Not a pencil line in sight. All by eye and in less than 20 minutes. My dad was the same. You sir, are a true craftsman and that spoon is beautiful. I enjoyed every minute of this video - thank you.
Nah, watch the cuts carefully, he replaces the work in his hands with something he prepared earlier, that's why he just hacks away with the axe and makes a lot of wood chips. It's all wood chips and mirrors. I am joking.... obviously
You prolly dont give a damn but does any of you know of a tool to log back into an Instagram account?? I was stupid forgot the password. I appreciate any tricks you can offer me!
Please good Sir! Moar silent carving!!! I love watching your work and it got me into spoon carving myself. I like going back to those silent carving clips to compare and revise my carving style. Please consider making more videos like this.
Absolutely beautiful to watch such a talented craftsman. I could watch this all day. Thanks Barn. Is that a specially commissioned crook knife? Where could I get one from?
Be careful, i used to watch it myself... And now i'm carving spoons too ☺It's even more relaxing, only downside is you need to be careful with your fingers, hehehe
That is some really awesome work ... truely a master piece ;-) I don't know if "spoon club" accepts wishes ??!, but if you do mine would be "silent carving - the soup spoon" many many thanks for showing and PLEASE keep up the good work, and let the video's come floating like a river ... ;-))
Hi Terrain - thanks for your kind words - it's great you enjoyed the video. This is just a small selection of the videos we have over at spoonclub.co.uk - we have over 100 hours of videos with new ones released every week!
Fantastic video, love the work, you make it look effortless, could you please let us know in the description what wood you use in up coming videos please 😎
It looks like white birch (Betula pendula). You can see the bark for a second in the beginning and the close-up shots at the end show the typical grain of birch wood.
Well i would like to know what knife he is using to hog out that spoon. Its cutting across the grain like butter but could be his mad sharpening skills...what angle do you have on there man? And bam! Why didnt i think of using a hatchet to hog out the shape first....seems a no brainer...and man what a hook knife! Custom made? I wonder if pfiel/swiss made makes one like that
Usually those are custom made knives. I'm planning on making a couple myself, because right now i'm using Mora and it's not the best one. It's ok as a starter knife, but gives my finger some bad blisters;) Try to google "hook knives" or "wood carving knives" and check for some local blacksmiths making them. I don't remember the website, but i know there were a few in UK making those tools.
So I got a lot of birch for spooncarving. Today I split a log and when carving I noticed dark spots and streaks in the wood... some green or brownish... these spots are about as big as a nails head, anyone knows what this might be?
Every time I watch one of these I curse myself for jumping straight into working with reclaimed wood, and not spending more time on green wood carving... that said, the upside is that I've been forced to get a lot stronger than I might have been otherwise! (Not that wood quality is everything, but even with my tools blisteringly sharp I sometimes have to work so much harder to get clean cuts like these).

Just fantastic, Barn. There is nothing simple about making a simple spoon with such grace and economy of movement. Well done.

You are TRULY a master craftsman, Barn. Could you tell me what kind of wood that you used for this one?
I would guess poplar, based on the coloring and grain pattern you can see in the video. Not too sure though.

Wow! Amazing skills 👌 how old and wet is the wood though? Also what species of tree?
Hi Andy - thanks so much! The wood will always be green - in the case of this spoon, it's Birch
Nice job. Very good.

Fanastic video. Where could I get tools for spoon carving?
Where can I get a hook knife that size?
Sorry for asking. I'm a newbie. Is the wood from which you make spoons freshly cut, wet or dry, seasoned? Happy new year 2024.
Barn makes it look easy.
also speechless!!
Show...
Você é muito habilidoso.
What’s wood is? Thanks
hi, I enjoyed to watch showing your wonderful skills. Can ou tell me where to get such a great hook knife?
Usually those are custom made knives. I'm planning on making a couple myself, because right now i'm using Mora and it's not the best one. It's ok as a starter knife, but gives my finger some bad blisters;)

What finish would you use for a spoon like that? Something like linseed oil or beeswax?
Hi Timothy - Barn generally uses tung oil to finish his spoons - hope this helps!
I want to know (as many others have asked) where did you get that honking huge spoon knife!?
Hi Ed - this is a Twca Cam made by Ben Orford
Шедевральная работа...
Geat to see you Ban...are you at the bushcraft show this year ?
Beauityful work. I have a question. What wood you use?
It seems to be birch wood.
Are your spoons for sale? If so please tell the information 😊
What kind of wood do you use and do you use green or dried wood?
Generally Green, but I've seen him use seasoned firewood as well.
Top Man
What treatment do you use to protect it?
Who click the dislike button? I want to see your spoon carving
May I ask what type of axe you’re using? Is it a single-bevel or double?
nice hatchet
What kind of wood?
Well you certainly know how to keep your tools sharp.
Ideally, how seasoned should the wood blank be?
Green!
Have you always carved your spoons without a pencil sketch? ATB. Chris
