I had this exact same problem on my XPS 15 9550 where the battery was bulging, affecting the track pad, the keyboard & eventually died. I ordered myself a replacement battery from Amazon, the ifixit pro toolkit and watched this video this morning to make sure I was following the steps correctly, particularly the bit for disconnecting the battery itself. Good clear video which was simple to follow. Many thanks!
This video should be the GOLD STANDARD for how 'How To' and 'DIY' videos should be presented. Spectacular work Joseph! Your video made what for me was a little scary as simple as frying an egg! Thank you!
Wow, what a beautiful, lucid explanation. The video, narration, and directions are perfect. Thanks so much for putting this video up there. I'm now not afraid to change my battery. As someone said, this video should be the gold standard for how to change your battery on a Dell XPS 15. Also, the ifixit pro toolkit is a great idea. Thanks for doing this.
Thank you so much. Frankly I've been very frustrated with Dell's lack of support (in Hong Kong) and this video definitely gave me the courage to buy a battery online and replace it on my dining table. You have definitely saved a lot of lives with this video!!! You absolute champ!!!
Thank you. I didn't go to Amazon but through Dell Support first for diagnostics because the laptop suddenly got very hot and then the front-edge light turned amber and started flashing.. and then, of course, the laptop shut down. Dell Support was pretty helpful in diagnosing but when they asked for an appointment time for a Dell sales rep to call, Dell sales never called. Instead another Dell Support rep started sending me emails to diagnose the problem. Dell is not what it was years ago, sadly. I tried to go to Amazon to get the battery myself but I was not confident enough to make a selection. Long, long story short, I paid 3x what you did. My battery just arrived but I didn't have the right tools so I took your suggestion and ordered the tools from Amazon. My Dell Support runs out on January 6th - I am literally watching the clock. However, thank you for your very helpful and concise video -- I know that I can do this. 💙
I had the same problem...the battery ballooned, and it was so bad the mouse pad stopped functoning properly even after the battery was replaced. The guy on the phone from India was rude and insisted I had to send the computer someplace, and I couldn't do without my computer for the weeks it would take to have it serviced. This was the third and last Dell I will ever own. They lost a customer through this. So much for the $300 I spent on an extended warranty that didn't do me much good. Thanks for the video. I will buy the battery online and replace this time myself.

I got my XPS in 2016 and within 2 years I had the battery bulge issue, luckily I got it replaced under warranty (no recall which I found odd). Anyway after almost 5 years I noticed the trackpad starting to rise up again at one corner - so time to replace myself (warranty expired) so thanks for this. By the way the Dell service guy told me at the time that the issue was some kind of failed charge limiter on the battery which caused it to heat up and one way to combat that was to allow the battery to discharge i.e., not keep it plugged into the AC all the time.
I appreciate this video. My laptop won't power on or charge anymore. Wont even power on when plugged direct. The battery did not appear swollen and I'm trying to troubleshoot the issue. I plan on replacing the battery in hopes it helps
Thanks dude big help. Both sides of my battery felt like they were full, so trackpad could have popped up anytime. Wasn't sure if I should open it up, but you made it look easy. Cheers 🙏👍🙂
Yeah man that's the plus with PC's. They are super easy to breakdown and do your own stuff. No need to spend a bunch of money for someone else to do it.
have tried to buy an amazon replacement battery, my xps 9570 notifies me "not the official battery from dell for this system" can not pass the supportAssisant pre-system check. very sad, have to return the battery to amazon
Glad to know it is this doable. My 9560's battery is down to half capacity now. Considering ordering a new battery this summer, just to keep the laptop going until it is really "dead of old age". I'm happy with the performance still, and really see no reason to upgrade to a new machine right now.
Anyone have any tips for removing the small screws that hold the battery in place. No matter how hard i try I can not unscrew a single one. They are starting to get stripped and I am getting worried. Regretting my decision to handle this myself. 😬
great video, OMG, having recently purchased a 2018 dell 15 7590, I was not made aware of a swelling battery issue. I am curious as to know if you have hade to replace the battery more than once and how long are the batteries rated to last? Was there any error and or alert that the Windows OS gave you in your discovery of the battery problem, that is did you perform a diagnostic which informed you prior? This really sucks, to where I may now consider returning the laptop for this reason. Thanks
I replaced the battery but my Dell XPS 9560 does not recognize it so it won't charge. I followed the directions from the battery manufacturer in case this happens, but it still won't charge. Now the battery has dropped the zero charge. Do you know what to do to the bios to make it recognize a new battery? Is Dell doing this to make you buy their $130 battery?
Did you try using the 97 Wh battery? I am going to replace my 56Wh in my 9550 for the 6cell one, but I see there is a new 97Wh same size and voltage, and it would me great if fits.
I have the exact question. As I did research online I found that few people did replace 97wh battery to the xps 9550 but I don't know how long it gonna last for that.
Not sure what the situation is internationally but this was an issue with this XPS model and as it was such a common fault Dell was replacing the batteries, trackpad and keyboard (if necessary) even outside of warranty. At least this was the case in Australia. I got all of those components replaced in an onsite service 3 years after purchase and there was no charge. 1 year later the motherboard died anyway - Dell - never again
I have the exact problem! my trackpad is lifted and I thought it was super strange since I don't use it often. I'm going to give it a try and call them. I'm super scared to open any program that might swell the battery any further...
I called them right after this comment. Said would only do if I could shell out +$200-$300. Was super pissed but found a battery on amazon for $119 and followed this tutorial. So thank you! Just a concern, after replacing the battery, I noticed my laptop heated up quite fast...is this normal?
@@thelittlegirliwas I'm glad I could help! I never experienced heating issues but you can check more specifically if the battery is heating. Run a could heavy tasks on your computer and see if the battery is heating. Remember it goes across the front where your wrists sit, the CPU will generally make the computer heat up under the keyboard. I do alot of video editing on mine and it gets to some serious temperatures but no problems with the new battery.
@@jmwilson93 Thanks for the reply! I actually had to update my Nvidia graphics and the battery stopped derping out 😅. But I loved how easy it was to replace the battery thanks to your tutorial!! Thanks again!
Good Video but, IMPORTANT!!!!! Safe your Bios Options in a Custom File, or make Screenshots of the Boot- Secureboot and system settings. Before you replace the battery. My system forgot all the settings (date, boot partition etc.) and wont start anymore in windows. I tryed it 2 hours, my system bios goes alone to raid and cant start windows. Enable AHCI was the solution for me. Now it works great.
Hey man! I'd like to know how would I tell when to change the battery inside my laptop. Inside, the Lithium Packs were not bulging out ridiculously. My Battery Report says 2019-12-29 59,969 mWh 97,003 mWh. And I currently get 3 hours and 30 minutes on a full charge. It's been about 1 year and 6 months on my Dell XPS 9570 i9 and it's an extreme workhorse! I just want to make sure I change the battery at an appropriate time and I don't want to wait to long where it just dies on me!
Keep monitoring your battery report. Once the Full Charge Capacity reaches below 50% of the its Design Capacity then it is usually time to replace it or keep a spare just in case. The XPS 15 Battery life span is usually around 2 years with frequent gaming and daily use.
Sorry for commenting so late. I just got myself a used one with a track pad that doesn't "click", but it's not even lifted. Do you think trying to change the battery would possibly fix this?
There have been innumerable issues with the batteries Dell used on the XPS laptops to the extent that you can't even get replacements from Dell anymore.
Hi Joseph. Can I use this laptop without battery at all? I'm planning to take it out but there is absolutely no way for me to get a new one nowadays. Will it still work usung the plugin cable only?
Bought an installed the same battery you did in a 9560. noticed the wattage was only 85 vs 97wh of my old one. Laptop boots fine but says the battery is not authentic and will not charge . . . any way to fix that?
Never encountered that with mine but also, I bought the battery specifically for the 9550. There were changes the next year to the 9560 so that could be why. You need to look for one for your exact model.

Joseph Wilson well I replaced my battery thanks to your helpful video. Sadly, my touchpad did not work again. I’ll have to look up how to fix that. Shame these flagship laptops were plagued with so many issues. Never buying a dell again
Can i put in a 97wh battery into my laptop which has the 56wh battery? I have an xps 9550 from years ago and still use it now. I have the 56wh battery and it has 2 hard drives, 2.5inch ssd and a 32gb m.2 ssd which came with the system. Can i use a 97wh battery and put that in place of the 56wh battery if i remove the 2.5inch ssd? I read you can do this with the 84wh battery but what about the 97wh? 6GTPY is the model of the 97wh battery, so if its that model, will it 100% work on the xps 15 9550?
The intake is on the bottom. The heat pipes then push the air out of the back. I have done this before. Take the bottom panel off. There are 2 fans that you can easily take off with a small screwdriver and clean off. Also, make sure you dust of the heat fins on the metal pipes. Those seem to collect the most dust.
Had to replace my XPS battery after 3.5 yrs. Dell would not sell a 'new' battery and instead I was offered a 'refurbished' battery costing lots €€€ and had to send my original battery back to them. I thought this was an odd way to do business. If I had known Dell were awkward about the battery I would not have bothered with them
Good Video instruction and thank you, and may I ask how this replacement battery is preforming? Some of those re-sold Dell OEM Batteries can be years old. I bought three cheap Chinese replacement batteries sold as "genuine", "OEM", "authentic" Dell replacement, only to find they were LITHIUM POLYMER! and not Lithium-Ion as the original Dell battery was. Dell replacement batteries, primarily because they're simply too dangerous and too much of a liability to the manufacture and the end users. I STRONGLY SUGGEST CAUTION WHEN BUYING CHEAP CHINESE LAPTOP BATTERIES, as Lithium Polymer is the most short lived and MOST DANGEROUS BATTERY chemistry, and there is a reason Dell and other laptop manufacturers don't use lithium polymer batteries, primarily the risk of explosion, fire and serious injury or even death. Furthermore, two of the three batteries I bought were thicker and prevented the trackpad from functioning (clicking). Three batteries had charging issues, and with two of them the laptop would rarely boot from battery, and/or would randomly power off. One battery I used for two weeks, that was sold as a genuine authentic OEM battery (it was not), after 10 charge and discharge cycles begin to perform erratically and swell. It now takes about 120 W hours of charge power to charge, gets fairly warm and only delivers about 51 hours of battery life. Now that I realize that these replacement batteries are lithium polymer rather than lithium ion, I removed it immediately. I believe those who make and sell such fake batteries are not only unconscionable, but should be prosecuted. primarily because they're simply too dangerous and too much of a liability to the manufacture and the end users.
I bought it back when it was brand new and I’ve had no issues with it up until today (July 2020) I started to notice the track pad is slightly lifted on the front. Even with the slight lift in the track pad I’ve had no issues with the laptop it’s the sane as when I purchased it. Now looking for a new battery as I’m afraid it may lead to damage to the internals down the line.
Just leaving this here... Dear Dell, we paid quite a premium for these laptops, so when this kind of thing happens, the expectation is to get some support in return. It's not a battery that died because of age, it didn't swell up because of the user did something wrong. You should have replaced these no matter what. For me this is important, and for my next laptop I will be sure to look somewhere else for premium customer support, as we are paying for it anyway. Thank you.

I honestly have no idea. I haven't looked into those. Read into it to see if it is compatible. Make sure you can return it if not
Thanks Jo
What size is your Phillips screwdriver you're using to remove the battery?
I tried a slightly bigger size and the screws threaded without much force
Not sure the exact size but the screws aren't that small. Nothing like the screws on the backplate
In the Ifixit kit, you'll need the T5 screw tip and for the Inner screw and Battery screws, you will need a Philips Number 1 Screw head !
Can someone help me Im trying to air dust my xps 15 9550 and I dont know where the intake or the dust exit is
The intake is on the bottom. The heat pipes then push the air out of the back. I have done this before. Take the bottom panel off. There are 2 fans that you can easily take off with a small screwdriver and clean off. Also, make sure you dust of the heat fins on the metal pipes. Those seem to collect the most dust.
I got the same problem with my battery. Push track pad up
Thnx for the great video! How well does this laptop run after almost 4 years?
Still runs amazing. I edit thousands of photos and do lots of video on it all the time.
Great video mate
Very helpful. Thank you sir
I need one very badly, can you help me get one?
Hey Joseph I just replaced my battery. And when I unplug it when it shows battery being Almost full. The laptop half shuts off. Can you please help
I'm sorry I haven't encountered that problem. I would resort to contacting Dell and reading up on some technical forums
Had to replace my XPS battery after 3.5 yrs. Dell would not sell a 'new' battery and instead I was offered a 'refurbished' battery costing lots €€€ and had to send my original battery back to them. I thought this was an odd way to do business. If I had known Dell were awkward about the battery I would not have bothered with them
Many thanks, you made me save €100 ! 🏆
Helpful video. Thanks.
Thank you!
I own a XPS 15 9560 and have had a hard time finding a reliable source to buy a battery. Does anyone have any suggestions?
You can open up the computer and see if it's the same model battery that I use then order it. If not just try amazon and look for good ratings.
How is this laptop today? is it alive and functioning? I've heard that original batteries may lead to damage main board
My memory cards have been damaged, no idea if that was from the battery
Just leaving this here... Dear Dell, we paid quite a premium for these laptops, so when this kind of thing happens, the expectation is to get some support in return. It's not a battery that died because of age, it didn't swell up because of the user did something wrong. You should have replaced these no matter what. For me this is important, and for my next laptop I will be sure to look somewhere else for premium customer support, as we are paying for it anyway. Thank you.
Agreed
How long original battery worked?
Thank you very much!
Would this work for a dell xps 13? What kind of baterries would you recommend btw?
I am not sure. I have never opened an XPS 13. You could open it and see if it has the same layout and just find the battery model listed on it.
Thanks man!
Thanks! Really helpful!
How is the battery holding up a year later?
It's working great!
Can u send the link for the battery to me so that I can buy it
do you think the uncorreptable error is related to this?
What error? Im not sure what you are referring to.
@@jmwilson93 mm my computer overheated really fast and then shows the blue screen calling it WHEA error
