  • I needed a fast way to paint up all of these Kickstarter minis and decided to use the "dip" method. Super easy and requires only one coat of paint. Also made low walls for the map using Hirst Arts mold #88.

    I think it's so funny the way everyone who makes a polyshade/quickshade tutorial says the same thing..."Now, when you first put it on you may think, oh my gosh I just ruined my painted mini." Because that is EXACTLY what went through my head the first time I used it Lol. You have to just trust the process and let the stain work its magic. Nice job 👍

      I've been using Polyshades since 1994. Still have some of those miniatures I applied the Polyshades to, and they look the same, today, as they did then. Polyshades comes in many more colors/shades, from light brown to black. Polyshades costs 1/2 of what the Army Painter products cost. Spend your money as you see fit, but there is no issue in using Polyshades: I've painted Polyshades on 1,000+ miniatures (15mm - 75mm tall), and still counting. No problems other than what I created myself, not the product's fault, ever. Cheers!

    I think you could do the same "washing" with a 100% pledge future shine + ink. Because the pledge also has the same adhesives that really improve the flow, also it provides an acrylic protective coat without the smell... well a little smell, but not the same ugly one. Also it's easier to mix your own wash colors with standard inks that way.
    Many war model painters do it that way to cover up their planes with pledge future shine.

    Whenever you use mold release, you just need to soak/wash the casts with soapy water and a toothbrush. I usually let is soak in a dishsoap/water bath for a bit. Then lightly scrub with the toothbrush and rinse. That should remove any mold release, then you shouldn't have issues with paint. I do that with any resin whether I cast them or someone else does.

    • @gaminggeek241
      @gaminggeek241  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the compliment! Minwax is stinky and you definitely want to use it outside--that's why I have it in the garage with the door open. It doesn't smell as bad as resin or epoxy where I have to use a respirator and since you aren't turning it into an aerosol, you aren't breathing the stuff in that much.

    Got the mold and some smooth cast 300. Wow, they weren't kidding about 3 minutes of pour time. I was a bit slow, which caused and interesting effect. One of the walls didn't have a complete bottom, so I worked it over destroying the brick and stones above that area, and filed it down smooth. Now I have a "destroyed wall" marker to replicate when I make a mold. (I don't have those pre-made tokens, nor the doors). I'll try dipping them tonight and see what I get.

      Martin Davidsen Actually, it shouldn't be too hard to make them yourself. Follow the link to the manufacturer of the mold in the video description. They got a lot of different molds. One costs 34 USD. Shipping to Europe is a bit expensive - another 34 USD for up to six molds though. All in all, it should be cheaper than having somebody make them (and most probably send them to you from the US anyways)...
      Then just get some two-component resin...

    Love the walls. Bought the mold so I can try this as well. I also have the polyshades, but I like to thin them down a bit with mineral spirits before using them, especially if I dip them, as I think the polyshades are thicker than the Army Painter dips.
    I'm also wondering how it might turn out if the walls are dipped. Once I create some, I guess I'll have to test that out.

    Awesome video... I just started painting mini few weeks ago, soon I'll have to "seal" the paint. I've read the best way is to use gloss varnish and matt varnish (for dull effect) after. Is it better to paint the gloss varnish or spray is ok?

    • @gaminggeek241
      @gaminggeek241  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Spray gloss varnish is fine if you aren't using polyshades which has built in varnish in it so you can skip this step. You have to be careful with spray matte finish though. I've found the hard way that some spray matte varnish creates a strange spider-web effect that I think has to do with high humidity. That's why I use Testor's Dullcote because it never does this.
