  • The new, eighth-gen Toyota Camry Hybrid is not just bigger and more luxurious than before, it's got a heavily revised powertrain that promises to be vastly more fuel efficient. Gavin D'Souza drives it in Hyderabad to see what's new, and how it compares to other luxury sedans of a similar price.

Mind you, this the highest selling Toyota car in USA. Even in Middle East, people simply love Toyota brand & Camry in particular. Unfortunately Indians do fall for German luxury cars. For me, the looks could have been more aggressive.

In USA it is two segments below German cars. Why it won't sell in Europe, South America and China? People go for Germans bcz of solid build quality and performance. In USA it costs less than 25 lakhs. In India you can get a Passat or superb for less money or Audi, BMW, Mercedes, Jaguar or Volvo sedans.

It’s not about Indians falling for German cars. It’s Toyota’s pricing of their cars in India.
The only reason the Camry is so famous in the United States is because it’s a gateway entry sedan. It’s priced cheap, and a daily driver and almost everyone, - taxis , noveau drivers & those on a budget would either purchase this or the Civic.

What points are you comparing ? Octavia RS stands absolutely no chance against Camry in terms of any practical performance. They both are of two different segments. Speaking of infotainment...yes it's a shame Toyota couldn't get it straight but it equalises it with better insensitives for the passenger backseat which cars in that segment don't do normally.

The thing is the Camry is more of a futuristic sedan now than an elegant premium saloon. It has got lot of potential and the looks are sharp, but the problem is that at a price of 40 lakh, it really doesn’t outshine the German competitors. The government needs to cut down on hybrid tax and actually provide a rebate. Indian government needs to learn a thing or two from the Middle East. If the Camry comes down to 30-33 lakhs it would be a perfect fit.

There have a lot of instances of airbags not inflating in Toyota cars in India be it the etios, fortuner or innova. So much banter about reliability of the brand here. I'd say the airbag not being reliable is a huge concern.
