Remember Flashdance - welder by day, dancer by night? This guy is probably a spoon-carver by day, brain-surgeon by night such is his eye-hand coordination. I lost track of how many times I said "No way!" out loud. Like whalloping the lower axe corner in to start off the bowl. If I tried that with my G-B Swedish carver I'd lose the end off the spoon at best, a finger at worst. Truly impressive. This is really mesmerising stuff. Who'd have thought someone shaving slices off a stick of wood could be so compelling? And loving the audio, letting the tools and wood provide the music and narration.

Proof that you don't need a shop full of expensive tools. A few simple, basic, tools, and skill (practice !), and you can produce something beautiful, and, as a bonus, useful.
Incorrect! With practice, you can carve spoons as great as Barn does. What separates Barn from others is his impact on the spooncarving community; the way he has inspired many to take up this extraordinary craft.
How can you not be captivated by the passion and control, along with the functional design of the tools. That hook knife and the handle length, gave a level of leverage and control I've not seen. Admittedly I'm very new to this. Awesome video to watch.👍🤝
Watching a craftsman at work, with no irritating, distracting music playing in the background! Wonderful! Thank you for posting your video on You Tube.
Absolutely beautiful!!! A little after 15 mins, he clears his throat, the rest of the time was the wonderful music by his work. Thank you very very much, what craftsman skills. I'm of the belief that I've seen you and have been extremely impressed by your amazing skill, what an amazing accomplishment!!! Wow

@@mrhockett1Me too! Yesterday I bought a vintage Ochsenkopf cleaver, I suspect from the pre-Gedore era. It's the most beautiful thing but about as sharp as a cucumber...
He should be regarded as a national treasure and studied. Because he peels away wood like an apple and can visualize the shape of his projected piece as he looks at it after each modification that his tools render to the remaining block and he strategizes how the next cuts will affect the shape
Watching the master spoon Carver at work is mesmerizing. Hoping to get to his shop next week and have a chat about his spoon and wood choices. Awesome Barn!
I searched wooden spoons cause im going to carve some out for my kitchen. I never wouldve known that theres a community dedicated to wood carving. So cool
8:23 Maybe a stupid question, sorry. I have the same axe i use for carving, and i got a new wood log as a base to work on, when i try to land the axe into the base like that, it wont stick... it digs into the wood, i know for a fact is it shaving sharp (i can shave hair with it) but it wont stick when i hit it on the wood... is the wood the problem here? is it because the surface is still cleanly cut and not jagged like you have in the video? is the wood of a hard type? should the wood log be of a softer wood type? any specific type? Thanks
idk if im right but i think the blade should be sharper than just razor sharp, i watched a few videos of some woodcarving guy and he rlly could not stres enough that you should strop your axe waayy ppast razor sharp, like it was some sort of religion lpp
Great work Barn is that a Robin Wood carving Axe? I bought one from him last year and it’s terrible the grinds are really narrow uneven and obtuse it won’t take or hold an edge
Silent carving is my favorite channel. I just purchased a hook knife and sloyd knife set and can't wait to get some wood worth making a spoon. Excellent work sir!
Where do you get those bigger carving tools? I have two smaller ones and gouges, but only like 1/4 of that size. I can't find bigger ones like that anywhere. I love your videos by the way.
The sheer joy of watching a master craftsman at work and no irritating music. Barn, the man
he's worth a sub!

By far
right! It's crazy to me this has less than 100k views.
Wonderful to see you liberate a shapely spoon from a chunk of wood without so much as a pencilled design. Masterful.

the confidence he puts in his deep cuts is what seperates barn from other carvers in my opinion.

More videos please! These are the best on YT!
if you could please provide the wood size and species it would be of benefit. great video and very informative. thanks
Then it would no longer be a silent carving....lol
It could just be written in the description and therefore still be silent and informative

You are a true craftsman who is very pleasing to watch. How long have you been doing this?
I skipped over this video when I was getting started but now I find it very helpful! Nice!
Is it the camera angle or does his sloyd knife have a bend in it. Never noticed before.
Excellent work, Barn.
Artist with an axe
It's just an art and science ! Great job.
What is the name of the tree you use
Hi there - the wood used here is Alder
Appreciate good craftsmanship with no bs music or yammering on about nothing just a whole lot of getting it done
Oh Thank-you Jesus for that!
That was incredible, outstanding, superlatives are inadequate. Nicely done.
I never thought that you could be so accurate with a hatchet
The slightly curved sloyd knife... Brilliant

Is that mora bent?
This man has the control and precision of a CNC machine. Impressive.
Dang fine axe work very accurate too way to go Barnaby . I believe that's a dolphin spoon ?👍😉🐺🐾

Nice and relaxing work!
What kind of wood are you using? Greetings from Mexico!

Very nice work!
j'ai cherché longtemps, mais là, j'ai trouvé le "Paganini" de la hache, impressionnant !
Hi love to see all his tools love to take up this as a hobby
Great job and expertise in using tool, it’s a pleasure to follow your hands! What kind of wood?
I notice a slight curve on the knife blade. Wonder if it is from use or purposefully made.
Alex bozic could be made that way to improve my tools too I do it a lot like removal sharp point on hook knives ❤👍🐺🐾
Is that wood or just clay?? Awesome sir 🙌
What happened to the tip of your knife ? Another great vid BTW
Class. Pure Class
Grazie per meditazione...

DANG ! Beauty spoon , Beauty job.
Beautiful work, thank you.
How green is the wood that you are using for these videos?
I have no skill!
Also that hook knife is freakin sick!!
Does anyone happen to know what brand of hook knife this gentleman is using?
Hi Isaac - this is a twca cam made by Ben Orford
@@SpoonClub Thank you for the info!
Is that basswood? Linden?
GREAT SKILL, MEDITATIVE. (I ALSO FIND THE SHAVINGS STICK TO A WOOL SHIRT OR SWEATER.)
Amazing!
They say he carved it himself...

Complimenti opera magistrale !
Posso chiederti che legno hai usato e quali secondo te sono i più adatti a questo scopo?

What kind of wood is it? Dry or green?
What kind of wood is he using?
Hi Simon! This is a piece of Alder. A lovely wood for carving.
@@SpoonClub hello, I'm a fellow carver and I just found your videos this morning, do you also make bowls??

Is the wood fresh cut or dryed

Enjoy your carving foray, I've been hooked for about six years
Excuse me sir what axe is that? Thanks
Hi,do you use dry wood?
Are you using green wood??
Awesome! I must say that is a massive hook knife lol
A magnificent spoon.... made by what is perhaps the most frightening woodcarver I've ever seen.
Is the knife bent on purpose or is this just a side effect of Barn being a big bloke with strong arms?
Can you use a draw knife
What size is that Twca cam?
Could you make a video where you carve a spoon like the one on the poster in the background? 7:19
Goodnight everyone
what wood do u use?

Hi Tim - this is a Twca Cam made by Ben Orford
very good
what kind of wood is it?
Hi there - this spoon is made from Alder
What wood is that?
John Smyth Alder
anyone know where the hell that hook knife comes from?
Simon Zimbler probably home made or by a friend
Google Welsh twca cam (bent knife).
Nic Westermann makes them.
This one was made by Ben Orford.
Does anyone know where to geht the Posters in the background (0:07) ?
What sort of wood was it? It looked fairly soft.
Hi Kenneth. I believe this was a piece of Alder. Certainly one of the softer hardwoods, but a beautiful wood to carve that takes a lovely finish!
It looks and sounds (when cutting into) like birch or maybe alder?
