Great video! I would like to point out that the R5 does have an option to adjust the speed of eye autofocus tracking somewhere in the menu! I think you should mess around with that and then test AF when she's moving again to see if that betters the performance

Awesome video! Yes, I’ll get the EOSR5.
The RF lens is heavier due to larger lens. I guess if you try to hold one hand on the lens (instead of both hands on camera), it would be easier for a long photo shoot. I wonder why Canon has not released the RF35mm f1.4L(or 1.2L) yet

Love your videos and reviews!! To the point, not overly long and relevant. As for the weight of the R5 plus RF lens, perhaps a different holding technique would make it less front heavy, such as using the left hand to hold the lens instead of the camera body. Thanks for the great videos!!

I hadn't really entertained the thought of using EF lenses on the R5 but i think i actually prefer how they're not as clinically sharp but still look immense.
Great video! So glad you guys are putting out R5 content!
Would be super keen to see a 85mm comparison on the R5 with the RF 1.2, EF 1.2, and the upcoming RF 2.0.

    • @juliatrotti
      @juliatrotti  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Yeah that's so true. In some cases the RF lenses would be great for that extra quality - in other cases such as wedding photography, I don't know if my clients would want to see THAT much detail on their skin haha so having some EF lenses would be great for that too. Thank you and thanks for the suggestions too!

Very nice review! I just used the exact same setup last night for my first photo shoot with the camera (R5, RF 50, EF 35). Turned out really great! The eye AF is definitely impressive! One thing I would mention, is I got the over heat warning without even shooting any video. I shot around 700 photos in 1.5hrs. I would not have been able to do any 8K, 4K HQ, or slow motion video whatsoever at that point. Hopefully Canon has a fix for that because it seems a little ridiculous. It’s an impressive camera otherwise though!

Compare it to the a7iii and the A7rIv in lowlight. Also, could you offer suggestions for what iso you would never shoot above especially as a wedding photographer? I learned the hard lesson of never shooting silent in a wedding with some movement as banding becomes apparent very quickly especially in low light settings.

Julia, great review. It was very informative and the Canon results were impressive. Unfortunately, not good enough to make me switch to Canon. I have been contemplating my switch to mirrorless for about two years and Sony is what will work best for me and be most cost effective. Love your presets, they are amazing, just looks good with every type of image. When do you decide when you have the right cocktail of adjustments to create a preset? I'm trying to find my style but it's been so hard since every freaking picture is different, lighting, white balance, etc. When I think I have the right preset done, it looks great for one image, then it looks like crap for another and start from scratch again. I wonder if there's a technique for this, like a base start type preset. With your presets, everything looks great with one click hahah, very few times I'll have to make minor adjustments, I love this but I also want to have my own style, I guess this comes with practice. Anyways, I highly recommend Julia's presets for anyone reading this.

The purpose of such reviews is to give people an insight on to how it behaves on a specific form of use, that makes the whole R5 vs A7sIII discussion so ridiculous as they are two completely different platforms like comparing a drift to a drag car.

Great video Julia - thank you! As a wedding photographer I'd love to get your thoughts on R5 vs R6 for weddings. Always love your videos Julia, my question is how was the battery life just taking photos? I would love an r5 I was waiting for Canon to come up with something that could compete with Sony line. I always find myself dealing with low light situation so Sony happen to work out best at the time when i was upgrading. Its nice to see Canon's low light has improved. I know its not a good idea to have 2 different camera systems but I feel at some point I will be getting a Canon with a lens or 2 b/c I started with them and still have a spot for them lol. Thank again Julia for all that you do.

Thank you! I took about 2000 photos + around 20 min of video and went through 3 LPE6's on one of the days I was using the R5, it's kinda hard to tell though as those are my batteries from the 5D4s so they are pretty heavily used batteries already. And yeah I was super pleased with the low light capabilities!

Eye AF seems very sticky even with the EF lens. R5 looks like a good option for photo heavy hybrid shooter who has some EF glass they want to hang onto. R6 would probably be fine for most shooters who don't crop much. Would like to see a low light comparison between R5 and R6.

Thanks Julie, Your videos really do help. It has been so hot over here in Pennsylvania so Maddie and i took some time off. This coming week it is finally cooling off so back to some shoots. I do have so many questions and Im not sure if its appropriate to ask here but here goes.
    1. It seems like you prefer using the LCD screen but I get confused as I thought you thought i should use the view finder.. I find it hard to focus on the eyes thru the LCD screen.
    2. I want to use my 50mm 1.8 cuz you seen to really encourage that. My first shoot with it was horrible and some great poses totally out of focus.. I was doing AP on my 70-210 lense and at F4. When I changed lenses, I forgot to reset the camera so it probably confused the heck out of it... Last, I had the servo on and that probably really created its own set of problems.
    3. You seem to take a lot of pictrues RAW. I understand that becomes difficult when downloaded but this is where I get lost.
    4. I am going to try to take more stationary shots, not have her moving around like walking running toward me.. I am not sure I am ready for that or that she is.
    5. We are really wanting a Golden Hour shoot and want to start 90 min until Sunset. I cant wait for that.. Been watching your vids on GH.
    Thanks so much Julia

Thank you I'm glad you liked it! LCD vs EVF I would recommend to just use whatever feels more comfortable to you, there is no right or wrong. I just prefer using the LCD as my posture is better, I feel more open to talking to my client/subject rather than having a camera squished against my face haha and I only use the EVF when it's too bright and I can't see the screen properly. With the 50, taking portraits with a shallow depth of field can be tricky to nail the focus sometimes, I would recommend to try starting at a higher aperture instead like f4 if that's what you're used to and then slowly bringing it down as you notice you are nailing the focus more often.
I like to shoot in RAW as there is more information in the files and if there is blown out sky I can recover it in Lightroom or if accidentally don't expose something correctly I have the option to still save it in post :) Again if you find it easier to shoot and edit with JPG there is nothing wrong with that either - photography is supposed to be fun so just shoot in a way that makes you happy and makes your life easier in post too!
Yeah stationary shots are also a lot easier to get in focus than movement ones. You can always just try some movement shots towards the end of the shoot to see if you can get a good one or in between the stationary shots here and there.
That sounds amazing to shoot with golden hour!! I finally got a golden hour shoot at the beach I was waiting for for months just the other week, super excited to edit those pictures :D I hope I could help a little!

Julia, thank you so much for that lovely reply and your time. Your advice is very much appreciated. We may try another shoot next week as the weather is cooling a bit. We have some great rural area’s to work in. Maddie works at my home cleaning and decorating and has never formally modeled before but she is so photogenic and comfortable in front of a camera. Most of her posing was in front of an iPhone, lol. So she is learning posing from you! I should really fly her to Australia for you to fine tune. In some of your videos, you do as well as your models while on the other side of the camera! I try to talk Maddie into doing local commercial work but not sure she wants to. I’d love youth critique both my photography and her modeling some day! We are both open to constructive criticism! Ok, I’ve blabbered enough. You are really helping me and I thank you so much!
      Have a great weekend Julia!!!

Pretty much soon it won’t really matter what camera you use, all the mirrorless cameras will be more or less the same and it’ll be the person using it that produces the breathtaking shots

Great video as always. Curious, you started off mentioning the joystick for moving the focus point. You then used the Eye AF. Did you find that you had to manually move the focus point, or was the Eye AF good enough that the joystick wasn't necessary?

Thank you! For camera and lens reviews I like getting the camera to do all the work to see how well it performs, so for this shoot I didn't need to use it. But yeah normally I use eye AF and a focus point while shooting!

Patrick Keller You can customize the buttons on the R5, so you can go from single to servo, and switch to eye with 1 click. Look it up on you tube, that way if you’re shooting people and all of a sudden you want to shoot at a scene or subject, you’ll be able to switch very quickly and not miss a shot

I would add a battery grip to the R5 to balance the lens. I'm personally a fan of the ergonomic of the 5d. I don't like small camera so I guess a grip in this case make sense! One thing to keep in mind that I find really nice is the file size of the R5, in the c-raw, the files are 25MB. Which is really not that bad for the quality of images you get!

Hi Julia, Being experienced in both Sony a7R4 and EOS R5, could you please compare both in aspect of eye AF, dynamic range etc. In your video you are stating that being the robust size of RF lens, the EOS R5 becomes not to easy ergonomically. I always thought Sony bodies are ergonomically challenged. Is this going to be the same with 24-70/2.8 & 70-200/2.8 lenses for R5 (I believe these lenses are pretty much same size for both system; RF 70-200 might be shorter..)?
I'm ready to move into the mirrorless full frame from Nikon ecosystem that I had for a while. Since I made the decision to buy a new gear at first I bought the Nikon Z6 inorder to use my existing glasses with it. But I hated the autofocus system in the Z system. Since in this era with all these advances and known from the reviews I read about Sony's eye AF system, when I compared it to the Nikon Z6 that I had for short while and i figured out that in order to get my kids who are always in fast pace, I cannot rely on Nikon's eye auto focus feature and still needs to rely on its old dynamic AF like in DSLR time, which was not really acceptable in this era. So, I returned the camera and thought about moving to Sony a7Riv or Canon due to the arrival of R5.
I’m debating b/w a7r4 vs r5. The only thing I don’t like about the a7r4 is the lack of touch screen, articulated screen, top LCD, which you have mentioned in your video that you are depending on LCD/EVF and lack of multiple raw formats (believe r5 has different raw sizes to choose?), which are all in r5 with I believe almost close to Sony in eye tracking too. But glasses for r5 are ridiculously prized and as you said prime lenses are larger than sony. Being a7s3 announced with all these features. But sensor wise and dynamic range and future af advancement Sony might be the way to go as future proof.
I also read in a forum somewhere that even though the r5 has amazing eye tracking, the focus square that they built into the r5 is bigger than that in Sony, which I have noticed your video as well that the eye AF boxes are much smaller in your review of a7R4 compared to R5 video. So, there is more chance to focus eyelash over iris, whereas Sony’s is a smaller point/eye AF square that acquire more precisely the iris, did you happen to hear something in this line? Another key issue that I heard is that R5 struggles in face detection through obstacles, whereas Sony started using AI to avoid that problem. Sony has been the first that have worked on this by using AI to track an individual even when there are obstacles around.
So at present my thoughts are even if a7riv is lack of touch screen and all sort of good stuff, If it has a very good eye tracking/autofocus that are comparable to R5, I would invest in it and might be in 2022 or so when next camera comes into the market in a7R series, I’m pretty sure like in a7s3 all these goodies will be implemented in sony “R” line up. experience what z your thoughts?
All I’m trying to gather is some information in order to invest into an ecosystem with future proof, so that I don’t have to jump to another camera. Any thoughts on these decision making would be really helpful and really appreciate it. Your review and tips/ tricks about photography is valuable for photography community, thanks again.

@@juliatrotti in fact tired of these TH-cam reviewers crying over heat related issues , they don't even think it's primarily a still / hybrid camera ..video features are just a plus ....there are just a few actual R5 and R6 reviews of the photography capabilities .. 9 out of 10 reviews are related to its video capabilities ..bad marketing by Canon ...
