  • Makalani Lua, a magnificent 58-foot cutter-rigged pilothouse motor-sailor, was born out of the visionary mind of movie director Robert Wise back in 1990. Designed as a custom yacht, every detail was meticulously crafted to ensure a vessel fully equipped for extensive cruising. From the moment you lay eyes on her, it's clear that Makalani Lua is a work of art.
She sports a beam of 15'2" and a draft of 6'4", providing a harmonious balance of stability and maneuverability, allowing her to gracefully glide through the water. Built to endure, she has a solid one-inch fiberglass hull, expertly crafted below the waterline, and the teak decks and cabin trunks exude a sense of strength and elegance.
One of the standout features of Makalani Lua is the remarkable level of redundancy built into the vessel. From the unique dual Perkins turbo diesels to the multiple electric winches and backup anchors, redundancy is at the core of this amazing vessel. The inclusion of systems such as two GPS receivers, two anchors, four VHF radios and multiple heating methods means that any bluewater adventure can be undertaken with the utmost confidence.
The thoughtfully crafted layout of Makalani Lua ensures that every aspect of living aboard has been considered. When you enter the spacious pilothouse, you are greeted by panoramic views courtesy of her oversized windows, allowing you to immerse yourself in the ever-changing landscapes. With the 220V heater and the 45000 btu forced air heater, connected to a Webasto diesel furnace, even the most chilly days at sea are met with coziness and comfort.
Owning Makalani Lua is an extraordinary lifestyle choice, combining the thrill of adventure, the tranquility of the open seas, and the comforts of a luxury home. This yacht is a testament to craftsmanship, providing a timeless haven where you can create lasting memories, indulge in breathtaking experiences, and live a life of unparalleled freedom.

id love to see the condition of the bottom. sandblasting paint, stripping gelcoat, repairing blisters, on the entire length of a boat this size would cost around $40,000.

That isn't any "blue water" boat, or they would have never designed that forward cockpit like that. One storm in the roaring 40's, and those windows are blown out. Plus, they put those mast climbers all the way up. All those holes drilled make for a weaker mast.

I'm not sure if any pilothouse motor cruiser is truly a blue water cruiser capable of all conditions.........but I know I would feel so confident on this one with her high and solid rails and huge sidewalks.......this would make me much more confident, in heavy conditions, of leaving the pilothouse to attend to something that absolutely has to be attended to.
I'd probably prefer an extra 100 gallons of fuel and just one engine......or just heaps more room to service that one engine. But two is nice and redundancy is beautiful.
Love that the V berth is not a v berth....lol......great option having the wet area forward and the berth more centred.....galley probably the best space for no watch crew to have the best sleep in rougher weather!

Have you thought of doing some of the older Nautor Swans? Hear me out...
The prices of Swans fall with age like the other brands, but their boats just don't age the same. A lot of the older boats are in absolutely extraordinary condition. It is a very high fraction.
A Swan 59 is about the same price as a Beneteau 50. It is 15 years older, but still (on average) in tremendously better condition and is a much bigger and more capable offshore (obviously).

If I ever build a sailing vessel, the only engine aboard will be a generator to run the electrical system during bad weather. If I decide to have engines that help move it, they'll be outboards so fixing them is a lot easier. Heck, I might use a hot bulb engine off of a Lanz Bulldog tractor so I don't have to have a reverse gear. If it works, it's not stupid.

    • @das564
      @das564 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Having an outboard does make access easier. The downside is having all that weight at the extreme end of the boat, which tends to promote hobby-horsing. If you're designing the boat yourself, you can build in a well somewhere further forward, but then your access problem comes back.

I see two big (dare I say huge) flaws with the pilothouse design. First, there's basically zero outdoor space to enjoy a meal or relax unless you're going to sit on the deck or bring out a folding table and chairs. Second, access to the starboard sheet winch is just silly. Are you really supposed to run out the portside door, run around the back of the pilothouse, sheet in and run back? Makes shorthanded tacking interesting, no?

Not everybody sails around the Caribbean or Florida when you practically live outside. If you sail in cold climate or foul weather regularly you appreciate it.

Why would you run around when tacking? All lines are run into the wheelhouse.

What is so tough about fetching a couple of folding deck chairs with a small table ? There could be a good reason for keeping the deck clear of fixed furniture at other times.

A very good looking yacht, but over equiped. And that will be a great becoming problem. Y will be able to sail from mechanic to mechanic, unless y are self a very experienced and electronic whizard.
To have two engines is a loss off space on a sailboat and not needed, because y have sails.
The space which remains in the engine room now is unworkable for regular maintenance and for some bigger maintenance y have to break 1/2 the stern apart.

Good northern boat, but with no cockpit and no exterior helm it wouldn’t be good in the warm climate.

All of those lines running all over the deck looks pretty rediculous. A bit of a spder's web.

I'm quite sure the woodwork was not made by a marine woodworker.
Also there is a lot of wasted space which is quite problematic with such a bid boat : you may need more than three crew members (ie. two couples). No quarter berth, useless space for the shower, no berth for extra hands… on this size of boats it is not a luxury to be 6 onboard.
A lot of useless redudency (such as a mini chart table below which is useless. Helm station far form the front of the dog house is not very practical in case of heavy weather where you need to be as close as possible to see what's outside.
Not helm outside this boat is definitely designed to NEVER cross the low latitudes and go in the southern hepisphere.
I don't see the advantage of a twin engine on a boat designed to sailing, unless it is designe to sail in th arctic, but then again is the hull plastic or steel?
However I do like the watertight bulkhead door. But I don't see any in the back, so this is somewhat useless…
All in all this is a big no. No I wouldn't buy this boat.
