Thanks for watching. If you have any advice for photographers who are having trouble getting the best autofocus out of their EOS R5 feel free to leave your comments below. I encourage people sharing knowledge and ideas on this channel. Cheers.
Everything looks ok, but "Continues AF" is a "No, no". With that option, your camera will keep focusing, even when you don't need it and drain the battery. "Continues AF" is more video oriented.
You're right. It keeps focusing even when you're camera is not pointed at anything important and it does drain the battery. I'll update that in the description. I keep it on because I shoot video. Without that feature on you never know what the camera is looking at because the LCD/EVF is always defocused. Thank you for your comment.
It's more for self shooting like TH-cam content or shooting selfies for thumbnails. When I get in front of the camera I can't see my composition because the lens is not focused.
Thank u for the video is amazing and very helpful! I just buy now the R5 and I wanna ask you this, for the touch tracking that u show at the end, it works only for single shot right ? Not for Servo?
Thanks. This is a very helpful video. I’m wondering what happens if I have eye detection on for a bird in flight, but the bird is way out there. Will the lens not focus or will it just adjust to something like focusing on the head?
If you have human eye detection on the camera won't even see the bird. If you have bird eye detection on the camera will track the bird's eye but if the bird becomes too small in frame the camera will then put a box around the whole bird and track the body of the bird. Hope that helps.
This was awesome!! Thank you. I am constantly learning new things about this camera. At one point I got mad and turned off my face tracking. I want to use it again but everything I have tried (all your steps!) still has the eye detection box greyed out. The error message reads: Not available because of the associated function's setting. *AF method. I am truly stumped. Any other suggestions???
I just double checked and I don't see that function. I don't think Canon has that option yet. I believe you have to go into the menu and change the menu setting from people to animal. I've heard other people complaining about that so hopefully it's something that is fixed in firmware.
hi Vasko, awesome video, very in detail. / Do you think that the autofocus on a R8 is the same as in your R5 using a 85 mm 1.2 (which has a slow autofocus in the first place)? Is it usable?(example: following a person walking in the street). Thank you
Thanks for the comment glad you liked the video. I haven't tested the 85mm on the R8 so I can't speak on it. I would assume the R8 has the same or slightly better AF than the R5 since it is a newer camera. I can say the old EF 85mm f1.2 was a slow focusing lens. The new RF 85mm f1.2 is much faster. I thinks the RF 85mm would be able to handle tracking someone walking down the street with an R8. The old EF 85mm could probably do it too if the parson wasn't moving erratically. Hope that helps.
@@vaskoobscura_ Thank you for your answer. I did not expect a so detail one, and that says a lot about how you care about the topic and your community. So I have the old EF 85mm f1.2 (which have indeed a very (very) slow focus…). So if the R8 can handle a person walking, it’s enough for my need. Cheers
Hey bro.. I do photography of Australian Opals which are generally quite small in size. Camera keeps distorting certain parts of opal and focusing on one point. Help please
I am still so confused on the tap and track. Can you explain how to set that up? I understand eye tracking but the last part of video with boat is what I can't get my R6 to do:(
Yes of course you can. The EVF and LCD display the same info so you can see the box around the subject being tracked. When you have your eye to the EVF you can use the LCD as a touchpad to move around the focus point or double tap to lock on.
Absolutely this method works with back button focus. You just have to assign the button. Here is a video I made about how I setup my back button focus. th-cam.com/video/pxrLZEeDt_I/w-d-xo.html
Question, Vasco. I side tracked to your firmware update video. If there are more than one updates needed from where I am to most recent, is it necessary to update each, one at a time? Or, can one just go to the most recent?
Technically no. All you have to do is install the most current firmware and it will have all the previous firmware updates included. However with that being said I did run into a glitch last summer where I had to install an older firmware on an R5 in order to be able to install the newest firmware. I made a video about it to help out anybody who also runs into that glitch. th-cam.com/video/qu_ekTF9SVs/w-d-xo.html I would try to install the latest firmware first and if the camera won't recognize it then follow the advice in the video linked above. Hope that helps. Enjoy the new features in your camera.
I agree. I put an update on the video description. Continuous AF will drain your battery faster when shooting photo only. But for video or hybrid work I have to leave continuous AF on.
Thanks for the video, but suggesting that Canon add a button just to change the ‘subject to track’ setting is pretty dumb. If Canon added a button for every niche setting for those very few photographers that shoot ‘dog shows’, there’d be 50 buttons on the camera. Add the setting as a menu favorite and call it a day.
I bought the R5 after 5 years with Canon 5D MK IV, and I got tons of problems.. The AF method that works is horizon. The rest is not working. You press the AF button, and it's not focusing, and you get a red square. Recently, I pressed the AF button, and it's not immediately focusing. I got Sigma 60-600, and I updated the firmware to the latest. It's still the same. I'm only photographering Aviation, military vessels and moon & star. Do you know how to fix this? You may know a video that might fix it? It's driving me crazy! I spend tons!!! And there's no results! Thanks, Amazing channel!!
That's strange. Could be an issue with the lens talking to the camera. In terms of settings put the camera in AI Servo, set the tracking mode to airplanes, set your focus mode to tracking (That's the option all the way on the left) That should do the trick. You can also tap the screen to tell the camera what to track. If all that doesn't work I would research the compatibility of your lens with the camera. Hope that helps.
It would be helpful to include a warning for those with epilepsy due to the flashing. It's important to remember that these visuals may not enhance your appearance or aid in the learning process. Please consider the impact on others before incorporating excessive flashing effects.
I will for sure. I just did my first photoshoot with the R5 Mark II yesterday and learned a lot but I still need to play with the camera a bit more to figure out all the settings.
I only get a green tracking box when I am in C1, C2, or C3. I've been going through my settings but can't seem to figure out what the difference is. I'll have to go dig deeper on that. Thanks for the comment.
Hey, great video but I find it very annoying and irritating that your video keeps doing this random glitchy throughout the video, it's pretty distracting and messes with my eyes. Example at 5:30
Thanks for the comment. I made that video a while ago. I've tuned down that glitch effect a lot since then. I guess it was new and exciting at the time. lol. Thanks for the comment.

@@vaskoobscura_ Haven't had problems shooting video with Continues AF Disabled? Is that more for fast moving objects like birds in flight?
It's more for self shooting like TH-cam content or shooting selfies for thumbnails. When I get in front of the camera I can't see my composition because the lens is not focused.
It’s good for video shoot ya?

Any informative vid - thank you - which CAGE is on your R5?
Thanks appreciated. Welcome to the channel. It's the original SmallRig cage for the R5. It's been discontinued they made a newer version of the cage.
you can custom set the star button on back to change from people to animal eye detection.

Also use an eraser on a pensil, keeping the above so the things fall on the floor not into the lens.

@@vaskoobscura_r5m2 is wayyyyyy jumpier than the m1. It’s crazy frustrating out of the box!
Try it on a flying bird. Its really hard to get the eye of the bird. Continuous AF will grab the background of anything the bird is flying by.
Have you tried the tap to track feature? Double tap the back of the screen and the R5 will track whatever it is that you tapped on.
What’s the thing around your camera?
That’s a camera cage. It’s for shooting video. I can attach a monitor and lights to the camera to build a video rig.
