As someone who buys cheese pre-sliced or pre-grated in order to minimise cheese-based challenges this is far beyond the level of effort and risk I’m prepared to go to in the area of cheese procurement 🤷🏼♂️
I'm not sure if they have supermarkets in the area where this takes place. I would assume they don't have cheese readily available. But this seems a bit cruel to make people do this for food.
Yeah but 10 years ago it was just locals doing it and they only did a few runs, now its worldwide known and people travel so they have a lot more heats, theres technically more cheese now but to accommodate are now smaller

This girl is from my state, NC! Our local news channel has been repeating this story for several days now. Every time something tragic or super happy happens, NC says "Hold my beer", and we show up to win. Glad to see this happen at such a prestigious event, and international level.

But to be fair, have you ever tasted a Double Gloucester cheese? If you had, you might want to chase one rolling down a murderous muddy hill to try to score 7-9 pounds of it (the official cheese wheel size). Somerdale Cheesery makes a Double Gloucester flavored with chive and toasted onion called Cooper's Hill in honor of the event, and it may be the best damn cheese I've ever eaten. I put some on venison burgers over Memorial Day weekend, it was pure heavenly fire. I just bought it at a grocery store, though, no contusions or compound fractures required.
I seriously wonder how many people have been horrifically and permanently injured doing this over the years. Like “Yeahna, Sheila walks with a limp nowadays because of that cheese she crashed down a hill for back in 2011.”
What sort of waiver do you need to sign to participate in this Jack and Jill insurance risk bonanza? This is the only event I've ever seen where falling down a hill wasn't a tragedy or even an eventuality, it was a viable strategy!
I live in Canada. We have socialized healthcare. We are not encouraged to throw ourselves down a hill here after a rolling cheese wheel. Which is a pity.
I've been to coopers hill, it's about a 40 degree slope and there's a road and stone wall just behind the camera, which is why the line of catchers is needed. The health and safety police stopped it for a few years, it's good to see it back
