  • I made a DIY Road Case for my son's band "Mirthless". It's customized for his particular audio gear and he's already used it at a live show. Check out the band live at the end of the video!

    Not a big fan of that style of metal, but it's still cool to see someone seeking their dream of music, and it's amazing to see a father supporting their son as they progress on their music journey.

    • @SteveCarmichael

      It is a lot different than the 70s/80s rock and metal that I like. I am impressed by their musicianship and song structures, plus their recordings sound great for being diy. They are in the process of recording their 2nd CD now.

    • @josephsmith8087
      @josephsmith8087 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@SteveCarmichael I'm not dismissing their musicianship, but like you, it's just not much of my style of rock/metal.
      I'm personally one of those who likes 80s thrash, 90s grunge, and 00s alternative metal. Stuff like Metallica, nirvana, breaking benjamin, and chevelle.

    Ahhh the "masquerade"! I'm from Long Island but was in a handful of national touring bands and been through atl more then a few times lol. Masquerade was always a cool place to play. Ask your son if he's heard of a band called bayside. I'm not with them anymore but they are still playing. We weren't as heavy so he prolly never heard of them lol. I love music related builds. That's why I started my own custom drum company :)

    I understand the frustration with those darn tape measures Steve. Maybe Paul Akers (my Guru) over at FastCap can come up with a solution for that! Nice touch - giving your son and his band a little exposure here on TH-cam. Great project Steve, as always! It is fantastic to have your son involved in music! I know you play, and to pass it on is all a father can ask for. Does he create his own backing tracks or buy them and what are the backing tracks, bass or more? Thankz

    • @SteveCarmichael
      @SteveCarmichael  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Audio Tech Labs Thanks, he's a music major and composes and programs it all himself. They don't have a bass player so the guitarist records the bass track and addl rhythm guitar tracks. They add intros and percussion parts for extra flavor, like 808 bass drops.

    I'm in the process of creating a 40" x 22" x 30" (h) case for 2 PA speakers. I'm using 3/8" thick 5 ply plywood. Do you think I'd need a 2x4 frame on the bottom?

    • @SteveCarmichael
      @SteveCarmichael  ปีที่แล้ว

      I do think you would need some sort of frame to screw the plywood to. 2x2 or 1x3 would work as well and reduce cost. 3/8" plywood alone is not thick enough for screws to hold. They would tear out easily.

    Does it matter if you cut plywood with the grain or across the grain?? Which do you prefer?

    • @SteveCarmichael
      @SteveCarmichael  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The plies are glued together with alternating grain direction, so the strength is the same. The outer plies may tear out a little more across the grain depending on the blade. I usually pay attention to the grain direction of plywood just for cosmetics.

    • @crooker2
      @crooker2 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SteveCarmichael that's a good point. I recently built a road case and noticed the splintering on the outer layer when cutting with a jigsaw. The cuts were much cleaner going with the grain. But I guess, if you're cutting square/rectangular pieces, you will always be cutting at least 2 sides against the grain. ;)
      Thanks for hitting me back!

    • @SteveCarmichael
      @SteveCarmichael  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      A jigsaw blade with more teeth per inch would make a smoother cut.

      Thanks! I knew I couldn't get my dad's old tool chest back to a factory finish, so I just went with an approach that had a relic element to it. Huge VH fan here. I might be making a Frankenstein copy soon.

      They use a Line6 HD500 pedalboard and connect it to a laptop with a midi cable and control it via midi I believe. I can ask my son.

    I think shop gremlins are responsible for the tape measure problem. Shop gremlins are a real threat. I think measures should be taken.... ;)

    Cool case, nice work, but for the cost of labour and materials you could have just bought one that'd have shock mounts, mounting hardware and proper latches

    • @SteveCarmichael
      @SteveCarmichael  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      1994 Craftsman blade guards suck. I have it stored under the saw, but it should be in the trash bin. I installed a MicroJig MJ Splitter Steel Pro for ripping. I don't think they even had riving knives back then, at least not on the Craftsman contractor saw. btw, I think you might like one of these - amzn.to/2XMQFBm

    as a black metal and heavy metal fan the bands got talent but in my OPINION i feel there was too much use of the symbols and the lead singer audio could be amplified but besides that i feel that if they stay together they could have a major record dead in the future.

    • @SteveCarmichael
      @SteveCarmichael  7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I really enjoy watching them play. A lot different music than back in my day. I like hitting the cymbals a lot too, so he must get that from me. lol

    • @Youcifer
      @Youcifer 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Ryan rohr I'm the guitar player for the band in this video and a huge fan of black metal as well. In my defense, the cymbals were just picked up very loudly in the recording, which is normal in video recordings of live performances. Also, the volumes of vocals, guitars, and drums were all under the sound guy's control, not ours. Watching a video recording of our live set definitely doesn't accurately reflect how it sounds... That's not to say that Steve did a bad job capturing it; he did a great job. But yeah. Your critique isn't of our actual music. Just sayin'.
      Thanks so much for building this for us, Steve. It's super useful and convenient for us. Awesome vid, too.

      Is there even such a thing as a "major record deal" in 2017? And why would you want one? New acts don't need record labels to have a career if they can develop a big enough social media following. That said for every one act that "makes it" there are 100,000 who will never see the outside of bar gigs playing covers.

      That's ok. No one likes all music. I'm an 80's hair band guy, so I like rock with guitar gods and great singers.
