanner wrenches.
Thumbs up for the video.
Thx Elliott, it’s been a game changer
I have KDSS system what do you recommend for lift kit
3” front and 2” rear is a good setup 👍🏻
yeah, after watching this, having no helper and doing an F-150 a few years back I think I'm gonna Sub this one out.
Smart move if you have no help; safety first! Best of luck on your project.
How’s the suspension holding up?
I’ve put it through its paces, many times, without a single issue.
Does anyone know if the back of the shock touches up againts the metal on the back
Not sure I understand your question.
@@aired-downoverland9239 😂I csnt seem to explain it. After you’ve screwed the bolt up to for the shock, and you get the bottom pushed all the way in with the rubber mallet. Does it hold/push up againts the metal at the bottom of the shock?
Are you asking if the shock is under pressure, meaning it try’s to extend on its own? If that’s your question, yes
Please tell me where I buy the extended brake lines
You can get them from Yotamafia, they have an online store. They also make them in-house.

why do you have to replace the pan hard bar?
You certainly don’t have to. The new panhard came with the lift I purchased. When I removed the stock one and realized it was hollow, I was glad I had the new one. That said, myself and friends have Offroad 4Runners with stock panhard rods for years without issue.
Did you have to adjust the panhard bar?
I had it checked when I had the four wheel alignment done, the required adjustment was very minimal. When I installed it I set it to the stock length.
How does one even learn to do this stuff?
For me, time with my dad in the garage with the old Chilton manuals, trial & error, and learning from friends. Probably more trial & error than anything else. 🙌
How much did this all cost you?
I purchased my lift before prices skyrocketed for everything, so about $2k for the lift.
