Side note: You (who ever reads this) could cloned the drive using macurum reflect before swapping out the SSD. To make it easer, get a external M.2 empty case install the new drive in said external case then plug it into the USB port. Clone the drive, then swap them out (take the drive out of case and take old drive out of laptop then swap). Then take your old drive and install it into the external case and now you have a portable M.2 drive. Also you can help friends out if they want to make the swap later on using the external case.

I was a certified technician for a variety of brands for 10 years and am now a consultant for research scientists (but still do plenty of pc repairs and upgrades) and there is no reason to disconnect the battery for these upgrades. so long as you make sure that the computer is off before you begin, there shouldn't be any risky power going through any parts you would be working in and around. so long as you don't go licking traces, you'll be fine. m.2 drives, ram, and wifi cards can easily and properly be installed without disconnecting the battery.

There was no need to physically REMOVE the battery, but it is prudent to DISCONNECT the battery when swapping out any MB-connected hardware. It just isn't worth the possibility of any current to flow through the system while working on it.

    To all:
    before following Sara's step, please
    1. install Macrium Reflect (free software)
    2. Use Macrium Reflect to clone your existing SSD data to your new SSD (which mean copy the exactly the same data to your new SSD, but don't try using only copy & paste, use this software)

Yes Dell gives you an actual PDF of how to open the laptop and change just about all the parts.

  • @literate-aside
    @literate-aside 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I enjoyed the video; simple, informative and fun. I actually plan to do the same with my older 9560, including an undervolt and cpu/gpu repaste. It would’ve been nice to see you do the same while you were in there. The difference it made to my spectre x360 was surprising.
Also, you’d have had a much easier time by just cloning the drive and writing the iso to the new drive.
Additionally I’d like to quickly counter a point you made around the 1:00 minute mark; the existing SSD is *very* fast, and whilst the incredible 970pro you installed is significantly faster, you wouldn’t notice in normal operation, only in very specific workloads, and synthetic benchmarks.
One nitpick aside it was a dope video, so thanks.

I use up the whole 16GB RAM with just Lightroom and Photoshop open at the same time so expanding to 32GB will prevent it from crashing. For vid, Premiere Pro, having that expanded and faster storage space really gives a boost in loading media and editing.

When installing windows from fresh you should create two partitions. One for the system and another one for your important files and documents. In case you have any issue with the computer that would require a windows reinstall you will not lose anything important you have put aside on the data partition. When reinstalling you will only have to format the system partition and reinstall windows. All of your data on the second partition will remain safe.

The Samsung SSDs come with cloning software which works really well. You just need a USB - SSD adaptor and you can clone your disk image onto the new SSD so that when you turn it back on after the switch you can pick up where you left off on the new drive without wasting hours reinstalling all your software.

Beware that If you intend to use your Dell for Hackintosh, the Samsung 970 EVO plus (EVO+) SSD firmware is not supported by Mac OS, you have to use either the Samsung 970 EVO SSD or the Samsung 970 pro SSD.
Very good video that shows that normal people can upgrade their laptop and not only super(wo)man.

    Hello Sara, hello everybody,
    I have 3 questions:
    1. What are specifications for a compatible XPS 15 9570 RAM? (I understood that I canot simply buy any 32gb RAM, but specific ones)
    2. Why should I replace the WIFI card? Does the new card bring some "stamina"?
    3. All SSD of XPS 15 9570 are m.2 80X22? (I heard that there are "half of 80X22" format)
Thank you so much for your feedback.
    Alain

you can use an enclosure to migrate your os and files from the existing drive and save yourself from hassle and if your buying Samsung ssd then the Samsung magician software is bliss.. 🥰

Hi Sara, I ordered a Dell XPS 15 last week. I was on the fence about it, but your video won me over!
Could you do a video about which mouse you use for Windows? I love the Apple magic mouse (especially for the gesture controls for it in Adobe), but I'm not sure if anything is as great as that for creators specifically. Some suggestions would be helpful. Thank you!

You can also use Samsung Migration software and no need to re-install windos and software.

Disconnecting the battery is not required, but if you are going to, you might as well hold down the power button to dissipate any charge in the capacitors :)

Hi Sara, thank you for making this helpful video! I'm upgrading the WiFi card, is reformatting my system optional? I have the drivers for the Intel AC9260NGW.

I think the best upgrade is the WIFI Card... xD
BTW The face you made when you opened the PC is this typical look of people seeing cool tech for the first time... It is the first step into a big universe ^^

Disconnect the batter AND hold the power button down for at least 5 seconds to drain any power left in the components

Would it be easier to clone the existing NVMe to the new one (Macrium Reflect)? Or is it better to do a fresh install on the XPS?
