    I am a security officer and the building I patrol had a feral cat roaming around. I began feeding her and slowly over two months of gaining her trust, I finally I brought her home last week! She is thriving and I am so happy I was able to give her a new life. Her name is Calliope, Callie for short and she truly has changed my life. I am so happy to give her a whole lifetime of bliss!

      I had a Blue cat sleeping in my garden, took a month to make friends as we were away for 2 weeks, but eventually I gained her trust.
      She had fleas, mites in her ears, eye problems, and a hernia from when she was a kitten, she was wearing a dog anti flea collar that had rubbed the skin off her neck and she had very little hair on her rear. Advertised her and when her owner contacted us and called her 'little scabby bottom' we threatened to report them for neglect at which point they lost interest. Gorgeous loving girl who with care and treatments looked absolutely fabulous.

      I'd be careful judging the owners who left him behind. We don't really know the circumstances, and so many rescues, fosters, and shelters are full. I currently care for 24 cats because where I moved in, they had an overrun cat colony. I have spent 5 years caring for these cats, who all have Feline Herpes Virus. In five years, I have only been able to find homes for two cats. Where I live has become very uncomfortable due to crime, and I really want to move. I have no real means to move my family out of here. I love all these cats very much - but what do you do? If no one else is willing or able to help, are you so bad for putting your children before these cats? I don't think so. Do I want to be forced to make that decision? Absolutely not. But life hits is in ways sometimes where we can't cover all our bases and we walk away hurt and defeated - the last thing we need is for people to start shaming and blaming. In fact, here I am. I have a ton of cats that need a good home. Want to help?

The last person moving happened to be a dog person that wasn’t planning on taking the cat. He told me that from what he knows, people just left the cat when they leave and she’d be outside until the next people will hopefully allow her to be indoor/outdoor cat, and so far she’s lucky that usually the people that moved there will at least feed her. She had been outside for at least a year when I was made aware of her and her situation. She was in very bad shape due to lack of shelter or food. How I know what happened to her was due to the fact that one of the neighbors told a friend of mine her story. Long story short, Molly is asleep on my bed as I write this. He looks like a cat I found when he was a very small kitten about five years ago. He showed up at my brother's house on his deck everyday. I was able to win his trust almost immediately. He would lay down at my feet whenever I would stand and would come running to me whenever I would stop by. I finally decided to take him home with me because my brother lives on a busy street and he didn't really like cats. I kept the little guy quarantined in my upstairs bathroom until I was able to take him to the vet to make sure he didn't have any diseases that could be passed on to our other cat. Luckily he passed with flying colors and five years later Merlyn has a loving home and has been inside since. He does have a screened in porch that he can go out whenever he wants to. Unlike a lot of cats, he acts more like a dog. He follows me wherever I go and has to be very close to me. I couldn't imagine ever leaving Merlyn behind if I was to ever move. Some people should NEVER have pets.

    • @whanethewhip
      @whanethewhip ปีที่แล้ว +31

      No, you don't understand. If you understood then you would not have included a 'shelter' as an option for your cat. Shelters do not provide shelter, they are killing plants built for the sole purpose of processing a large population of pets, through death.
      A cat brought to a shelter has 3 - 5 days to be adopted before it is killed. Imagine that cat you love, living in a cage for 5 days, surrounded by barking dogs, extremely scared and stressed out, then only to be killed 5 days after receipt, without you and by people your cat doesn't know or trust and that kill animals daily as their job and are completely heartless and without care. The reason shelters always have room, is because they killing daily. Think about the type of person that would get a job at a shelter killing pets every day, what kind of person do you think that is? Someone that loves cats?
      And rescues? You mention surrendering to a rescue as if you just walk in somewhere and it's all better. The problem with rescues is that they consist of individual volunteers that agree to foster a cat until a home can be found for it and the problem is that since they are not killed, foster options fill up fast. Many volunteer fosters will also only accept kittens, because they know they will get adopted out fast, so full grown cats get the shaft.
      There are strays in my neighborhood, one stray I have been feeding for 1.5 years is still a stray because no one will adopt here, and literally every local and non-local rescue I have contacted is 'beyond capacity'. And only about half of them even reply to say that.
      So what's left? Abandonment. Then the best chance that cat has is if the neighborhood puts out food and water bowls otherwise it will mainly live off of bugs, maybe some lizards or gophers, if it is a good hunter, birds and rodents very rarely.
      Even so, it's still better than a 'shelter' which is a 98% guarantee of death since they only adopt out roughly 2% of the cats that have been left with them.

    • @UnlimitedFlyers
      @UnlimitedFlyers ปีที่แล้ว +36

      While shelters do have their own unique situations and problems to contend with, they DO coordinate with rescues - provided they are aware of local groups and community efforts. Not all of them are the cruel, heartless slaughterhouses that some make of them.
      In the end, it all boils down to the people that work in all these efforts. *Training, Communication, Coordinated Efforts, Continuous Education of the Community about Trap, Neuter & Return; **_this_** is what we should all be agreeing on.*
      For the sake of other heartbroken felines like Ares used to be, so that not even a single cat be abandoned in the cold streets after living an indoor life and get the boot just like that.

    • @rosemarie7959
      @rosemarie7959 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@UnlimitedFlyers I agree 100%. Thanks for the comment :)

    • @whanethewhip
      @whanethewhip ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@UnlimitedFlyers No, not where Ares is, shelters don't coordinate with rescues, and rescues are beyond capacity and so there is nothing to coordinate even if they did. And here, most rescue fosters are holding out for kittens.
      The selective rescue you see in this video (cats of SB) doesn't even reply to calls, instead they look for cats in the worse condition because they get more YT views that way. So they wont bother with me or others here that call or email them because the strays are normal strays, not like the one in this video.
      The street I'm on (also in SB) has a bunch of strays, I feed 3 in addition to my own. I myself called the same 'rescue' you see in this video 3x to rescue a spayed stray, they didn't return a single call, not even to say 'sorry but we're at capacity' like all of the other rescues in SB and OC county. And the reason I only look for a home for her is because she wants to be an indoor cats, the other 2 that I feed prefer to be outside.
      Do note that Ares was a stray for 2 years and this was not an issue for him or the people in the neighborhood that fed him until AFTER he got mange which any cat can get, stray or otherwise. The cat was not in some sad state as a result of being a stray, it was in a sad state as a result of getting Mange long after he was abandoned. Also not that it then took another 7 months for the foster to find him a home AFTER rescue because most people want kittens and pass up adult cats. This is why I roll my eyes at people that jump in here saying "just find her a new home" like that easily happens in a couple of months.
      So when you take all of this in consideration factoring in 'rescues' that do what THEY want, not what the public wants, because they are privately ran, and that shelters are killing plants... law enforcement and animal control in SB wont take a cat to the shelter when the owner dies, instead they will put it out of the house, because they know that is the best chance a cat has and because as a public office, they don't (and can't) coordinate with rescues either.
      There is a huge gopher population here that is their staple, that and food/water that people in the neighborhood put out. The biggest danger for cats in SB are coyotes, this applies to strays and indoor/outdoor cats but the cats here know how to avoid, except in one case, a poor Siamese cat and it wasn't a stray.
      One minor correction, it's the hot streets of SB, not the cold streets. This is SoCal and it rarely gets too cold for cats in the winter. It can however reach unsafe heat levels for a cat during the summer months and so in SB most cats are under shade during the day and out at night during the summer months.

    A year ago this month I took in an outdoor kitten. He hid from me for three days under the couch. He then came out and started sleeping right over my head every night for two weeks. After that, he just started laying in the crease of my legs at night. I named him Cassie Cat because I thought he was a she.. Lol.. I am so in love with my Cassie Cat. He is extremely intelligent. He's working on opening the door now by the handle. He understands everything that I say to him. He's very vocal. We went to the vet and got his shots. Such a big boy. He's my baby. I'm so glad that I let my friend bring him to me. My friend, knowing the big heart I have said that if anyone would love and care for that kitten it would be me. Such a compliment. The day before Cassie came I went to Walmart and spent $163 buying stuff for him even though I had never laid eyes on him. I buy him new stuff all the time. He's my baby. Let me not forget to mention the fact that I'm living with cancer. I was reluctant to accept a pet because of my illness. I'm doing well, thank God, but I know that with cancer things can change at any given time. I try not to think about what could happen. I have a beautiful new granddaughter and Cassie Cat. I strive everyday because I want to be here for my grandkids and Cassie needs me.

    I adopted a senior cat at my local shelter just over a year ago. The local pound had found him roaming the streets and brought him to the shelter about 3 weeks prior to my adopting him. Due to the fact that he had a tattoo inside his left ear, they were able to contact the owners and were told that they didn't want him anymore. I just couldn't believe that and my heart just sank and felt so sad for my sweet buddy, they must have cared for him at some point for they did all the right things, had him tattooed, neutered. How could they abandon him just like that when in his senior years this is when he needs them the most. I comfort myself in the fact that if they hadn't given him up, I wouldn't have the joy of being his new "mum" . He is a true cuddle bug, who loves nothing more than being smothered in kisses and being hugged. Well, I hope he does, he doesn't try to escape my grasp which must mean something, right? He celebrated his 16th birthday on June past, and may he be with me for a few more years to come. By the way, I'd like to make one remark, please avoid picking up an adult cat by the scruff, they're no longer kittens thus weigh a lot more and it can be very painful. Consider what the rescuer does as an exception given the circumstances.

    AWW I am absolutely in love with him. I cannot for the life of me understand why people would just leave their pets behind.

    My Rottweiler was left in the backyard of someone’s home. I was horrified when I saw her. She had been sitting back there for two months without eating. I’m happy to say a year and a half later she’s my best friend and it was the most rewarding thing I’ve ever done in my life.

    In the end the previous owner didn’t deserve him. That’s their loss not Ares! He got a real home with someone who truly loved him! That’s the best love story❤️I believe the animals chose us and not visa versa! They provide us with so much more then I feel they get credit for❤️ animals are such a gift! I can’t imagine this lonely world w/o our beloved pets🙏🏼

    2 of my cats were also just left behind by shitty owners. One, my heart cat, finally passed away 2 months ago at more or less age 8 years 💔😭 The other one is still going strong at about 9 years old ❤️

      I'm so glad you found them and became their family. That's how I became my heart cat Sid's mom. Someone dumped him and his brother in a box in my front yard during a rare southern snowstorm. We had 16 blissful years together.

      I have 3 cats, 2 who are half-brothers. Are they sad for a long time when one passes away? Or do they generally get over it quickly?

      💔 I'm a mom to 2 abandoned cats. I'm sorry for the pain of your loss but thankyou for keeping a soft heart in this harsh world!

    It really breaks my heart to know people get kittens and puppies as pets and the second they grow up or the family moves due to circumstances, they just leave the animal behind and abandon them. But in saying that it's heart warming to see videos like this that people do this stuff for animals and find them forever homes ❤️

    Heartbreaking indeed but when Aries found his mom in the end it fills you with joy.

    So sad 😞 for that cat 🐈.. who must have loved his owners and probably did not understand why they left him... pets are for life.. they are not a toy you can treat terribly and just discard when you get fed up or they become an inconvenience... shame on those who treat living creatures that way.. Thank you for saving him😊

      This happened to a neighbors cat across from my in-laws, they did not abandon her but from what I heard they mistreated her and she ran off. I was in my in law back yard when I came across the emaciated cat, I wanted to cry. I fed and watered her over my in laws objections but then she ran off. Next time we came over we found the cat was coming back around and my in laws were feeding her daily. The next time I came by she was in the house, now adopted by the in laws. She stayed (and was very loved) until she passed away a few years later. Some people are reluctant adopters, but when they make that decision it is final. 💖😻💖

      And shame on people who still claim nonhuman animals are objects to own instead of family members and equal animals. But that’s expected from people who sadly still have the slaveowner mentality and claim to own other animals like us.
