Can I just say man. I wholeheartedly think the Abzorbaloff is a hilariously good monster. His dialogue actually works with comedic timing and Love and Monsters just works on so many levels as a great meta/comedy episode of Doctor Who and I want to thank you for making a cult classic Alien!

I always thought that Peter Kay's portrayal was the tale of two performances. Like when he's in his human form, He was, to my memory, genuinely creepy in a soft-spoken, obsessive kind of way. When he's the Abzorbaloff, he hams it up like all classic Dr Who monsters. I personally feel it was the disconnect between the two that turned off a lot of people.

As funny as I find that fact now, I legitimately couldn't sleep without the covers over my head until I was about 12 out of fear of the Absorbaloff coming through my door and absorbing me. There was a lot of body horror in that era of Dr Who, and yours somehow managed to scare me the most. Legitimately couldn't watch the episode for years after because of it. So well done I guess!

I have to say, I _loved_ the concept of the absorbalov. I creature that absorbs its victims, keeping them conscious as part of its being, forever trapped within it, even being denied the sweet release of death, is something I find terrifying.
One could probably find similar creatures (I for one have vague memories of a turtle creature from an anime that kept souls forever in torment as faces growing out of its shell) but being as you were nine at the time, I wouldn't have supposed you'd even heard of them, let alone plagiarised them.

  • @SWSe2

I usually like it when Doctor Who can hop between genres and settings so effortlessly, and sometimes goes experimental. The first modern Doctor lite story told from strangers' perspectives, and the characters were nice enough. Only started watching the show in 2017, but I enjoyed that at the time!
I sometimes wondered what the creator of the Abzorbaloff thought of it after hearing about the competition, cool to hear this!

Agree with it all. I recall entering myself, many years ago. Had a monster that could only live in hot climates, a reverse Cryon. But its interesting what you say. We re-evaluate. Maybe in a few years people will re-evaluate this period and think it's better then they thought first time round. The ep is disliked but on these watchthroughs coming back to eps they've been more enjoyable. After 15 years maybe Love and Monsters will be pretty good.
And yes, we've had trouble with less pleasant fans, we know the sort, who turn fandom into a joyless activity or even use fandom as an excuse to be nasty. I won't give names but I think we know a few...
The ep might well have problems but it must have been wonderful to see your creation there. The thought that somehow you contributed. When the fanfics I write go up on the Lockdown website it so delights me, feeling I've done something.
And I'm glad you enjoyed yourself. To meet the people from your fave show must have been a dream come true for a child. And it will be great you can contribute to this Tweetalong.
I've sent in a monster and a fanfic (monster isn't in fanfic). If nothing else it was fun to do.
Look forward to getting involved in this tomorrow!

I remember watching love and monsters as a kid, about 5 at the time. And obviously rewatching it in later tears. But this episode always stuck with me. Genuinely liked the absorbaloff as a monster, much more interesting than just killing people, and the look through a random person’s eyes was a real nice touch, a feature that also helped made one of doctor who’s famous monsters stand out. The first episode of the weeping angels.

Admittedly, I felt that the episode isn't truly bad, it has some comedic moments, and it was new territory for the series, an episode focusing more on those that have encountered the Doctor, and how their obsession with finding them again is what ultimately dooms them, a subtle foreshadowing with how the story will end with many of the Doctor's companions in the upcoming series, and giving a bit of time to Jackie, a character that is often overlooked. The Abzorbaloff does come across as a juvenile creation, but that's what it was intended to be, a monster designed by a child for a competition, and I feel any short comings of the episode were mostly because this was being filmed at the same time as the Impossible Planet and the Satan Pit, meaning a lot more time and resources were being given to another episode - in fact, the latter half of series 2, save for the two part stories, did feel a bit rushed, not feeling on equal footing as the first half of the series. Admittedly, I think the Abzorbaloff may have come across as more intimidating if, rather than just straight up consuming flesh and assimilating bio mass, it was a slow process, where in beguiling an individual, they feed off their emotions and psyche as well, a bit like Ruby White in "Goodbye, Sarah Jane Smith". Once the person becomes a shell of their former self as the Abzorbaloff consumes more and more of the victim, that's when they assimilate the flesh - when they can convince their ailing prey into becoming "whole" again,, once their will is spent and they cannot resist.
And I reckon many people watching the show and seeing a fan's creation being made into a character presumably inspired them to want to come up with concepts for the show, and invest themselves into the series, so there's also that.

I don't get the hate for this episode. The minimal use of the Doctor makes him more mysterious and shows us how much mystique and power he evokes to regular people. I like the use of ELO's Mr. Blue Sky, the awesome bonus alien the Hoix, the way we get to know Elton as a character, and the Abzorbaloff is actually quite threatening and creepy in some scenes.

Honestly I was 4 or 5 when I first saw love and monsters in 2006 and I was scared
To me abzorbaloff was utterly terrifying
Especially the whole part of the faces being conscious (and how unsettling the chase was after the absorption)
It's one of the 2 things from doctor who that had ever scared me (the other being the slitheen because well look at them they're fast and literally hollow people out)
But seriously it was really unsettling for a 4 year old and it's something that stuck with me for at least 10-11 years before I went and rewatched it for the first time (the slitheen had the Sarah Jane adventures so I got used to seeing them a lot in the franchise in comparison)

Fear Her is far, far worse than Love & Monsters. Peter Kay did a pretty good performance for what he did. The episode has issues with the screenplay structure and how it is all over the place. But I respect what it was going for especially from

I guess the bodyswap with Jessie didn't last long then. Seriously, you're not at fault for how the episode and the creature actually turned out. Also, how many people can actually say they created a Doctor Who monster? Ok, probably a lot of people, but it's still an awesome thing to achieve.

Ye know the idea of the absorbaloph is actual quite good, especially for a nine year old.
Unfortunately it ended up like that, but hay, it means you’re design will forever be remembered

Even though I’m really not a fan of love of monsters, I really adore the idea of the abzorrbaloff and its putrid design. I think if the episode was handled with more care and took a more dark/emotional turn instead cringey, I think it would’ve been pretty good.

I also sent in a monster for this competition. My monster was made of ropes and could latch on to you and burn you alive. It could also combust and reappear anywhere it liked.
I got a runner up prize (which was that 2005 aliens and monsters book) and not an OFFICIAL blue peter badge, but just a little flat circle one. Both of these items are now lost.
I do wish I could have got my design back though as it's probably one of the only designs I worked hard on and was also probably the only good art I've ever made.

Wow! You're the kid who created the love and monsters villain. So cool! I thought the monster you came up with was pretty good for what it's worth. How many people can say they created a Doctor Who monster? 🙂😁 The episode itself is a nice character piece about those who live in the world of Doctor Who. People who experience all the madness that happens and try to work out what's going on. It's a interesting concept.

I feel like if the Absorbalof was designed better by the Doctor Who staff, as well as combined with better writing. I feel like this episode could've been an instant classic.

That is so cool, you`re the one who won the blue peter contest and created the Abzorbaloff.
    I remember that contest.
Now you`re a well known You Tuber.
Well thank you for a memorable monster that we got to see on TV long ago.

someone posted a link here to a review of the episode. RTD as Doctor Who showrunner does seem to have a habit of making up quotes for the papers - the excuse Davies made for Eccleston quitting which affected his career seems to have had more serious consequences. Eccleston still doesn't like Davies and his team to this day.
Great to hear about your experience winning this competition as a kid and getting to see behind the scenes of your favourite show.

here's an interesting historical tidbit the design a monster contest by Blue Peter was first started in 1967 and entries included the Steel Octopus, the Hypnotron and the Aquaman and these winning entries became props and these villains where mentioned in the novel the English Way of Death by Gareth Roberts published in the 90's

The concept of Abzorbaloff wasn't worse than many other monster designs in Doctor Who. I think the episode could have been great if the acting was better in some parts, the details of the story were reworked and the writing had sharper humor.

I think the Abzorbaloff is a perfect monster idea. Peter Kay works alright as Victor Kennedy but the weird switch to a Northern accent is odd and the tonal change ('tastes like chicken') sort of throws it off. But it's a comedy episode

I think they could bring it back as a 2 parter but have 4 or 5 with them absorbing people then the doctor comes and they grow to their full length, you see them on a space ship heading towards earth revenging the one in love and monsters, one could take the Tardis, each one having different that needs to snap for them to melt.

Looking back, I think the character writing is what made the episode a flop. Yeah, the monster was grotesque, but that's the point. Plus it's still cool to hear about your personal experience as the kid who designed the monster. In other words, you're cool and I'm glad you had a great time!

  • @theuberbob

I quite like "Love and Monsters", for the most part. I just think the ending is a bit much. I thought Peter Kay did a fine job and it's sad to hear that he now slags it off, probably after having heard too many times that it's supposedly the "worst" Who episode. Had no idea it was you that created it - that's really awesome. Take care and stay safe!

I saw a comment on a Jay Excis video. That’s cool you make videos. The monster may have been in a bad episode (or the worst lol) but the fact a version of your monster got in an episode is still a W.
Edit: I don’t think it’s that bad of an episode. I would like an anthology series or someway for fans to have contribute to the series.

Watching this video actually inspired me to re-watch Love and Monsters after so long and... it's become something of a guilty pleasure for me. Don't get me wrong, there are definitely some cringy moments (how the BBC ever approved that "love life" joke is beyond me), but it does have its own charm. It also frequently features ELO's Mr Blue Sky and that song, no matter the context, always puts me in a good mood.
