Fun fact: law enforcement was concerned with the number of injures that happen each year due to the race but no one in the village claims to be the organiser so they have no one to actually accuse.

I went there this year. It’s epic. First you see that giant cheese wheel absolutely flying down the hill like a giant canonball and bouncing like 5 metres into the air and then you see people rolling down in a very similar fashion and at not much lower speeds.
It’s an amazing sight.
I've watched the videos for years but can't even imagine what it must really look like in person. I'm sure a LOT is lost in translation.

@@Dynamikcheese Even though I've seen film from basically all angles I know that it doesn't even begin to convey how REALLY steep it is looking down. Like when one skis. "Oh that mountain doesn't look that steep". Then you're at the top looking down and absolutely frozen in panic thinking that if you're lucky it's just going to be a controlled fall down the slope.

I know! I was there yesterday and even being a spectator was hard as everyone kept sliding down - it is stupidly steep though it never looks that bad in the videos!

Anyway, I learned Judo, the first thing they teach you is how to fall and then you can go through hours of practice of you and your opponents just throwing each other and tumbling around and still be perfectly fine.
And if anyone replies to me with: ''there are mattresses to break your fall in martial art'' I can guarantee you that wet, soft earth like there is in the place where they do this competition is a lot softer than those crappy mattresses we use. They are frigging tinner than my arm.

I was talking to a friend a couple of months ago about how our home county - Gloucestershire - has the cheese rolling championship, the shin kicking championship, and it only lacks one other mental sport from being the barmiest triathlon in the world. My suggestion: there is a road to nowhere in my town, about 400m long, and wondered if the final event should be a blindfolded sprint from one end to the other, give it a catchy title, and watch the mayhem unfold. Call the whole thing the Fruitcake Triathlon with the slogan 'welcome to Gloucestershire'.
Finally, a region populated by people you can trust. Can you recommend any B&B?

I guess it was made by rich aristocrats that would fill the ball with gold coins and then watch from balconies as the peasants beat each other senseless for the ball.
I think the only rule in the Atherstone ball game is you don't kill anyone.

The gold ball game was played between two counties (Warwickshire and Leicestershire) at the end of the 12th century. That was a rare occasion.

I've climbed this hill and walked (fell) back down it. It's that steep that going up is easier on all 4. What the video doesn't show to well it how uneven and rough the slope is.

North Carolina has lots of steep hills, perfect for training for this event. Of course, their hills tend to be covered in trees and sharp rocks, so 'training' for this could very likely cause paralysis and a punctured lung!
