I'm Still Alive
Back in September I had an accident on my motorcycle, suffering a tibial plateau fracture, shattered wrist, concussion, broken rip, and slight brain bleed. I feel fortunate to be alive and well down the road to recovery. I’ve got a ways to go, but I will recover, and I will be back on the trails. Thank you to the TH-cam community, my friends, and my family for the outpouring of support.
Good things come out of challenges and adversity if you keep a positive perspective. 🙌

35 Inch Tires 5th Gen 4Runner Overland Build vs 34 Inch Tires - Which Perfect for the 4Runner?
มุมมอง 59Kปีที่แล้ว
You can fit 35 inch tires on your 4Runner but there will be some long-term maintenance costs associated with that choice. Unless you have fully committed to the body modifications and other vehicle mods needed when you go to 35 inch tires, you may want to consider 34 inch tires. They provide nearly equal off-road performance, better on-road manners, have less long-term maintenance costs, and ar...

      Best way to tell is to put your vehicle on level ground, then look under the rear at your panhard rod. If it’s at an angle, and not flat, you would likely benefit from the correction bracket.

    I did the same lift as you, been running 33s for several years. Gonna do a BMC and go 34s or 35s. The question is, how is the uptravel off-road? I think it’ll rub when flexed so I’m curious what kinda trimming would have to be done there

    • @aired-downoverland9239
      @aired-downoverland9239 วันที่ผ่านมา

      First off, 35’s is a lot different than 34’s. I re-geared to 4.88’s with 34’s, going to 35’s without re-gearing would be a mistake in my opinion. Besides a BMC, I removed the stock mud flaps, did a high clearance cut on the front bumper cover, and trimmed the inner fender liner. If you have the same lift, you technically have mid-travel, as the front struts are longer than stock. Up travel is controlled by the bump stop, and sway bar to some degree. Remember, your total wheel travel (up/down) doesn’t change with an IFS lift, it pushes the tire down in the travel cycle, but doesn’t increase the travel cycle. Your mid-travel front struts are giving you a small amount of additional down travel. Hope that all makes sense, if not, shoot me a question.

    So if I got a lift kit and had someone professionally lift my 4Runner, should I try to save on labor and do this rod correction myself? Or should I also buy the rod correction kit, give it to the professionals, and don't try to save on labor costs (if it would even be that different).

    2001 Tacoma...SAS...auto 3.4L with 5.29 gears....I used to run 35"x12.50x17....then chose to downsize and went with 295/70R17 which is the present tire. The best way to determine if it’s needed is to place the vehicle on flat ground, after you’ve done the lift, and see if your panhard is flat or at an angle. The bracket from drkdss.com will correct it if it’s at an angle 👍🏻

    • @aired-downoverland9239
      @aired-downoverland9239 18 วันที่ผ่านมา

      The best check is not the lift height. Put your rig in flat ground, then take a peek at your panhard to see if it rises from left axle mount to right frame mount. If it sitting at an angle the drkdss.com bracket can bring it back to stock (flat). 👍🏻👍🏻

      I’ve never run that configuration, so I can’t answer for sure. Keep in mind, unless you go with mid or long travel, a lift has no impact +/- on tire clearance; your wheel is merely pushed down in the travel cycle, the total travel cycle is unchanged. 👍🏻

    Except when you take the rig off of the jack that bar will no longer be lined up how it is. Same as when you disconnected it. Its on the lift so with the axles and wheels hanging, the bar and bolt won't align. You should show the alignment of the bolt while its not jacked up and in its proper position.

    • @aired-downoverland9239
      @aired-downoverland9239 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I went to your channel to find other tips but found no content 🤷🏼‍♂️. • @TheDude1776
      @TheDude1776 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @aired-downoverland9239 I am not trying to sound like I know it all because I dont. My observation was that it looked like the misalignment of the bolt was do to the tension caused by the wheels/axle hanging. I should've posed my comment more in the form of a question. I was not trying to be rude. I have an older Hilux Surf and Land Cruiser that I want to lift at some point. I want to do it right of course. I also dont want to do anything that isn't totally necessary. My position is basically this. As a mechanic, wouldn't you want your customers to ask questions and challenge you on an unconventional idea or installation?

    • @aired-downoverland9239
      @aired-downoverland9239 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Fair enough, I misread your comment. The short answer is, when modifying your suspension, do everything you can to maintain stick geometry…unless you have a specific reason not to. A 4Runner rear axle will move slightly side to side at full droop, but keeping the panhard flat when the vehicle is in the ground is the goal; you’ll get better road and trail manners. 👍🏻👍🏻

I need stronger coils but am looking to upgrade my shocks at the same time. I currently have the X-Reas suspension on my truck and really like how it rides, cause it’s my daily. So curious if these shocks are a comfortable ride like fox 2.0s or do the run rough in the daily drive zone like a digressive bilstein 5100?

      On road they are exceptional. Off-road they are very good and as capable as most people will need. If you’re into Overlanding they’re more than enough. They don’t advertise this widely but they are actually mid-travel as the extended shock length is more than stock.

    Just had this video pop up on my recommended this morning (9/30/24). My biggest regret was selling my 2022 T4R OR-P Lunar Rock in December ‘21 after buying it Oct ‘21. I was doing Uber/Lyft and the MPG w/ gas being $3.86/gallon at Costco killed my income (didn’t know I could deduct gas costs). Now I have a 2023 Tacoma TRD OR 4x4 Access Cab and I’m averaging 18.3mpg and it should go up since I’m starting a job 16 miles away rather than 4.6 miles. I’m thinking I might get around 22mpg’s. When I build up my Tacoma I’m looking to put 255/85R16 without a lift. The wheel and tire combo I’m looking at is around 17 pounds heavier than stock.

      The rotational mass of the heavier tire/wheel set-up will have some impact on your MPGs, but it’s hard to stay stock when there are so many ways to personalize your rig. Have fun with your Tacoma build 🙌

    What would have been helpful to the biewer is the information on the fabricator of who manufactured the bolt on adapters and where to purchase from.

    Most do not even consider the front needle bearing wear from a lift.

      I think it comes down to two things 1) personal preference 2) Are you building your rig for a purpose. In my case it’s primarily the second, however, you are correct in that many people move forward with modifications without research. That said, like many people, I love that I can both modify and maintain my rig myself. 👍🏻

      @@aired-downoverland9239should I lift my rig with the 3inch rough country lift kit with two spacers?

      There is a lot to consider before lifting a vehicle. For me, I’m lifting to create capability, and I understand the potential risks; everyone should know what they’re getting into. Few lifts come complete with everything you need, including my Ironman 4x4 kit.
