I want to thank you for making this video. I was able to complete my 6112/5160 upgrade in 4 hours.
Nice job! Hopefully it went smoothly
Thank you, this is really helpful! You have a really chill style of instruction.
Glad it was. Thanks for watching!
Used your instructions today for an Eibach Pro 2R setup for my 4Runner...quick and to the point which made the job simple, although I installed the Bilsteins on an earlier 4Runner 6 years ago. My only add was disconnecting a few more brackets on the front / back for ABS.
I was happy with the Bilsteins until the 6112's started leaking last year, but Bilstein wouldn't replace under the "Life Time warranty"....so I decided on Eibach this time.
Awesome, thanks for your feedback! Let me know how you like the Eibachs once you get some time with them
Yep, that's the way to work on the front suspension, whether you remove the strut as an assembly , as you did, or you remove the top shock nut and drop the shock and spring out individually, then it's called the "no spring compressor method".
This is a GREAT setup! You've chosen wisely. :))
Now, it's time for "pizza cutters" (255/80 17R) on stock TRD Pro wheels (7" width is perfect for those tires). No rubbing, no body mount chop. The +4 offset of the TRD Pro wheels, combined with a lift below 2.5" solves a lot of issues. WELL DONE!
Thank you! I have to check your ride out first with those wheels before I commit 1 way or the other.
I like it! Make it happen @Az_Overland
I did my 5160s first while waiting for my 6112s to be assembled by Shock Surplus. I saw another vid that had the front stabilizer disconnected as a first step...good to see that the job can be done without that step. I believe just a small amount of loosening at the LCA bushings is enough to get the movement needed to do the install (keep track of how much the 22mm nut and bolt are turned). I like how you individually labeled the driver and passenger side shocks as the driver side is two circlips higher than the passenger side.
Thanks for your feedback! Yes, I think too many people get carried away with disconnecting stuff that may not be necessary. Good luck with the new setup
great install video! best video I've seen on this process; looking forward to doing my own lift in a few weeks.
I appreciate it! Good luck with the install
Not gonna lie, some of the best install (DIY) vids on youtube!
Thank you so much, I appreciate it!
This is exactly what I’m looking for! I’m in AZ and doing 6112+5160 on my 4Runner as well, I even have the same ryobi impact gun😂.
Tricks and lessons learned are invaluable, great job man!
That's great! What area of AZ? I'm Peoria.
Let me know if you have any questions as you do it.
@@AZOverland2017 will do, I appreciate it brother, I’m in Tucson!
Will try to get those installed in the next 2 weeks or so
hopefully everything goes smoothly!
My nephew and I were talking about this yesterday up at fossil creek. We both have the off road 4runners. Nice!
Thank you sir! 4Runner Power😃
Great install video, very straightforward and clear. I plan on using this method on mine, I have the Eibach Pro 2R kit, just need to get around to installing it. Mine is a 2013 in New England, so I'm worried about rust, but clearly you didn't have that issue lol. Something tells me my LCAs are not going to swing down like yours did.
@@trailrunnah8886 Thanks. Yes, this LCA s can be a pain if they seize up. Good luck!
Sweet! Time for new wheels and tires!
In time...
I just installed Racerunners or Swayaway 2.5" coilovers for just a couple hundred more than the Bilsteins! The ride is plush and no body roll like the Fox 2.0's that I removed! The ride height adjustability while on the 4Runner on these was the only set back for me...
I'm not familiar with those. What do you mean about ride height adjustability while on the 4Runner?
@@AZOverland2017 They have threads on the shock body and an adjustable collar so you can raise or lower as you wish without removing them from the vehicle! Swayaways are Baja proven shocks just like Kings and have been around since the 80's! Not as popular because of advertising I guess since AFE bought the company a few years back!
@@JB-he1jt Okay, got it, I misunderstood. I'll have to check those out. I got a good deal on this setup because they are the "old" style. Meaning, they are only adjustable up to 2.5" lift, which was actually perfect for me. The newer 6112s can go up to 3"
@@AZOverland2017 Nice...Yes with Toyotas you want to stay under 2.5 of lift or just leveled in the front!
Excellent video, simple and to the point!
Thanks for your feedback
Wow...this is how you film a DIY video... Bravo!
I appreciate you!
No need for spring compressor? Thank you for the video. Best one ive seen so far
@@nicknabozny6186 Thank you! I had it preassembled for this install. However I have done the assembly myself on other installs and have used a spring compressor
Yes!
Perfect. Well done sir
@@heathskywalker I appreciate it!
Great video. So clear and precise. Is it possible to just do one side at a time? (Jack up one corner and remove that tire then do the other)
Yes. That's exactly what I do. If you ever have a question about something you just refer to the other side. However, I do jack up the whole front (rear).
Question: Why wait to tighten the lower control arm's two remaining bolts for when the wheel is on and the suspension is loaded?
It's important to preload the arms at the ride height with the vehicle weight or the bushings may bind if done with no load.
@@AZOverland2017 when you say lower control arm bolts are these the adjustable cam bolts or the bolts at the end of the shock with the bushing around it, or the two bolts on each side going up and in holding the arm?
@ I'm referring to the cam bolts
@@AZOverland2017 Thanks!
Pay attention kids, THIS is the way to do a replacement, NOT the way Eibach and other vids show by disconnecting the UCA, TRE, sway bar, brake line, yada yada...😱
Thank you!
I installed new 6112s on my FJ today (same suspension setup as the 5G4R) using a DIY garage lift. Tried to use a jack stand to raise the LCA back into place to reconnect at the ball joint, but it started to separate my rig from the forward lift points. Then I tried disconnecting the sway bar and voila that worked in allowing the knuckle to come down. Alignment scheduled for tomorrow.
Awesome !
Thank you sir!
Looks good! Hopefully you can keep up with me now!
Will do
How long did yours take to settle? I’m about to install used fox 2.5s with about 2k miles on them. Hope they’ve settled
A few days. So yes, they should be settled
Great video,Are these adjustable via a coilover wrench?
They are adjustable but not by that method. They have grooves set into the shock body that you can choose from to increase or decrease height based on what groove you set the clip on.
@AZOverland2017 ok ,was planning on getting them for my 5gen for two reasons (1) the nose diving when braking (2) to adjust the left lean that most 4runners have, kind of a pain if you have to disassemble to adjust to try to get both sides equal .
@@ChristopherSmith-rn4wd If you are assembling them yourself, there are charts inside the package that tells you exactly what ring to put the driver side and passenger side on to correct that lien. If you order from Underdog Motorsports they will assemble it correctly for you as well like they did for mine. They should give you 5% off too with the information I left in one of the comments or the description. They are doing that for my subscribers
@AZOverland2017 thanks for that info
Cool video.

They are the factory SR5 wheels but I did a little work on them. You can see the video of what I did here:

@ 🙏
The link for the suspension doesn’t work.
@@TyGa823 Thanks. I'll check it out and update it
awesome video, a FJ is pretty much same underside. I checked on what a shot wanted and its crazy. I see where you placed front jack stands, but that rear one what is it on?
The rear stand is on the frame rail. I always put extra jack stands as backup and always leave the the actual jack in position anytime I'm under a car. I have 4 hydraulic jacks and 4 stands. I refuse to dies under a vehicle.😄
Do you think the same installation technique will apply on the 4th Gen 4Runner. Trying to install a 3" lift kit.
I haven't worked on a 4th Gen but most of the install should be similar.
How was the ride quality ?
It is much improved over the factory suspension. My experience is from daily road driving, I haven't taken it off road yet, but I'm expecting to be quite a bit better than it was. No sounds, no rubbing, and not a hard ride.
Let us know if you get that infamous drivers side cv axle needle bearing loud humming sounds only when in 2 wheel drive going 40-50mph.
I will pay attention for it and certainly post up if I have any issues 👍
Do you recommend it, to put 34” tires? In 4Runner 2021 off road
There are some things to take into consideration if fitting 34's is your goal without rubbing. You can use there components but you need to go to set it to at least a 3" lift. Even with the higher lift you will need to most likely do some grinding in the fender well or do a BC (body mount chop). Also, the offset of the wheel plays an important part in the equation.
Nice video and thanks for posting. What do the green stickers on the fender do? It would be great if you could post another one that contains KDSS like GX460.
Thank you! The green on the fenders is painter's tape that has measurements I took before and after the lift. I measured from the center of the axles to the bottom of the fender lip to get accurate measurements. I haven't had the opportunity to work on a vehicle with KDSS unfortunately
@@AZOverland2017 Thanks, I just ordered 6112/5160 for GX460.. Will send you an email.
One of my concerns is KDSS lean, and I did not see an option for choosing an option KDSS vs non-KDSS for pre-assembled order. Will you be able to take care of this?
@@_willkim Did you order them from Underdog Motorsports? If so, call Brett the owner and he will take care of it for you. You can also message him on their Facebook page.
May i ask what shocks you recommend for the 5th gen off road 4 runner with KDSS.?
There are so many variables to take into consideration when choosing the suspension that will work for you. There are many much more qualified to ask the right questions and steer you in the right direction. Possibly call Brett with Underdog Motorsports. He won't let you down.
@AZOverland2017 Thanks for the reply.. I ask because I wanted to compare with your recommendations. The Trd off road 4runner is the only model that offers the kdss and hard to find any research with lifts . I did go with the bilstien 6112 and 5160, but you also need the spring. Hope this info helps ..
@@MrWizardofozzz Thanks! Have you installed it yet? How do you like them?
@AZOverland2017 Installation is tomorrow after work, then alignment. Will reply on Monday with details.
Great video, what clip setting did you have the 6112’s on in order to only get a 2 inch lift upfront?
Thanks. The set I used was transitioned out to the new part number which offers a 3" max lift. My older part number offered a 2.5" max lift.
When you get a set, there will be a chart to tell you where to put your clips according to what lift you want.
If you order from a place like Underdog Motorsports, they will ask you questions about your vehicle and set the clips accordingly
Did you worry about torque specs?
I torque what I can and don't worry about what I can't. I've been working on cars for a long time and have a good sense and feel of how "tight" something should be. I have always torqued every bolt on every engine I've built. I've never torqued an oil drain plug or filter and haven't had a single issue in 39 years. However, if my brother was doing an oil change, I would encourage him to torque those items
@@AZOverland2017 Hey man. Same with me. 40 years of working on my own vehicles and I have never torqued anything. All feel. Never had a problem. Knock on wood! ✊✊. Next week I will be ordering rear shocks, either the 5160's or 5100, but am undecided. My 4th gen is super light as I removed my rear seating, so probably 150 lbs lighter than stock. Hence my debate. I should probably go 5100's for this reason, as the 5160's might be overkill for street/highway driving. Thoughts?
@@troybabs I would lean towards 5100 for your setup, especially if your not doing a lot of off-roading. If you are ordering from Underdog make sure they give you the discount. You can always pick Brett's brain (1 of the owners) on this. He is a wealth of knowledge

Did you do anything to correct the lean? Like adjusting the hight setting or a trim spacer?
Yes the ring clip is not placed in the same position on both sides. It is set higher on the driver side to correct lean. There is actually a chart that tells you what clip to put the driver and passengers side on in the directions.
Great install video. Thanks for putting the work in to produce and post it. Was going back and forth on whether I should do it myself. Haven't seen someone swing the lower control arm out of the way like that in other videos. The way you show helps me decide to do it myself. Although I heard the lower ball joint torque values are extremely high.
I see in another post that the front settled around 2.25 " which would be the max that I am looking for. Which clip position did you choose to achieve those numbers? And, do you know if those clip positions apply to the newer 6112 shocks?
Thank you! The clip positions do not apply to the newer 6112s. I believe the older part # I used went to a maximum 2.5" lift and mine was in the top position on the driver side and either 2 or 3 lower on the passenger to compensate for driver lean. I also have a bit if added weight on the front of mine.
If you plan on installing the springs yourself the Bilsteins have a chart included to indicate where the clips should be for your desired height. Order them from Underdog Motorsports if their price is right and have them set the springs and clips for you. Brett or Shane are the only 2 (owners) who work there and are super helpful.
Lower ball joint torque I believe is 112 lb/ft. Vey doable with leverage.
@@AZOverland2017 Received my order from Underdog, but my struts are different than yours. I have a '23 ORP 4Runner. Thanks to your video, though, before I had already started to pull off parts etc, I was able to see clearly that yours are set to different clip locations (my are the set to the same position) and the part numbers on yours are different than mine.. Also, the part number on the box mine came in says they are for an FJ Cruiser. Maybe they just reused the box or perhaps there was a shipping mistake. I've written them to ask.
@@HuskyMike There is some compatibility with the FJs and 4Runners but confirm with Brett when you call.
Regarding clip position, my set of Bilsteins are the older part #. Same shock but the older part # provided a max of 2.5" lift and the newer provides up to a 3" lift I believe. That would explain the clip positioning.
@@AZOverland2017 Thought I'd update you. The shocks they initially sent me were for a 4th gen. Research showed they would probably work, but the lower shock bushing width is narrower than a 5th gen which would necessitate squeezing the lower mount to get it them to fit correctly. I wrote Underdog and they immediately shipped me the correct shocks (same as you have) and paid to return the first shipment. Great service. I installed the fronts tonight using your excellent video and with only a couple hiccups, all went well. Thanks again for posting the video.
@@HuskyMike Thank you so much for the update! They are a stand up company or I would not recommend them. They have a great reputation here in AZ. Glad it worked out
Was this with or without KDSS system?
No KDSS
Great video. Didn’t you need custom UPCs?
Thank you. No, the lift was under 3 inches and we were able to align it. Ni issues with this lift on OEM uppers
@@AZOverland2017thanks. Creat video again. Just subscribed

What clip numbers did you use for your Bilstein 6112? I got a stock 4Runner limited with no extra weight in the front. I want to do a 2 inch lift in the front. Yours came out to 2.2 so I really want to be at 2 inches no further than that. Can you help me with the right clip number?
I don't remember the positions. Do you have the shocks already? If you have them, they should have a chart of where to install the clips for each side according to the lift you want. If you are ordering them through Underdog Motorsports, Brett will preassemble them or tell you where to install them according to the information you give him
What size tires?
They are 265's but A/T Wranglers so they appear bigger
Doing this right now on my 07. Lower control arm is spring loaded. Doesn't fall down. Anyone else like this?
Ensure everything is loose and nothing else is connected to the LCA. If that is the case, it sounds like your bushings/sleeves have binded and you may need new bushings
@AZOverland2017 i almost took the bolts out trying to free them up. So I'll get them changed.
Nice!!! Bro, question why did you decide lifting to 2.5” front and 1.5” rear?
It was supposed to be 2" front and 1.5" rear, but settled right around 2.25" front. The back of the 4Runner sits a bit higher than the front from the factory. So, I wanted a combo that got me closer to a level ride. I do like it just a tad higher in the back, so when loaded it gets close to a level ride instead of that rear squat which I had. This worked out great for me
@@AZOverland2017 nice.. they said if it’s too high it will affect the ride quality.. what would the sweet spot height?
@@jonatbass1111 I believe if you keep it under a 3" lift. I haven't taken off road yet, but daily driving with this setup is much improved
What Circlip do you choose and does it sit level !
Do you know the torque specs for this install. Going to tackle this weekend.
I believe the top shock mount nut is 20 lb/ft, the lower mount is 61 lb/ft, and the 2 bolts reattaching the lower ball joint are 112 lb/ft

Hey do you remember which clip you used for the Driver and Passenger? I bought the same suspension and want to get it right the first time lol
I read in the comments that you seemed to get more 2.25” lift as opposed to 2”?
A few things to keep in mind:
I have the older version of the 6112s which had a lower max lift as opposed to the newer version which goes up to 3". So, it's important to know which one you have.
Depending on that, it would be different. If you don't know call Brett at Underdog Motorsports and he will let you know exactly where those clips need to be
Torque Specifications PLEASE!!!
All the specs you could want right here:
trail4runner.com/2020/06/17/5th-gen-4runner-torque-specs/
Tight
Would you happen to know the torque specs on the top and bottom bolts?
Why do so many people undo the lower ball joint bolts and cam bolts? Just unhook your end link and flip the sway bar out of the way. Takes 2 minutes.
Interesting. After doing that, how are you making room for the strut assembly to come out?
@@AZOverland2017 I believe with the sway bar out of the way, there will nothing keeping you from removing the strut toward the front of the vehicle.
